Dear Honorable Members of the City Council,
Hawaiian Elementary School is committed to providing a comprehensive and enriching educational experience for all students in grades Transitional Kindergarten through sixth grade. We believe that early exposure to college, career pathways, and real-world learning opportunities plays a critical role in shaping students’ aspirations, broadening their perspectives, and supporting long-term academic success. To support this vision, we respectfully request a $5,000 donation from the City of Hawaiian Gardens to fund college- and career-readiness focused field trips for our students.

These field trips will extend learning beyond the classroom by providing students with meaningful opportunities to explore higher education institutions, museums, galleries, and career-centered learning spaces. Visits to colleges and universities will help students begin to see themselves as future college-goers, while trips to museums and galleries will connect learning to cultural, artistic, and historical contexts. Additionally, career exploration experiences will introduce students to careers of the future, helping them understand how their learning today connects to opportunities tomorrow.

For many of our students, these experiences represent their first exposure to college campuses, professional environments, and career pathways beyond their immediate community. Early and intentional exposure is especially impactful, as it helps students develop goals, build motivation, and envision a wide range of possibilities for their future. These field trips will reinforce our schoolwide focus on college and career readiness while supporting equity by ensuring all students have access to these opportunities, regardless of financial circumstances.

The requested funds will be used to offset costs associated with these educational experiences, including:
● Transportation to and from colleges, museums, galleries, and career-focused sites ● Entrance fees and program costs to ensure full student participation We believe this investment will have lasting benefits for our students and the broader community. By expanding students’ horizons and fostering early awareness of college and career pathways, we are helping to cultivate confident, curious, and future-ready learners.

Thank you for your continued support of Hawaiian Elementary School and the students we serve.

In Community,
Maria Perez-Brena
