SUBJECT:
Construction of Speed Humps on Broadway from Inglewood Ave to Grevillea Ave, Eucalyptus Ave from Broadway to El Segundo Blvd and 119th St from Atkinson Ave to Van Ness Ave RECOMMENDED MOTION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve installation of speed humps on Broadway from Inglewood Ave to Grevillea Ave, Eucalyptus Ave from Broadway to El Segundo Blvd and 119th St from Atkinson Ave to Van Ness Ave
DISCUSSION:
Per the direction of City Council, Staff has prepared an agenda bill to install speed humps on Broadway from Inglewood Ave to Grevillea Ave, Eucalyptus Ave from Broadway to El Segundo Blvd and 119th St from Atkinson Ave to Van Ness Ave.
Six speed humps will be installed on Broadway from Inglewood Ave to Grevillea Ave. This portion of Broadway is near three schools: Hawthorne Math & Science Academy, Eucalyptus Elementary School and Hawthorne High School. This area has a high volume of students walking to and from each of these schools. With the recent conversion of 126th Street from Hawthorne Blvd to Grevillea Ave to a one-way westbound street, traffic is being diverted onto Broadway.
Two speed humps will be installed on Eucalyptus Ave from Broadway to El Segundo Blvd. The traffic volume for this area is 700 vehicles. This portion of Eucalyptus Ave is one block away from Hawthorne High School and south of Eucalyptus Elementary School, which have a high volume of students.
Seven speed humps will be installed on 119th St from Atkinson Ave to Van Ness Ave. Cimarron Elementary School is in the vicinity of 119th St. The traffic volume for this area is 648 vehicles.
Additionally, the traffic data demonstrates that motorists are using 119th St to Crenshaw Blvd to access the I-105 freeway.
Speed hump installation is recommended for all of these locations to reduce speed and collisions and increase safety.
The work will consist of cold-planing, asphalt paving, construction of speed humps, pavement markings, and installation of warning signs.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN:
The installation of these speed humps will enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors when traveling on City streets.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None. Funds for the construction and installation of a total of 15 speed humps in the amount of $45,000 are available in the adopted Fiscal Year 2023-2024 budget and will be paid for with approved and allocated Gas Tax Funds.
NOTICING PROCEDURES:
