AGENDA BILL
For the meeting of May 28, 2024
Originating Department: Police Department
City Manager: ____________________ Chief of Police: ____________________ Vontray Norris Gary Tomatani
SUBJECT:
The Transfer of $301,424.82 in Unclaimed Money Pursuant to Government Code Section 50050.
RECOMMENDED MOTION:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the adoption of $301,424.82 in unclaimed currency, to be deposited into the City’s general fund, and approve an appropriation of this adopted currency to the Police Department’s Machinery & Equipment budget in the amount of $56,287.00, Contract Services budget in the amount of $67,600.00, and the Operating Supplies budget in the amount of $177,537.82.
DISCUSSION:
Government Code Section 50050 provides that unclaimed funds, which have been under the official custody of local agency for three years, will become the property of the agency. The notice publication requirement of two publications for two consecutive weeks has been met as they were published on March 19th and 26th. Additionally, funds that are unclaimed for 45 days following a notice, may be transferred to the general fund. Here, the funds became available for transfer to the general fund on or after May 2, 2024.
The Hawthorne Police Department seeks approval to allocate and utilize the aforementioned funds for critical infrastructure acquisitions, essential for Real Time Information Center (RTIC) buildout, including Drone as the first Responder (DFR) unit. This includes advanced workstations, security features, access controls, upgraded servers, cabinets, contract services, and other necessary items to support the RTIC/DFR initiatives effectively.
