City Council

AGENDA BILL
For the meeting of July 9, 2024
Originating Department: Community Services
City Manager:

Vontray Norris
Community Services Manager:

SUBJECT:

Parks and Recreation Month “July”
RECOMMENDED MOTION:

Staff Recommends that the City Council receive and file DISCUSSION:

Recreation Month is an Annual Celebration that takes place in July. It aims to promote the importance of leisure and recreational activities in people's lives. The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) first introduced the concept of Recreation Month in the United States in 1985 and has since been observed globally. The City of Hawthorne will celebrate Recreation Month by organizing various events and activities to promote the benefits of recreation and encourage citizens to engage in leisure activities.

The staff report explains that Recreation Month's main purpose is to encourage people to take a break from their daily routines, engage in leisure activities, and rejuvenate physically and mentally. This initiative is meant to remind individuals of the significance of recreation in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, boosting mental well-being, and fostering social connections.

The City of Hawthorne will further highlight the benefits of recreation, including improved physical health, enhanced creativity, and increased stress relief. We will also emphasize the role of parks and recreation departments in providing accessible and affordable recreational opportunities for communities, such as sports facilities, playgrounds, senior activities, and cultural events.

Moreover, the staff report stresses the importance of community involvement in Recreation Month, encouraging local governments, businesses, and individuals to participate in and support recreational activities. This can be done through organizing events, volunteering, or simply taking part in leisure activities with friends and family.

In conclusion, the Community Services Department underscores the value of Recreation Month as a reminder of the importance of leisure and recreation in our lives. By promoting a healthy work-life balance, fostering social connections, and improving overall well-being, Recreation Month contributes to a happier, healthier, and more vibrant community.
