Subject: I STRONGLY SUPPORT AGENDA ITEM #16
Hello City Councilmembers -
Today, I am writing to you to voice my strong support for agenda item #16, which, if approved, would retain a consultant to develop Huntington Beach's first Sustainability Master Plan.

Embracing sustainability is essential to the very survival of our community. Without a sustainable community-wide approach to our use of land, energy, local transit, and water, our thoughtlessness will deprive future generations of this place we now call home.

While there is often talk at these meetings about preserving what Huntington Beach was, we need to dispense with the nostalgia and focus on our future. As the consultant's proposal correctly states: Huntington Beach is at a crossroads. Our actions now will have a dramatic impact on the future quality of life in Huntington Beach.

Although sustainability has been wrongly demonized and dismissed by some, including a current member of this council who brazenly attempted to have the word "sustainability" removed in its entirety from our 2017 General Plan update, it seems rather obvious that our priorities must lie with meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is the very definition of sustainability, and it should be the goal of everyone who truly values our city.

I urge our community to embrace sustainability both as a way of working toward a higher quality of life now and with a view toward passing it forward to our children and grandchildren. We owe them the same opportunities to enjoy the wonders of Huntington Beach.

Please support sustainability in Huntington Beach. Please vote YES on Agenda Item #16! Thank you.

Sincerely,
Steve Shepherd

Subject: Support HB Renewable Energy Sustainability Master Plan Dear City Council Members,
Thank you for your leadership on Clean Renewable Energy for OC! I am writing to urge you to support the Renewable Energy Sustainability Master Plan for Huntington Beach.

As a high schooler and a youth climate activist, I am incredibly grateful that you chose to offer 100% renewable energy for businesses and residents. Even with your commitment to the OCPA, we still need to do more work holding large corporations accountable in order to save lives and create clean air for all. This, in no way, is an "overreach".

We all support this increase in equity, prevention of further pollution, and the examination at how each and every Huntington Beach resident has been affected by the climate crisis. Let's take steps to create a cleaner world for us and for our future generations. Thank you!

Subject: Item 16
First issue: Is sustainability meaningful? This week the UN-IPCC report, crafted by specialists who have studied the growing climate threat for decades, again emphatically said yes; pursuing sustainability is actually critical to our survival.

But for those who doubt the science that brought us moon landings, vaccinations, cell phones, video streaming, CAT and MRI scans, diabetes control, robotic surgery for prostate cancer and so on, there are other authorities to rely on. To find what big capitalist-centered organizations think and are doing, read the annual reports of The American Petroleum Institute, Cargill, Blackrock, The American Chamber of Commerce, Shell, British Petroleum, and so on.

Second issue: how does Huntington Beach achieve sustainability? That question is deeply complex. There is no one-size- fits-all formula. In a vibrant city like Huntington Beach, the stakeholders range from well leaseholders to the installers of home rooftop solar. Like the biggest businesses and largest employers in the world, Huntington Beach will need to study the details and analyze the results.

Vote yes on Item 16 so the City can make informed decisions about climate change.
