Subject: City Council Meeting 6/7/22 Comments
The following is for Public Comments for the City Council Meeting scheduled 6/7/22 Agneda Item 14: (22-486) Rodgers site naming to 17th Street Park Huntington Beach City Council:
I would like to support the compromise as proposed on the naming of the former Rodgers Senior Center Site to use the historic name of "17" Street Park" and recognize Michael E Rodgers by naming the building on the property after him.
I just want to emphasize that the building on the property was approved as a community building that can also serve as the American Legion Post. The building was not approved as a Veteran Hall or solely as the Legion Post. Naming of the building after the Legion or Veterans would convey that it is only to be used by those organizations. The building was approved as a community facility that can be utilized by all of Huntington Beach.
I would also support naming some part of the new senior center after Michael E Rodgers. His support of Seniors is his legacy. With the City Council approval tonight to the proposed naming will be the final approval needed to complete the journey from the old Senior Center to parkland! Looking forward to the park opening! Agenda Item 12: )22-485) Historic Resource Board
I would like to support the appointment of Catherine Johnson to the Huntington Beach Historical Resources Board (HRB). Catherine was instrumental in the support and research on the history of 17 Street Park through the years. She would be an asset to the HRB

City of Huntington Beach - City Council
Regarding: Agenda Item #14 - Renaming of the Parkland and Amenities Located at 1706 Orange Avenue - Former Rodgers' Senior Center
Dear Mayor Delgleize and City Council,
park is one of the 3 original city parks in Huntington Beach, and it is fitting to honor the history and legacy of public open space in our city by retaining the original name.
Over the years, some city officials have tried to sell this park, and some have co-opted the site for non-park purposes. Some have said that the park restoration project that is currently underway is creating a "new" city park. But this is not a new park, it is a long overdue restoration. The project is moving forward because the people of Huntington Beach have fought to keep this park in the public domain, fought to keep out private development from public lands, and fought to restore the site to its original purpose of public open space.
To select the original name of this park, 17th Street Park, will honor the history, the original intent of the legacy gift, and especially the people of Huntington Beach who fought for and won the restoration of this park site with the unanimous support and vote of this Council.
I want to thank the Council, the Community Services Commission, the HB Community and Library Services Department, and Chris Slam who have all done the hard work to advocate for restoration of this wonderful City asset, and to engage the public in a meaningful way throughout this long process.
Respectfully and with Best Regards,
Frances A. Varga
