Dear Council Members,
As a homeowner here in Huntington Beach, and proud parent on an LBBTQ child, I heartily disagree with the movement to stop flying the PRIDE flag in June, Pride month which is recognized at the national level. This is not an issue of your personal politics, this is an issue of our own children and neighbors seeing a physical representation of their acceptance in their own town.

Hello City Council members,
I would like to voice my concern about some intentions to possibly remove the Pride flag from flying in June. I highly recommend continuing to fly that flag.

The population of those hitting growing age right now is composed of more than 20% of individuals who identify somewhere within the LGBTQ+ spectrum. These groups have historically been and still are treated differently in many settings and they have lacked representation in so many forums in our city and in our country.

They deserve to feel like they are welcomed to the table now and yes, that does require showing, visibly, that you are okay with them. It requires the flag. It will not forever, we can all hope. But for now, equity is about catching all people up to those who have soared before. It is the right thing to do.

Thank you for reading,
Claire

PRIDE Flag
Hello HB City Council,
1 am reaching out to let you know that I strongly disagree with your movement to stop flying the PRIDE flag in June. My husband and I moved to Huntington Beach to raise our family in a family oriented community that respects and supports everyone. The LGBTQ+ community is a part of Huntington Beach as it is everywhere. The PRIDE flag is a symbol of unity and peace and support. In this time of rising mental health crisis in our country, it is our duty as citizens to do the best we can to show our support and inclusion to everyone within our community. I hope that my son (4 months old) is proud to live in a community that shows respect and support for everyone in our community, particularly marginalized groups.

I ask that you keep flying the PRIDE flag in June to show that the city of Huntington Beach is a safe place of acceptance and inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community.

Sincerely,
CaittinSemko

Subject: Don't politicize compassion
Dear Council Members,
I disagree with the movement to stop flying the PRIDE flag in Huntington Beach. The LGBTQ+ community is part ofHuntington Beach and the PRIDE flag is a symbol of unity and acceptance. Removing it shows you care about votes and stoking hate more than compassion, your constitutes and neighbors. I ask that you keep flying the PRIDE flag, to show that Huntington Beach is an accepting, inclusive and safe city for their LGBTQ+ residents and all of those who visit here.

Nowhere in the US constitution, religious text of any of the mainstream faiths or city doctrines does it say that hiding, hating and judging a group for their gender identity or attraction is an acceptable activity. Do not give in to hate in their names.

If the flag is taken down it is a clear sign to me that my friends, family and myself are not safe or welcome in the city and we will, without delay, avoid visiting, shopping or even driving through.

Sincerely,
Lynn Johnson

Thank you for reading,
Claire
hetero, cisgender, white, professional, able-bodied voting person (similar to the city council members?) living in your city.

Subject: LGBTQ Flag
To all LGBTQ+ Community Members and their Allies... please help and please spread the word to all LGBTQ+ folks and Allies you know- you don't need to live in HB to help:

Recently Huntington Beach elected 4 new City Council Members who are erasing work that has been done to make the city more inclusive and welcoming.

They had already stopped Zooming City Meetings, cutting off "real time access" to those who are unable to attend the meetings in person (disabled veterans, parents with small children, working adults who are unable to attend in person, etc.). They have placed on their agenda for the upcoming meeting February 7th, a move to end flying the PRIDE Flag during June.

I understand that some people might not understand the value and importance of flying that flag, and I would like to quickly explain. HB City Council is moving to continue to fly the POW/MIA flag, as they should. And why should they continue to fly that flag? Because, like the PRIDE flag, POW/MIA service members represent all Americans. They represent Americans of all races, all cultures, all religions, all economic backgrounds, just as the PRIDE flag does. There are LGBTQ+ Americans in every race, every gender, every culture, every religion, and every economic background. Both the POW/MIA and PRIDE Flag are unifying flags that are flown to represent these groups, and that they are seen and are represented in our city. They are one of only a handful of flags that are meant to unify (the disability awareness flag is another example of a flag that could be flown to represent unity as well). And I ask, isn't now a time to unify rather than divide?

There's need to inform the public why the city staff can't accomplish these tasking's . What make these specialized experts so uniquely qualified. Why are these recurring needs competitively sourced. What is the economic consequences of these proposed contracts?

Subject: Pride Flag
Dear Council Members,
I disagree with the movement to stop flying the PRIDE flag in June. The LGBTQ+ community is part of every community, including Huntington Beach and the PRIDE flag is a symbol of unity and acceptance. I ask that you keep flying the PRIDE flag, to show that Huntington Beach is an accepting, inclusive and safe city forlheir LGBTQ+ residents and all of those who visit here. To do otherwise i feeding into the American culture wars and we do not want our great city to be drawn into that.

Sincerely,
Marta and Barton Shively

Subject: PRIDE Flag Agenda Item
Dear Council Members,
I have been a resident of Huntington Beach for over 30 years. I also recently retired after being an educator in Orange County for 40 years. I understand the importance of creating a community and climate where all people feel accepted and are able to thrive. I adamantly disagree with the movement of some of the HB Council to stop flying the PRIDE flag during the month of June. The LGBTQ+ community is a part of every community, including Huntington Beach. The PRIDE flag is a symbol of the unity and acceptance that as I have shared, is important to all its members. I ask that you keep flying the PRIDE flag to show that Huntington Beach, the city that I have chosen to live and raise my family, is an inclusive and safe city for their LGBTQ+ residents and all who choose to visit us here.

Sincerely,
Marguerite Long

Subject: Support for flying Pride flag in HB
Dear Council Members,
It's very disappointing for me to find out this morning that HB council is even considering stopping Pride flags as a symbolic gesture to silence LGBTQ+ community. Needlessly to say, I disagree with this movement. The LGBTQ+ community is part of every community, including Huntington Beach and the PRIDE flag is a symbol of unity and acceptance. I ask that you keep flying the PRIDE flag, to show that Huntington Beach is an accepting, inclusive and safe city for their LGBTQ+ residents and all of those who visit here. CFTY COUNCIL
Estanislau, Robin
Agenda Item 23-109
Honorable Councilmembers,
I am writing in response to agenda item 23-109, regarding the flying of flags at City Hall.

I was honored to serve on the Huntington Beach City Council from 2010 -2014 and I was Mayor Pro-Tem in 2014.

I believe I was the only openly gay City Councilmember to serve on the Huntington Beach City Council in recent memory.

It gave me a great deal of pride to represent all the people of Huntington Beach, including its LGBTQ residents. 1 am also proud that when I served on the City Council, the city of Huntington Beach participated in the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index. This index rates cities based on 47 criteria including nondiscrimination laws, relationship recognition, employment and contracting policies, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement, and city leadership.

I'm proud to say that in 2014, Huntington Beach achieved a score of 76, the highest score of any city in Orange County.

That's a step forward.

The Huntington Beach City Council also took a step forward in 2021, when it adopted a simple four-page flag policy that allowed councilmembers to vote to fiy flags representing community residents' diversity. It was so inspiring and uplifting for me to see the LGBTQ Equality Flag flying at City Hall for Pride Month in 2021 and 2022. Although I don't live in Huntington Beach any longer, I frequently visit and I'm proud when 1 see progress being made.

Doing away with the simple four page policy is a step backward for the city. The country right now is having a huge backlash against civil rights, not just against LGBTQ people, but against Asians, Blacks, Women, Latinos, Jewish people, and immigrants.

This is the wrong time for Huntington Beach to send a message that the City doesn't support its LGBTQ residents. I urge you to defeat this proposalandtocelebratethediversityofthe Huntington Beach community. Reject this effort to take Huntington Beach backwards.

Subject: Remote access
Good morning,
I am requesting that you reinstate remote access to the city council meetings I suffer from Meniere's disease and at night my balance is quite often impaired as is my night vision.

While I realize this technology was used in response to the COVID pandemic, it is now a way of life for me. I'm able to do ESL tutoring, attend many different meetings and even see family and friends who live far away
Why silence many people who want +o share in our local government? I would think you d want +o hear from ALL of your cons+i+uen+s.

Please consider those of us who cannot drive at night.

Subject: Remote access to city meetings
Good morning,
I sincerely hope that the members of the city council will reinstate remote access for public comments. in September/ when 1 had my total knee replacement surgery and subsequent recovery/1 counted on the fact that if there was was agenda item important to me, I could not only email the city council, but I could call in to make public comments, I learned first hand how important that access was to anyone with a disability that would prevent them from in person comments.

I recognize that initially the use of technology was a response to a world wide pandemic. Like many I had to learn how to use it. I am glad that I did. Sincethistypeof technology allows for more of the public to engage with the city council, why effectively silence the public now?
I understand the desire to "shorten" the city council meetings, but shouldn't hearing from your constituents override that desire?

Subject: Agenda Item 30 Supplemental comment
I am writing in support of Agenda Item 30. As Council Member Burns correctly notes, it is inappropriatetoflyanyflagof a partisan or divisive nature on City property. Limiting flags to be flown as he recommends is obviously the correct policy.

Beyond that, we cannot avoid noticing that the only other flag people are clamoring for is the so-called Pride flag. This particular flag celebrates diverse forms of sexual practices that deviate from the conventional, Bible-based morality. Flying it is an attack on that morality.

The sanctity of the sexual union of one man and one woman in marriage is essential to the stability of the family, and the family is the fundamental unit of social order. Protecting the family as an institution is therefore a legitimate function of government, white attacking the sexual morality underlying family stability is the opposite of a legitimate government function. No amount of confusion spread by a flood of undefined buzz words like "diversity" or "inclusion" can change that fact.
