To Whom it May Concern,
I lived & worked in HB for years. I worked with the crew who first opened Dukes, began a Senior Pilates program for the city and have been proud to shop & eat in your city. I support inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ Community. Voting to pass an ordinance that would ban the flying of the PRIDE Flag shows that Huntington Beach is not an accepting, inclusive and safe city for the LGBTQ+ community. Knowing that a vote went in favor of prejudice makes me want to spend my money elsewhere. When I make the decision where I will go to spend the day at the beach, where I will go to shop, where I will go to vacation, I look for cities that value equality, such as Long Beach, Costa Mesa and Laguna Niguel. Those cities are just as easy for me to go to, AND they show that they value the LGBTQ+ members of their city, unlike Huntington Beach, by flying the PRIDE flag in June.
Please consider views like mine in moving forward. I'd like to tell others that HB is inclusive and open minded, but fear I will need to spread the word & ask others not to spend their money in HB either.
Sincerely,
Chelsie Carr

Hello, Agenda Item No.: 23(23•145)
I am a resident of Huntington Beach since the day I was born. 47 years I have been a resident and citizen in Huntington Beach. I was so proud the day our City Council voted to fly the Pride Flag during Pride Month, and so disappointed and sad the day you chose not to.
I am a wife, mother of 3, volunteer, and I work in a local school district. You were elected to represent the people of Huntington Beach... your vote and Removal of the flag represent nothing about me or my family.
It is a scary world for the LGBTQIA+ Community, one of my children included. Flying the PRIDE Flag lets the LGBTQIA+ Community know they are welcome here. Removing it is a clear sign that they are not. Which side of history do you want to be on? The inclusive, accepting side, or the side that brings us back decades to unequal rights? What's next? Where does this backslide end? I understand that some people might not understand the value and importance of flying that flag, and I would like to quickly explain. HB City Council is moving to continue to fly the POW/MIA flag, as they should. And why should they continue to fly that flag? Because, like the PRIDE flag, POW/MIA service members represent all Americans. They represent Americans of all races, all cultures, all religions, all economic backgrounds, just as the PRIDE flag does. There are LGBTQ+ Americans in every race, every gender, every culture, every religion, and every economic background. Both the POW/MIA and PRIDE Flag are unifying flags that are flown to represent these groups, and that they are seen and are represented in our city. They are one of only a handful of flags that are meant to unify (the disability awareness flag is another example of a flag that could be flown to represent unity as well). And I ask, isn't now a time to unify rather than divide? The Federal Government supports flying the PRIDE flag: https://www.gsa.gov/blog/2022/06/15/gsa-helps-™ raise-pride-flag-at-federal-buildings
1 As a resident and community member of Huntington Beach, I ask that you reconsider this decision and vote to continue to fly the Pride Flag just as the unanimous decision just 2 short years ago.
Thank you,
Melissa Desjardin

Dear Council Members,
As a resident of Huntington Beach, I am disappointed in your initial vote to suspend flying the PRIDE flag during the month of June. and voted in support of the ordinance proposed by Council Member Burns. The flag is a symbol of unity and acceptance and serves to show residents and visitors that Huntington Beach is an accepting, inclusive and safe city for everyone. I think this is especially important for the youth in our community. Research shows the significant positive impact acceptance has on mental well-being. This should not be a political issue. It is a very simple way to make people in our community feel seen and accepted.
Please reconsider and vote to fly the PRIDE flag during the month of June.

Subject: Flag Flying Ordinance
Dear Council Members,
As residents of Huntington Beach for almost thirty years, you did not represent our voices when you voted to suspend flying the PRIDE Flag and voted in support of the ordinance proposed by Council Member Burns. You were elected to a non-partisan position where you are to represent your constituents' voices. The overwhelming majority of emails received by the City Council (almost 85%) voiced support for the LGBTQ+ community and want the flag to fly during the month of June. In addition, almost 90% of those that spoke at the City Council meeting on February 7th were opposed to the new ordinance proposed by Council Member Burns and in favor of flying the PRIDE Flag. We ask that at the next City Council meeting you vote to keep flying the PRIDE flag as a symbol of unity and acceptance. Vote to show that Huntington Beach is an inclusive and safe city for their LGBTQ+ residents, family, and friends and all those who visit and work here.
It was also stated that the new flag flying ordinance proposed by Council Member Burns is an attempt to:
1) "Simplify government" - PLEASE remember that as elected officials, you should never try to simplify and make your job easier at the expense of doing what is right for your constituents, for your City, for your Nation, for the World.
2) "All are represented equally under the flag of the United Stated of America" -- this is simply NOT TRUE. There are millions of Americans every day fighting for their basic human rights and freedoms, like access to healthcare, housing, employment, etc. They face continued harassment and discrimination as well. Therefore, the United States Flag DOES NOT represent all Americans equally.
Please remember that many of these marginalized and oppressed Americans live, work, and visit Huntington Beach. So, opportunities to fly "specialty" flags like the PRIDE flag are critical for inclusion, representation, equity, celebration, and acceptance.
Sincerely,
Andrew and Lisa Williams

Flying the PRIDE Flag is such a simple way to support inclusivity. I am so disappointed with the City Council of Huntington Beach, that you would take an action that makes people I know and love feel unsafe and unwelcome in your city.

As a resident of Huntington Beach, you did not represent my voice when you voted to suspend flying the PRIDE Flag and voted in support of the ordinance proposed by Council Member Burns. You were elected to a non-partisan position where you are to represent your constituents' voices. As seen by the emails before, the majority of Huntington Beach residents support the LGBTQ+ community and want the flag to fly during the month of June. I ask that at the next City Council meeting you vote to keep flying the PRIDE flag as a symbol of unity and acceptance. Vote to show that Huntington Beach is an accepting, inclusive and safe city for their LGBTQ+ Residents and all those who visit here.

Subject: Keep flying the Pride flag!
Dear Council Members,
I am a resident of Huntington Beach, and I write in opposition to the ordinance proposed by Council Member Burns that would turn back the clock on our city's warm welcome of all. Flying the PRIDE flag communicates positively that the LGBTQ+ community and their loved ones are safe here, wanted here, and are valuable members of our community. To remove the flag, even under the false guise of "equality" is an exclusionary, regressive move that shows more allegiance to far-right politics than faithful representation of the people of Huntington Beach.
When Huntington Beach makes the news for "culture war" issues, we all lose. Once again, our city is making headlines as being bigoted, uneducated and unfriendly, not because of the good citizens of the city, but because the national, political climate has been put ahead of the real lives of actual people.
I hope the council members take time to think about what it says if Huntington Beach reverses our welcome, pulling down a flag that conveys hope and safety to so many. What message do we send if our welcome is conditional and our hospitality is unpredictable? Many of us are proud of Huntington Beach as a good place to raise a family, and many (if not all) of our families include loved ones in the LGBTQ+ community. Let's keep being a city for families instead of a city for politics.

Dear City Council Members,
I am an Orange County homeowner and my boyfriend and I spend most weekends in Huntington Beach. We eat at Avila's, Duke's, or Sandy's. He gets drinks at Provisions, we buy emergency beach clothes across from the pier, and so on. I am a Legacy Longboard runner of the Surf City Half Marathon and have been running it since 2012.
Because I feel so much a part of the community, I am absolutely astounded that it's even being discussed to pass an ordinance banning the flying of the Pride Flag. I am a strong ally of the LGBTQ community, for one thing, and for another thing, it's 2023, not 1953. This is an astonishing step backwards and an absolute slap in the face to anyone who values inclusivity and free speech. It makes the city look ridiculous.
It will also hurt business. There are plenty of nearby communities that people can choose to go to and spend their money that do not impose discriminatory rules on flags and understand that society has moved on and is accepting of all types of people. Please, Huntington Beach, check your calendars and stop this nonsense.
Sincerely,
Bailey Smith

Council Members,
I love where I live - the city, the home I share with my wife.
But for as much as I love living in this city, there is no denying that this history of this city is not one filled with inclusivity and/or diversity.
I've seen comedians perform within this city constantly joke about its history. It's a running joke...
Not long ago, in sharing with co-workers the cities we all in live in, I had mentioned I lived in Huntington Beach. One co- worker shared a quick disdain for the city - "Nope, I hate city. I try to stay away from HB." This co-worker... is a non-white male.
While neighboring cities continue to chose and welcome the celebration of diverse cultures and promote inclusivity, this city wants to do nothing. And I know, it may sound dumb, you may question 'why is this a big deal? Yeah, it may mean nothing to you, but one flag, one small act of just allowing it to display for 30 days, goes a long way to yet another community that continues to experience hate and acts of violence against.
But as I began, I love this city. It saddens me to continuously see the hate and violence against my community across this country. In my own state, the county I was born and raised in, it saddens me that there's no effort in celebrating the cultures and diversity in the city I live in. It also saddens me that there is still such a huge negative perception of what this city really is and could be.
HB Council Members - I am ultimately, I am a 5'5, female, openly gay, American, Hispanic, homeowning, taxpayer in this city. You ultimately decide what's best, but this move, although small, continues to tarnish this city's name and what it could stand for. HB, you ultimately decide what your 'brand' should be.
I also want to be clear; I have nothing but respect for our military men and women. I have had family members serve for our country. They have fought for our continuous freedom. Ours. Every person in this city.
These conversations are exhausting, and honestly, I'm not even confident that this email/statement will change any of your minds. But 30 days. All we are looking for is 30 days of acceptance from the city we live in.
Thank you for your time.
Sabrina

I am saddened to hear about the vote to ban flying the LGBTQ+ Pride flag and wanted to write to you in support of continuing to allow the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag to fly in Huntington Beach. There is a wealth of research and evidence to show that when LGBTQ+ folks experience support from their governing bodies and systems, how they are benefited psychologically and emotionally, less likely to commit suicide, and lead healthier and happier lives. I hope that the council can see how vital it is to all citizens of Huntington Beach to continue to fly the LGBTQ+ Pride flag.

Dear Council Members,
Agenda Hem No.: # 23 (23-105
By now you must know there has been a 83% surge in hate crimes against LGBT in Orange Countv. What is the council going to do about this? Banning a flag sends a terrible signal. Instead of pandering to religious bigots and losing revenue HB derives from events from surfing to possibly even the Olympics, please let's not perpetuate these culture wars which literally can cause harm. Other cities manage to fly flags without incident. Why is HB any different? (See stats in this article: https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/orange-county-saw-surge-asian-lgbtq-hate-crimes- 2021/)
Also, no one is buying this is "just about a flag." As a way of background let's look at national and international events.
Currently on the national level, we see a right-wing Christo-Fascist takeover of our government in slow motion....it's been happening for a while but January 6th made it all obvious how serious they are at attempting a takeover. Anti-gay, anti-abortion, pro-homeschooling...this is how it manifests at the local level. Rohrabacher was Putin's Favorite Congressman for a reason and his minions in HB are still kicking...we must not let them prevail. We are better than this.
On an international level this level of extremism and hate has been boosted by our enemies including Russia. See the March 2019 article excerpt below for context.
"The World Congress of Families (WCF), a notorious anti-LGBTQ group that's reportedly received funding from sanctioned Russian oligarchs, is hosting its annual conference in Verona, Italy next month. And a number of Americans have decided to join them."
"Among the Americans slated to speak at the WCF conference are John Eastman, former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and now a professor at Chapman University, and megachurch pastor Jim Garlow. According to the WCF's roster, they will also be joined by Mike Donnelly, a higher-up at the right-wing Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), and Sean O'Hare, the chairman of one of the most prominent anti-abortion groups aimed at American youth."
"John Eastman has worked closely with WCF head Brian Brown on anti-LGBTQ initiatives in the past, including the National Organization for Marriage."
"Hacked emails list right-wing fundraiser partying with Russian fascists and oligarchs" "A new database of hacked emails reveals attendance at a 2014 gala in Russia." "The most notable Russian national appears to be Archpriest Dmitri Smirnov, who once compared LGBTQ people to murderers and bank robbers."
So you see this isn't about a flag. It's about letting Christo-Fascists and Russians win the day. We have to do better! There is nothing holy about discrimination against gays and lesbians. They need to know they are welcome here! 1 https://archive.thinkprogress.org/here-are-the-americans-speaking-at-a-hate-group-friendly-with-sanctioned-russian- oligarchs-bb7564932db2/

Subject: Support for Agenda Item 23 - flags on government property It is a sad sign of the times that activists are taking up CC time about a special interest group flag!!! A City Government should fly the State and American flags first and foremost.
If I, as a deplorable, wish to see my MAGA flag, I do so on my own property! There are so many more issues before our CC now especially the homeless issue and State mandate for affordable housing. With 500k fleeing CA the 'affordable' housing issue should be moot yet Governor hairspray thinks this is cause of homelessness!
And one more point....this other activist group for RSO.....so they get it on a ballot.... what would make someone in HB whose rents have gone up substantially, vote to give mobile home residents a stabilization and I happen to be one of the approximately 7k mobile home residents in HB.
Thank you for your time and efforts cleaning up HB from the past CC Marcia Morrell

I believe flying a flag that is not our government flags can be very divisive. If we allow one group's flag to fly on our poles, how can we deny another group from having their flag on our poles? Thank you for addressing this issue. I realize we are getting a lot of backlash because some folks think it's just about being against gays, but it's not. I'm very much against hanging the gay pride flag, but not because I'm against gays. It's about what belongs on the city government pole. And, I don't think hanging a flag that represents one's sexual preference is it. I wouldn't want to see a flag representing heterosexual preference either.

To whom it may concern
My name is Autumn McCall- DiGiovanni, I am a lifelong resident, born and raised in Huntington beach. I strongly disagree with flying any Flags other than the American flag, the state flag, and the City flag at City hall. I have had multiple sclerosis for over 20 years, I've been discriminated against over that time. Disabled persons are a very large marginal group. However, not once have I or anyone in the disabled community demanded a flag to represent us.
The rainbow flag does NOT represent me or anyone in my family or extended family. I actually find it VERY discriminatory. Ones sexuality should be private. It is irrelevant, we have discrimination laws innacted to support any real incidents of discrimination.
I demand our city does not raise any flag that is discriminatory to other citizens oh HB.

Dear City Council Members,
I am Nastasia Nastic a citizen of Huntington Beach and I am writing this email to address one of my grievances regarding the ban of flying the LGBTQ+ pride flag during the month of June which is also known as pride month. I understand that this legislation bans the flying of any other non-governmental flags but I still believe it is wrong. The pride flag does represent America and Huntington Beach. It is a symbol of equality, love, and acceptance and something that could do no harm to our community. This change in which only the pride flag is removed from rotation is in itself evidence of being treated differently, and the intentional removal is discrimination against people who, of which have already been oppressed in voice and body, deserve to be held with the proper humane respect and voice by our community and city. Furthermore, this decision has upset a large number of Huntington Beach citizens. On February 9th, a petition was started to reverse this ban and in just 24 hours, it has reached over 1,100 signatures. This represents the voice of the people and community more than anything. I ask you to reconsider your decision and strive towards creating a city and community that represents inclusivity and acceptance. Thank you for your time and I hope this email sparks a change within our community.

Dear City Council Members,
The resolution to update the flag policy that Pat Burns introduced -and that was passed by the majority of the council at the last meeting, is being perceived by myself and other members in the community, as homophobic and regressive. I strongly disagree with his reasoning and I know that I am not alone.
Furthermore it's becoming increasingly clear that Pat Burns, Tony Strickland, Casey McKeon, and Gracey VanDerMark have no interest in serving the community as a whole and will only be pandering to the interests of those who are funding their campaigns (I'm against the campaign contribution raise too, by the way).
Shame on the four of you for eliminating zoom access participation. You should be looking for a ways to increase access for the community, not take it away.
I am acutely aware of the people online (or in your ears), who may want to say that an opinion like this is coming from people outside of the community, or that this is at the behest of some org — but they are wrong. I have lived here for 20 years and have even more family that has lived in this city for their entire lives.
Most everything this new council majority has done so far has been completely self-serving and not in the interest of the community at large.
These decisions will cost the city of Huntington Beach money in lost revenue - in the long and short term, so I hope that will least get your attention.
Sincerely,
Rebecca S.

Dear HB Councilmembers,
I live in Huntington Beach with my husband and 2 school age kids. I am also a Psychologist in private practice. Mental health struggles are high right now for so many. A main theme I see with my clients who struggle, especially with suicidality, is not feeling a sense of belonging. Sometimes all it takes is one more sign from your community that you do not belong to send a struggling person over the edge. Please do not be a part of a system that contributes to the pain of others. Let's be a part of a system that contributes to the helping hand of humanity. One that says "I got you." Let's save lives. Bring back the flag. Send messages to the community that let them know they are enough and they too are a part of something.

As a resident of HB since 2004 | thank you for bringing to our attention that only 17 California cities fly the pride flag as I thought it was a majority of California. I agree with your decision.

Dear City Council Members,
I lived & worked in HB for years. When I make the decision where I will go to spend the day at the beach, where I will go to shop, where I will go to vacation, | look for cities that value equality, such as Long Beach, Costa Mesa and Laguna Niguel.

Dear City Council Members,
My name is Abby Hunt and I am the Youth Program Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center OC. I work with youth in schools all over Orange County and I have seen first hand the importance of support and safe spaces for the health and well-being of marginalized youth. Voting to pass an ordinance that would ban the flying of the PRIDE Flag shows that Huntington Beach is not an accepting, inclusive and safe city for the LGBTQ+ community. HB City Council,
You were elected to represent the citizens of Huntington Beach. Many of whom have written the Council asking that the pride flag offen continue to fly at City Hall. This is an inclusive city and as such we should show it by representing as such.
Flying the pride flag would accomplish this. The six branches of the armed forces flags? Not so much. Please continue to consider the value of accepting All in our beachside community. Thank you.

Dear Council Members,
Huntington Beach has been home to my family for the past 23 years. Wow. Simply wow. I just leaned that Pat Burns created the vehicle to ban flying the pride flag which our City has flown for the past few years during pride month that occurs in June. What is even more pathetic, is that you Mr. Burns, attempt to justify your hate and bigotry by suggesting that the pride flag is decisive. Banning the pride flag from our City is the poster act for creating division, and demonstrates the hateful and bigoted fabric of your being.
When Huntington Beach during the 2020 election season received national notoriety for being the meeting place for racist violent white nationalists, my family was so proud to see our City flying the pride flag. This simple act of support to our LGBT friends and family was truly heartwarming, and we were so proud of our City. The action taken by our City Council was hateful, mean spirited, bigoted, and a shameful act. You have demonstrated to the world, that Huntington Beach is not a welcoming town to many of its residents and visitors.
Sadly,
Chuck

2) "All are represented equally under the flag of the United Stated of America" - this is simply NOT TRUE.

Dear City Council Members,
I do not live in Huntington Beach, but I support inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ Community. Voting to pass an ordinance that would ban the flying of the PRIDE Flag shows that Huntington Beach is not an accepting, inclusive, and safe city for the LGBTQ+ community. I'm not sure who you are trying to appease with the decision to stop flying the PRIDE Flag in June, but it is short-sighted and not good for the businesses or residents of Huntington Beach.
Flying the PRIDE Flag is such a simple way to support inclusivity. I am so disappointed with the City Council of Huntington Beach, that you would take an action that makes people I know and love feel unsafe and unwelcome in your city.
Sincelery,
Juanita Wilcox

Hello Representatives of Huntington Beach,
I write to you with sadness and anger. The people receiving this message are were elected to represent the citizens of Huntington Beach. That means ALL citizens regardless of beliefs, identities and personal preferences.
Pride month is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans. Pride events are about human rights, empowering LGBTQ+ individuals to reclaim the rights and freedoms they are denied, and the public space they often feel excluded from. Visibility is crucial to fighting shame and social stigma, marching in the face of threats and violence. In this case, visibility is simply flying a flag for size weeks.
Flying a Blue Lives Matter flag is a symbol of solidarity and pride to a group of people. Just like the Pride Flag. How is one group considered divisive and one not? These flags shed the same purpose yet one was banned from being flown.
Regardless of political stance or personal opinions, once again you were chosen to represent Huntington Beach. That means representing all the people that come in it wether it is police, LGBTQ indiviuals and every other person in this city.
I really hope this issue is reconsidered.
Thank you
Grace Rogers

Hello,
My name is David Zimmerman. I live in Irvine, CA, and have many friends in Huntington Beach. As a fellow Orange County resident I urge you to CONTINUE flying the pride flag at City Hall.
The impact of moving backward is far worse when the flag has already been flown. When you take away visibility it encourages others to take the same actions in their personal lives. You will see an uptick in LGBQ hate crimes in your city by setting this example. As members of the LGBTQ community, we do not ask for much and this is a symbol of equality that has been earned and In my own life, I've experienced hate right here in Orange County. I had a total stranger scream "Faggot!' to me on the beach while minding my own business with my husband. We need leaders that will stand for ALL people in Orange County and not ones that waste precious time on something as innocuous as the pride flagwhich is a symbol of love, inclusivity, and progress.
I urge you to listen to the people and hear their stories about how this will affect the community.
Best,
David Zimmerman

Dear Huntington Beach City Council,
I am writing to you about your recent decision to not fly the LGBTQ+ flag outside of government buildings during the month of June. This decision directly affects and is seen as an attack on LGBTQ+ individuals. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it hurts to see a once very accepting city retract this acceptance. Additionally, the decision to continue flying other flags (more than just the State and National flag, reiterates that this is directed at the LGBTQ+ community and not just a decision to stop flying certain I am asking you to act on this decision and hope that Huntington Beach will allow the LGBTQ+ flag to be flown again. Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter!

Good morning,
Our city already has a robust flag policy in place that allows for any group that would like to apply to have a commemorative flag for a day, week or month.
Why do we need an ordinance ? In the future, with this ordinance, if a group like the Little League wins the LI, World Series or our sister city visits, it would take 3 City Council meetings to get approval. That seems totally unnecessary and quite frankly a bit ridiculous.
We strongly oppose an ordinance to deal with flags.
Don't we have more important issues, like housing insecurity, public safety, streets that need repair and a robust infrastructure maintenance program that should be your focus? CJ and RM Ryder

Dear City Council,
I am a 40 year resident in my 70's. I find it extremely disturbing that you are even voting to remove special flags from our City Hall and other locations in the city. Especially the Rainbow "pride" flag that we are proud to be flying to show our city is an inclusive city that extends acceptance to all our citizens. This is a sign to all that we are going backwards in any efforts of unity. If this measure passes, I will be embarrassed that I live in such a place.
It is difficult to excuse this sort of behavior in a country that is built on diversity. It speaks volumes of the sort of place we are when we reverse something that stands for love of all humanity.
I hope you will reconsider and vote to continue to flag all past approved flags on our city flagpoles.

Greetings,
Please reconsider the proposal to limit the flags that can be flown on city property. This move is clearly about the silly culture wars that are dividing our town and country. We play into China's and Russia's hands and goals if we continue to focus on division rather than unity. Nothing could be more un-American than to exclude rather than include our fellow citizens, especially those who often struggle to gain basic acceptance. This move would continue the decline in our lovely city's reputation that suffered so much during the Tito Ortiz fiascos. Hatred and intolerance are never the answer to how to live together in peace.

It demonstrates your ignorance, lack of empathy, and pure cruelty to silence members of your own community. As a gay man, it makes me feel like my leaders don't see me or respect me as a human being.
HB residents did not vote for you to play culture wars and invalidate the existence of an entire community, some of which voteed for you. Also, the city has received national bad press that leaves a negative impression of Huntington Beach and is embarrassing to those who live here.

As we have seen with the news coverage and the cattle calls on this agenda it has caused a lot of division on this issue, exactly what this agenda item was designed to avoid. At the last city council meeting we saw an outpouring of Out-Of-Community support and emails from people who do not reside in our community. There were two polls on our Local Community Forums on if we should only fly our American Flag, State Flag, and City Flag only or Should we fly the Pride Flag or any other Specical Interests Flags on our city properties, the results of these polls from the people who reside in our community was 90% opposed to flying any other flags including the Pride Flag. We allow anyone to speak on the issue but because of all the out-of-community speakers and emails, this effort has been skewed by outside influences from people who are not affected and do not live in our community.
Our city of HB now has the resources through its social media efforts and our ability to communicate with the HB community, I feel that our city council should direct our staff to design and conduct a poll that reaches people in our community to ask them what flags should be allowed on our public property, as we know many from out of our community will show up to speak during public comments and send their Cut-and Paste emails inspired by some of our city council members who for Political Party reasons will put out the Cattle Call to all in their political party out of our community people to speak on the issue to Skew the conversation. This is why we need to limit the outside political party influences that an HB City Poll would avoid, This is necessary and directed at those who reside in our community, this poll should be done this coming Weekend through Monday and Tuesday before the city council meeting where we will see an on-slot of media and out-of-community speakers and their copy-and-paste emails.

The proposed rule regarding flag policies is most disappointing. A change in rules is not necessary at all. Huntington Beach keeps getting bad press and people are already not coming, or spending money here. I'm disgusted at the direction the new city council members are dragging this community. Their goal is hate and waste (of our taxpayer dollars) for some media attention. Pathetic!

For consistency I ask that you amend Agenda Item 23, Ordinance NO. 4283. To remove the -GB Qt pride flag from being flown on city property the city should have also removed the POW/MIA flag to attain a neutral stance by the city and the by the City Council. If one non-government flag is allowed, you then must consider all others. If no non-government flag is allowed the rules are clear and no contenders need to be considered.
My wife and I have owned and operated the Huntington Beach company listed below since 1990(33 Years) and have lived in Huntington Beach for over 35 years.

Members of the Huntington Beach Council & Staff members, It is time to provide a counter-balance view of HB resident opinion to "the partisan crowd that appeared at the last HB CC Meeting" and show our support for this bold and courageous agenda item.
1. 1 am a 37 year resident of Huntington Beach, so I speak with some knowledge about the "the Surf City" we've come to love.
2. It is not only good policy but good governance to only display the flags of our country, state, Armed Services of the United States, and the POW/MIA.
3. Flying other special interest flags is not only bending toward divisiveness of our wonderful inclusive community but promotes possible controversy which is not the role of city government.
4. It is time we focus on the major issues and responsibilities of local government: Public Safety, Irresponsible High-Density Development, Homeless/Transient issues, Sober Homes Issues and not just led around by the hand by all the loud, woke and divisive activists that seem to pander for a progressive agenda.
5. Agenda item 23 is a responsible action and does not limit any group from displaying any personal flag of choice at their own home, Activist meeting locations, or businesses I strongly indorse this proposed ordinance for the city of Huntington Beach Ted Ross

Subject: Support for Agenda Item 23 - Gov't Flags on City Property Dear City Council,
As a proud resident of Huntington beach for over 43 years, I firmly believe any and all Huntington Beach City buildings/properties, schools etc should only fly The American Flag, The California State Flag and a City of HB Flag. I have no objections to flying the MIA flag or Support Police Flags.
However, I strongly disagree with flying the LGBTQ+ pride flag during June, or any other month. If any HB resident wants to fly that flag on their own property I would have no objection at all, but not on any City property. Personal choice should be kept off of any City owned property.
Our City Council has far more really important matters to discuss and deal with, without a gay pride flag being one of them. I am proud of the Flags you currently fly, but I am very displeased when a gay pride flag was raised below our true patriot flags last year.
Sincerely,
Michael Arnell.

Dear City Council-
Our city should not cave in to special interests demanding that our city fly their special interest flags. The flags of our city ,state, and country simply states our geographical location.
It does not state support for one group or another.
Anyone who wishes to support their own cause is free to fly their flag on their own property.
There are a veritable plethora of causes (flags) and our City Council is not obligated or should be obligated to bow to any of them, for once you do, you MUST then do the same for all who claim they have a cause.
This is just common sense and simplifies this discussion.
Sincerely,
Bill and Debb Clay ( yes we are homeowners in Huntington Beach, not outsiders who are being paid to flood City Council with support for their special interest group)

Subject: Agenda Item #23
I have been a resident of Huntington Beach for over 45 years. I am writing to express my support for Agenda Item #23, Government Flags on City Property. Identity politics have no place in our city. We are one people with liberty and justice for all.
Our City Council members should not be spending their valuable time on which flags should fly as they have much more important issues to insure the safety and unity of our city members. This would include issues such as crime, solving the homeless issue, keeping fentanyl and other drugs off the street and coming up with a reasonable solution to the HDD issue.
Fly your identity flags on your own property and not on city government buildings.
Sincerely,

Dear City of Huntington Beach,
Please do not eliminate the flying of all non-government and non-military flags on city property. Our city is more than just government and miliary friendly. We are humans with interests outside of these two categories.
Our community supports humans and other entities, and our city should reflect that.
Fondly,

Subject: Agenda item 23 oppose removal of the Pride Flag Hello Council Members and Mayor Strickland,
I am writing in opposition to Item 23, the ordinance that would prevent the city from flying the Pride flag. This ordinance would also take away the City Council's current ability to vote at a public meeting to decide what commemorative flags will fly from city facilities.
Why would any of you want to take away the right of an elected body to vote on an issue that is obviously of a great deal of interest and importance to your constituents? Issues such as whether or not to fly the Pride flag from city facilities are exactly the kind of issue the council should vote on. The residents of Huntington Beach deserve to know your stand on a host of issues, controversial or not.
The agenda item that appeared at the last meeting directing staff to draft an ordinance has generated nationwide negative publicity for the city. Rather than appearing as a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ residents and visitors, the city now looks like one of intolerance and bigotry. You can somewhat mitigate the impact of this negative publicity on our city by voting to reject this ordinance.
Please retain your right as elected officials in Huntington Beach to vote on what kind of flags are flown from city facilities, and oppose this agenda item.
Thank you,
Connie Boardman
