It is my feeling this is just an opportunity to place our city in a Negative Light and Run to the Press to report on it. The Corrupt Three would like nothing more than to make this seem like a City-Wide problem when in fact it was localized to One Street in One Neighborhood and likely by One Person. The Corrupt Three will use this statement to bolster their False Claims that the City of HB is made up of White Supremacists, Antisemitism, and LBGQT Hate Groups. This is their thinly veiled effort to make any opposition to the LBGQT influences on our children, Hate Speech when in Fact it is Free Speech. This is not Mosers first attempt to deny Free Speech, I remember her agenda to limit what we could speak on during public comments, If the Corrupt Three do not agree on a subject, it must be Hate Speech.

Subject: Support Item #19
As a city, we should support anti-hate, whether it be antisemitic, against LGBTQ, race, religions.

I am also against a possible proposal to create a City Ordinance for the City's Libraries. I understand parents may want to control what their children see and read, but it's up to each family to make their ow decisions. Not the opinion of a few. Restricting the library's ability to have certain books made available for parents to decide sounds like taking our liberties away.

Members of the American Library Association are usually librarians with a master's degree. Keep obscene material out is already illegal at state and federal levels. I find this agenda item is an attempt to control a discussion that should be left for families to decide.

Please do not allow this to happen.

Subject: City Council/Public Financing Authority 6/20/23 - Item 23-534 I am writing to object to this item. My family has lived here for since 1994. In my opinion, we are denouncing something that does not exist. The HB culture does not represent hate. Maybe thugs from outside of HB that are engaged by political agendas; but, not from our residents. In fact, that is one of the primary reasons other than coastal that attracts people to HB.. the HB vibe. Never have I witnessed or been part of or associated with any HB residents who fit into this 'hate category'..or any for that matter. There are already laws in effect that address this.

I do believe that this is a bigger agenda for Bolten, Moser and Kalmick. They continue to say that there is 'hate by Huntington Beach residents'. I find it very suspicious that these flyers went out while Moser continues to support the interfaith council who have demonstrated hate themselves.

Bolten, you knew that GCT filed a lawsuit, by the smirk on your face during the meeting when Mr. Gates mentioned he had received no notice or knowledge of a lawsuit regarding the Air Show. We saw the financial summary. What I suspect is that YOU and your anti HB mates want to see is the document with conditions that they agreed on that have nothing to do with financials so that this can be provided to Carr to assist in her lawsuit if it is true that the city did not defend her. Or, it could be that you just want to do an anti HB propaganda spin. Clearly the three of you are working against HB's welfare and doing everything to try to ruin HB's image. Moser, that woman who approached you in Central Park was telling you the truth and not hate speech... that you are ruining HB. Moser you have been disrespectful to residents speaking their opinions even calling them names. That's not hate? You will never be reelected along with Kalmick and Bolten.

Mayor Strickland, Pro Tem Gracey Larrea-Van Der Mark, Councilmembers Pat Burns, Casey McKeon thank you for all you are doing for Huntington Beach residents. You have the true pulse of Huntington Beach resident majority. We all see what you are doing and your fans have tripled. You have gained our trust, kept your promises (and more) and we see how hard you work. Pro Tem Gracey Larrea-Van Der Mark, your strength and dedication to HB Citizens through all the hate and propaganda against you is amicable. THANK YOU and your family for your strength and we continue to pray for you and your family. We see all of your sacrifices and appreciate all you do. The communication is icing on the cake..have not seen that since we have lived here! Best regards,
Kris Carroll

Subject: Huntington Beach City Council agenda items #18 and 109 I am a longtime resident of Huntington Beach. In the strongest terms possible, | urge you to vote against agenda item #18 and in favor of agenda item #109.

Book banning is a symptom of ignorance and hate. It is an attempt to whitewash and erase history, and ensure that only one religion or opinion is allowed in the public sphere. Nothing good is accomplished by book banning, and it is anathema to the basic tenets of our system of government. Withdrawing from the American Library Association is foolish and will only damage our library.

The City of Huntington Beach needs to reaffirm its opposition to white supremacy, antisemitism, and anti-LGBTQ sentiments and actions for the sake of the entire community and its future as a desirable place to live and visit.

I insist that you consider all the people of Huntington Beach and vote no on agenda item #18 and yes on agenda item #109.

Thank you,

Subject: Upcoming City Council meeting; items 18 and 19 I am a retired physician (Ob/Gyn) who has been living in Huntington Beach since 1996. I am also gay. When I was discovering my sexual orientation when I was young, there were no resources available to me to help me navigate through this coming out process. I was too afraid to talk to anyone about it, especially my parents. How reassuring it would have been to go to the library and read about other people experiencing the same issues I was facing alone. That is what libraries are for - getting information, researching ideas, finding yourself in other peoples' experiences by reading fiction written by people who have suffered through the process and want to make it easier for others.

By forcing minors to ask adults to take books out of the library for them, you are thwarting one of the a major reasons books are in the library - the ability to explore whatever you want on your own, even for minors. Especially now, when the suicide rate for LGBTQ-trans minors is skyrocketing.

Another point, reading books in libraries does not make teens more sexually active. Not having reproductive health education is what has been shown to lead to increases in teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, not reading fiction. People who really care about children will make sure that accurate sex education is available to them.

With girls as young as 12, 13 getting pregnant, waiting until they are 14 or older for accurate sex education is too late.

Finally, 1 whole-heartedly agree with Dan Kalmick regarding the need for Huntington Beach to reaffirm its opposition to white supremacy, anti-semitism, and anti-LGBTQ sentiments. There is no room for hate in Huntington Beach.

I firmly support action item 19 and stand firmly against item 18, and hope the City Council takes these same stands.

Sincerely,
Beverly Sansone, MD, FACOG

Subject: Proposed Book Ban
I am a relatively new resident of Huntington Beach. I have been appalled by the actions of this council and City Attorney. THIS IS NOT FLORIDA and we do not want it to be. I am vehemently opposed to the current agenda item #18 to censor reading materials. It is another hateful step toward authoritarianism. Please explain the qualifications for the City Attorney or council members to choose which books are age appropriate or "pornographic" for children other than your own. This is government overreach and treading on parental rights.

Public libraries serve all residents. Stop wasting taxpayer money and energy on these offensive and unnecessary matters.

Additionally, I strongly support agenda item #19 for the council to denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ+ hate.

Dear City Council of HB,
Agenda item #18 put forward by Mayor Pro Tem Van Der Mark is questionable. Exactly what books by name are at issue in our HB Libraries?
For the last nearly 50 years our library board has chosen wisely the array of books we possess. I have no reason not to trust their knowledge and integrity for choosing suitable books now.

To start the banning of books is reminiscent of the start of Fascism in Europe! Let us NOT go there!! Respectfully, NO on item 18.

Item 19 on the agenda is a positive step for our City to counteract hate which is so poisonous to all citizens.

Respectfully, YES on item 19.

Sincerely,
Juana Mueller.

Subject: In support of Item 19 Denouncing Hate in HB
I am writing in support of Item 19 23-534. It is imperative that the city council explicitly denounces antisemitism, white supremacy, and any and all anti-LGBTQ+ hate if they want to truly meet the highest standard establishing diversity, equality, and inclusion within our community. Most recently, the dangerous rhetoric espoused by Mayor Pro Tem Gracey Van Der Mark on social media and the HBUHSD meeting are just fueling the flames of hate and division. I do not currently feel welcome or represented by her, her words, or her actions. I don't feel like this is a safe place for my children and their friends to grow up. This public statement will be a great start, the bare minimum really, at rebuilding and repairing the relationships between the community and the council.

Huntington Beach City Council,
I am writing to express my opposition to the Strategic Plan by Ms. Van Der Mark to ban books from our City Libraries, especially in the guise of 'protecting the children' or as she stated, 'infecting our children with obscenity or pornography'. If Council members want to limit what their children are exposed to, they can supervise their own children. But no one is going to dictate what is appropriate for my children, although I would trust librarians in recommendations. My three children, who are products of the Huntington Beack If our city council is so concerned about protecting the children, maybe invest that energy toward stamping out hate in our community. As a father of children with Jewish heritage and a gay daughter, after the recent incident of fliers with Anti-Semitic and Anti-LGBTO rhetoric dispersed in my neighborhood, I would think banning books would not be a priority.

I am a physician and have lived and worked in Huntington Beach for 30 years. This city has become an embarrassment.

I write to urge you to support Agenda Item #19 - a resolution denouncing antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGB 1Q hate. If you can't all get on board with this, we have a real problem. I know that some members of the council have been accused of antisemitism and disrespect for gays. I also know you have denied such accusations. Here is your chance to show us that the accusers were wrong. Please support the resolution, and go further - use your position to speak out loudly and publicly against acts like those hateful flyers that dropped last week. Let's see some positive action!
Sure, we have the right of free speech in this country. But when that speech hurts people, we have the responsibility to speak up and say "That's wrong!". I hope you will unanimously doing the right thing.

Dear City Council Members,
I am a regular library patron as well as a member of the Friends of the Huntington Beach Library. It's absurd that the City Attorney would be granted decision making authority over the books offered by our library and that the City would sever ties with the American Library Association. With so many more pressing issues facing the City, it is hard to understand why the City Council wants to step into the highly controversial and unpopular issue of book bans and bring more negative, embarrassing attention on the City. Please reconsider this item and vote NO.

I'd also like to voice my strong support for Item 19 denouncing recent instances of antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hatred. The attached flyer was thrown into the driveways of my neighborhood last week. Not only is this type of hatred deeply disturbing, it is an assault on the environment to have all this garbage in plastic bags thrown into our neighborhoods. This resolution will help spread the word that actions such as this will not be tolerated.

Sincerely,

agenda item 18
I'm writing to oppose agenda item 18 for tomorrows meeting. I support the librarians who are trained in age appropriate material maintaining the jurisdiction over books chosen for the library and oppose having any books banned or the city attorney being the one to choose from a politically biased agenda. I believe in the freedom to choose as a parent and American and this is fascism .

Agenda item 19
I support agenda item 19. I believe Huntington Beach needs to stand up and denounce anti semitism, white supremacy and anti LGBTQ hate. Hate crimes have increased in OC for the last seven years and we have an obligation to the members of our community who are experiencing violence and or fear of violence. Huntington beach has a history of being closed off and unwelcoming and this is the minimum we should do to change that reputation and show they were are an inclusive community welcome to all.

Esteemed City Council,
I wanted to communicate my strong opposition to agenda item #18. The idea that pornographic and obscene materials are being made available to kids in our public libraries is absurd. One of the books in question that Mayor Pro Tem Van Der Mark has used as an example in the past, "Gender Queer," is in the adult biography section as seen when searching the library catalogue. Librarians are professionals with degrees and I trust them as well as families to be able to access materials of their choice without our city attorney prescreening books which is effectively censorship and book bans. I believe this false notion that kids are being exposed to inappropriate materials is simply a distraction from the likely action that many LGBTQ+ types of books will be blocked from older teens. I am an English Teacher and as an educator and an LGBTQ+ ally who knows that representation reduces suicide rates, I find this agenda item to be very disturbing. This agenda item is anti-freedom and anti-choice and is a red herring. We should be supporting our libraries and encouraging kids to read as they grapple with massive amounts of disinformation and the new world of A.I. This agenda item itself is based on misinformation. I also support agenda item #19 as the words of the mayor denouncing the hate-filled-fliers and the actions of the council majority are at odds with one another. Speaking out against kids who are encouraging love and tolerance and banning the pride flag sends a message to the community about what types of public safety the council prioritizes and it isn't that of the most marginalized and vulnerable --
With gratitude,

To all city council members:

I volunteer at the HB Library as a literacy tutor and am a resident of Huntington Beach. Banning books is not a good idea for a democracy. I ask you vote no on agenda item 18 at the June 20th meeting. Also the American Library Association is a highly respected institution that provides excellent guidance to local libraries.

I also ask your support for agenda item 19. During these trying times where many are working to destroy democracy, it is appropriate for the HB City Council to stand for democracy by denouncing antisemitism, white supremacy and anti LGBTQ hate.

Thank you.

Subject: Opinion on Items 15, 18, and 19
Item 15-1 believe that we need housing and services for the Homeless Individuals, Couples and their pets, in HB, to continue. This could be the Healing Center (Comprehensive Service; housing, medical, mental health, substance abuse treatment, and more) or the Navigation Center with Supportive Housing, or the Navigation Center alone. The Navigation Center has shown by it being filled, and well utilized, to be one of the cities programs, to address the needs of the homeless, and community, and actually there is a need for another site as well. Without a shelter, the police are not able to enforce anti-camping and anti-loitering laws.

Item 18; I am against the proposed Book Ban, and the plan to part ways with the American Library Association. This is an over reach by the City Attorney, and current City Council, and it takes away the responsibility of those who have been professional trained to make those decisions. It is an overreach.

Item 19-1 am in favor of the proposal that "The City Council of the City of Huntington Beach denounces antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate" Many of the decisions of the new City Council of HB, intended or unintended have increased tensions in our city, and even though feelings of intolerance were here before, people now have a voice, to express hatred towards the LGBTQ community, the Jewish Community and those of another race. Decisions to restrict the flag, stop invocations by the Greater Interfaith Council, not to pass the Housing Element-to allow Affordable Housing, have fostered these views of intolerance. Allowing people to speak to others at City Council in demeaning and hateful ways, fosters permission to talk and act in this way. This statement by the council is important, to prevent hateful thoughts and speech, to turn into dangerous actions, and harmful actions to others.

As a Huntington Beach resident I ask that the City Council take the following actions for these agenda items:

Item 15- Fate of the Navigation Center-I approve these proposals: 1. Healing Center- Many services tor those housed at the Navigation Center (Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Medical) 2. Navigation Center and Supportive Housing 3. Navigation Center only 4. Sell the land but it can only be used for special use. I'm for all but the last option. No shelter then no law enforcement for homeless encampments.

Item 18- Library Ban and withdrawal from the American Library Association- A No Vote is recommended
Item 19- A motion that the HBCC denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate, which sadly is on the increase in HB. A Yes Vote is recommended Thank you,

Subject: Board Agenda for 6/20
Dear HB City Council Members,
I am a long time resident, downtown homeowner, and parent of a child in our local school district. I am writing to denounce Resolution 18 set forth by our council member, Gracie Van Der Mark, and to support Resolution I have been disheartened by the various national ploys to conflate queer communities with child grooming, pornography, and just general danger to children. Gracie Van Der Mark's resolution to change our library policies is a thinly veiled attempt to bring hate to our community and to follow in the divisive national trend of culture war politics. If you wanted to protect children, we as a city, would create a community where ALL children are welcome, regardless of their gender or sexual identity.

No reasonable human being wants to make pornography accessible to children and I would personally never support such access. This is not at stake. Instead, the current city council is trying to drag our beautiful city away from inclusiveness to a hateful past, where queer members of the United States were considered dangerous to children and less than others. This is a smoke and mirrors attempt to censor LGBTQ literature in our libraries.

There is an attack on education, including our teachers and our librarians, nationally. I do not want HB to get involved in the messy, distracting, and divisive culture wars being waged across this country. Please focus on issues that will actually improve our city and leave the conflation of queer literature and queer people with sexualizing children to the annals of a hateful past.

Please reject resolution 18 and support resolution 19.

And, for the record, I would like it to be known that there are members of our city, myself included, who not only want open access to information and education at our local libraries, but want to welcome queer members of HB as equal members of our community. We see you, welcome you, and support you even if our council fails you.

Thank you,

Dear Huntington Beach City Council,
As residents since 1986, we are writing to express our concern about your June 20, 2023 meeting agenda, Items 18 and 19.

The American Library Association which is comprised of roughly 50,000 members, has set library standards since its inception in 1876. Without question, its members are far more qualified in their backgrounds, training and experience to distinguish what constitutes obscene and pornographic material than the Huntington Beach City Attorney. We find any attempt to ban books or control our public library reading material to be inappropriate, uncalled for and an extra unqualified censor.

Please consider the values you have set forth for your own conduct, among which are "Humility, Social Awareness and Integrity." The time and resources you have at your disposal have come from all community members, not just some. Rather than banning books and seizing control over our library, we ask that you invest your power of your privilege as leaders to ensure that Huntington Beach is a community known for its stand against all forms of discrimination and diversity.

It is our sincere hope that each of you is committed to a more inclusive and compassionate community for and we will all be safer and more "people-centric' for it.

Sincerely,

Please ban hate, not books.

As HB residents, we oppose item 18, re the proposed book ban for city libraries. The idea would be an unconstitutional imposition of extreme religious views into the function of our public library, which is to serve all users regardless of faith or political views. Professional library staff are fully capable of choosing materials for our public library. Concerned parents can screen out anything they feel is unacceptable. Item 18 would also require the city attorney to determine what library materials are legally obscene. This is not a proper role for a city attorney, especially the HB attorney's office which seems stretched with a heavy workload already. Please vote NO on item 18.

We support item 19, a motion for the city to denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate.

This is a simple statement of tolerance that everyone should support, especially given ongoing hate incidents in our city. Please vote YES on item 19.

Please. Ban hate. Not books.

I am writing to express my strong opposition to ordinance #18, which seeks to ban access for minors to "obscene" books from our public library. I believe it is a parent's right to decide what their child can or cannot read, not some conservative elected official. No one, including our city attorney, Michael Gates, should have the decision making authority to dictate what books are "obscene" and therefore not available to the public.

I strongly believe that banning books goes against the principles of free speech and intellectual freedom. It is important that we allow individuals to make their own choices about what they read and how they educate themselves. By banning books, we are limiting the knowledge and ideas that are available to us.

I urge you to reconsider this ordinance and to support the freedom of expression and intellectual freedom.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

As for Agenda item #19, I strongly urge your support for this resolution denouncing recent instances of antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti- LGBTQ hatred. This type of discrimination should have zero intolerance in our city

I write to urge you to support Agenda Item #19 - a resolution denouncing antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate.

It must be the start of the campaign season because this item is nothing more than bait to get one or more of the rational four to make some statement that can be used against them later on. Apparently Mosier, Bolton and Kalmick are trying to create wedge issues by implying that anyone who disagrees with them is a haters or white supremacist. This is just more of the Kalmick three step. Plant a story in the register, raise the issue at the council meeting and the get the Register to cover it as news. IT IS NOT NEWS......DON'T RESPOND......LET THEM HAVE THEIR SAY ....THEN VOTE THEM DOWN.

To whom it may concern,
I'm writing to express my concerns about the June pride display in the central library.

I consider some of the material, sexually inappropriate, especially considering the age groups the display is targeted to, but due to recent displays of anti-semitism, white supremacy and disturbing, hateful, ideology by the LGBT movement, I consider the display offensive to all adherents of the Abrahamic traditions.

Although the first amendment is one of the bedrocks of our society, I comment Councilor Van Der Mark for her effort in making obscene and pornographic material unavailable to minors. As a community, it's our responsibility to protect the minds of our youth at all costs.

To whom it may concern,
I'm writing to express my concern that the denouncement of anti LGBT rhetoric, anti-semitism and white supremacy would be listed together.

Let me explain. As a Christian, I believe the LGBT (Pride) movement is as antisemitic and pro-white supremacy as it I believe that God came to Earth, taught and suffered for the sins of humanity as a dark skinned Jewish man. I would therefore rejoice in an affirmative vote against all forms of white supremacy and antisemitism.

The Pride community were honored by the LA Dodgers last week and the representative of Pride were the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. This group have openly mocked and specialized the death of Jesus on the cross. This is an obvious affront to all adherents of the Abrahamic tradition. On a secular level, this group have mocked the suffering, torture and brutal execution of a dark skinned, Jewish man at the hands of those who identify as Europeans. It's doesn't get anymore "white-supremacy" and "antisemitic" than this.

I would urge the city council to condemn the LGBT (Pride) movement for their wonton disrespect and disregard for the Jewish community and people of color.

Sincerely,
Domnic McGee

We oppose Agenda Item #18.

Before we begin to speak on this agenda item; this should never have been placed on our city council agenda. TO ALL CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS, YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO IMPOSE CENSORSHIP NOR IS IT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! (Government overreach).

Since book banning is a fascist agenda, it will not be difficult to determine how the majority will vote on this agenda item. (We are sorry to say.) How often do our City Council members go to our Central Library? We wonder how many CC members are Library card holders?
Earlier last week, due to an Edison Bolt TV video shown on Pride Month, Ms Van Der Mark made a remark about Parents determining what their children should view. After we viewed the actual full video, we determined some of her portrayals of the video were lies. Applying her statement about parents, then they should be the ones determining what their children should read or not read.

We should fight censorship, not condone or enforce it. This agenda item sets a dangerous precedent. We have seen, read and studied what censorship can do leading up to WWII. (Information that is available to all in our library!)
Since the new council members have come onboard, I would like them to start recommending something positive for our city to bring people together instead of instilling more divisiveness.

We support Agenda Item #19.

It would be nice to think our city truly denounces antisemitism, white supremacy, (nazis) and anti-LGBTQ. Denounce ALL forms of hate.

For those CC members that may be inclined to vote against this agenda item, please keep in mind there is another election in the near future.

Dear City Council Members:

I am completely against any attempt to ban books from the HBPL. Proposal 18 harkins back to Nazi regimes and others who attempt to police individual freedoms to read, learn, and think critically. Ms. Van Der and her ilk should be recalled for not representing the best interests of her constituents. Shame on her and others who promote this reprehensible ideology.

On the other hand, I'd like to commend the council members, Kalmick, Bolton, and Moser's prop number 19 which denounces antisemitism, white supremacy, and LGBT hate. These are the folks promoting higher human values of tolerance, acceptance, and open-mindedness.

Dear City Council- I would like to urge you to vote no on 18 and yes on 19.

I am disappointed to hear a council member bash our public schools and teachers. There is a lot of propaganda and misinformation about what is taking place in schools. As a board member of HBCSD I can tell you that our children are not exposed to obscene or age inappropriate material. The public is invited to make an appointment with the district office to look over any of our curriculum, we are not hiding anything. Agenda 18 is a thinly veiled attempt to ban books because of hate. Are we going to forget what happened in Nazi Germany? Our public institutions should be inclusive and caring about all our community members. It is a sad day when a resolution is needed to denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate. 1 Corinthians 13:13...."and the greatest of these is love" Diana Marks

To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: June 20, 2023 City Council Agenda Items 18 and 19 Dear Huntington Beach City Council,
We are writing to express our deep concern about Item 18 on your June 20, 2023 agenda, which would direct the City Manager to work with the City Attorney to make obscene and/or pornographic materials unavailable to minors and present new protocols for screening materials for the city's libraries. Given that stringent federal laws are already in place governing the accessibility of such materials to minors, it is difficult to understand what the purpose of this agenda item would be and what the council seeks to achieve with its proposed ordinance. Are there specific instances of violations of federal standards in HB libraries? Existing law would call for criminal prosecution if that is the case. The ancillary proposal to sever ties with the American Library Association is a peculiar, unexplained directive. The ALA-with roughly 50,000 members-has applied our country's library standards since its founding in 1876. Surely its members have more robust background, training and experience-and considerably more time-to distinguish what constitutes obscene and pornographic material than does the City Attorney. To propose otherwise is an overreach of the power you have been afforded by your community. Adoption of agenda item 18 would be a divisive, unproductive use of our local resources. Any attempt to ban books protected by federal law or control our public library is an assault on our community and our democracy.

As elected officials, you likely feel pressure to take action to solve problems that improve our community. As unique individuals, you probably have strong opinions on many of the divisive issues playing out across the country. But at a time when political polarization is feeding on itself, our hope is that you can resist the pressure to enter the political fray. As you know better than most citizens of HB, our city is strongest when our elected leaders collaborate and compromise to solve problems and provide services. Injecting the partisan divide into local decisions is sure to degrade the crucial relationships and trust you need to solve local issues.

As residents of this communicy since 1997, we ask you to be vigilant in protecting the rights of all of your constituents and ensure that we create a community in keeping with the "OneHB" outlined in the city's strategic plan. The time and the resources you have at your disposal have come from all of your community members, not just some. Rather than act on divisive issues that fall along party and ideological divides, we ask that you invest the power of your privilege as leaders to ensure that Huntington Beach is a community known for its stand against all forms of discrimination.

Finally, it is our sincere hope that each of you is willing to take a stand that is foundational to OneHB. Please advance Item 19 and tell your community that you "denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti- LGBTQ hate." We will all be safer and more "people-centric" for it.

With concern and hope,

Anti Semitism is a problem and should be denounced
White supremacy is primarily an "invented problem" to create strife between races. Denouncing it implies it is widespread, which it is not.

The big problem with the LGBTQ community is that hate is coming FROM them toward those who do not fully accept their demands. I think most people do not agree with their lifestyle but would be tolerant of it if it was not for this "in your face" hate they promote. The LGBTQ community does not want tolerance or acceptance, they want to force affirmation from everyone. And, if you do nor affirm them they hate you.

I am writing today to OPPOSE agenda item #19 on tomorrow's agenda. This item being submitted to "denounce hate in HB" is a 100% political move. It is so disturbing to watch the minority on the council constantly trying to divide our community along political lines. Subject: Support For Item #19: Denouncing Hate In Huntington Beach Council Members,
Sadly, it is once again necessary for Huntington Beach to denounce hatred after headline-grabbing incidents in the city, this time involving destruction of a Pride flag on private property and dissemination of homophobic and antisemitic literature in one of our neighborhoods.

Earlier this year, this City Council was reminded that the Pride flag was originally displayed at City Hall in June, 2021, after a "White Lives Matter" demonstration ended in violence in April of that year. It was a signal that everyone was welcome in Huntington Beach, and that hate would not be tolerated.

This Council then voted 4-3 for an ordinance that now blocks that flag from being flown at City Hall.

Earlier this year, this City Council was also reminded that the Interfaith Council was originally created in response to racist and antisemitic incidents in Huntington Beach, and then asked to provide invocations before Council meetings in response to still more hateful incidents in the city. The Interfaith Council is a powerful symbol and outstanding organization.

This Council then voted 4-3 to "fire" the Interfaith Council as providers of invocations before Council meetings.

Either of those 4-3 votes could have been accompanied by this statement. In fact, minority members of the Council suggested it at the time. It was clearly a choice not to send this message at that time, which was a message of its own.

It is now past time to set this right, and to put the City Council on the right side of a fight that has gone on for too long in Huntington Beach.

It is also time for city leaders to reexamine the exclusionary populism that can fire up a crowd of supporters but also send a dog-whistle to violent outside groups.

Dear Council members,
Please do not support agenda item 18. Politicians should not be able to determine what is appropriate reading material in a public library. They do this in China and Russia and other countries with oppressive governments. What will they determine is inappropriate next, and for whom. Maybe they determine books about women's rights, civil rights, or LGBTQ rights or history or science books are inappropriate and not just for minors.

Please do support item 19 on the agenda. The City Council needs to denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti- LGBTQ hate. The recent antisemitic flyers distributed in the city make it abundantly clear that the city has work to do to make itself an inclusive and welcoming place.

Agenda Item 18 and 19
My name is Audrey Prosser. I am a resident of Huntington Beach. I strongly oppose Agenda Item 18. It does nothing to keep kids away from Porn. It suggest that one person, the City Attorney, that has absolutely no training, no qualifications in education to be the one to determine what is best for another person to read. The only thing that this agenda item would do for certain is cost the residents money to defend lawsuits. It doesn't fool anyone. It is an attempt to target the LGBTQ Community put forth by an anti GBTQ, anti Semetic City Council member. It will be defeated in in a court of law and we will be holding the bill.

Please vote Yes on agenda Item 19. Loving your neighbor is a very good thing.

Subject: Support for Item #19! Emphatically ABHOR Item #18 Hello HB City Council Members,
My name is Stephanie Turner, and I grew up in awe of the HB's library system. Our main branch was and is my favorite place in our town. As I moved from the appropriately partitioned children's section to the YA's section and then to the adult's section, I relished in a spectrum of perspectives that helped form the person I am today.

And that person is extremely appalled and horrified by item #18 - Submitted by Mayor Pro Tem Van Der Mark - Selection, Display and Circulation of Library Books and Other Materials within Huntington Beach Public Libraries (HBPL).

Libraries should forever be an inclusive place of learning; a place where one can travel through pages and experience things no one person could travel to or experience alone. Book banning has absolutely no place in Huntington Beach. What right does the city attorney have to determine what is obscene? Where will the book restrictions end? The First Amendment was crafted to protect the press (and by extension books and knowledge) from persecution and proposed policies like Item #18. Please do inform us of how you are to use the First Amendment to evaluate books?
When I was in middle school at Mesa View, we read Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Even as a 12 year old, it was shocking to think of folks censoring books. That little girl had no idea that in 20 years time, she would be faced with the same totalitarian ideals in real life. It is extremely horrific and utterly embarrassing that Huntington Beach has fallen so low as to mirror a science fiction dystopia. Please right this atrocious wrong; reject item #18.

I, and I speak for my family as well, full-heartedly stand with item #19 - Submitted by Council Members Kalmick, Bolton, and Moser - Denouncing Hate in Huntington Beach. We completely and totally reject anti-semitism, white supremacy, and LGBTQIA+ hate. We stand with the LGBTQIA+ community. We will continue to reject hate that is spewed in our community; whether it comes from folks on the street or those who sit in chairs on our city council. For those amongst us who proliferate hate and racism, we see you and we feel great shame that you represent our beloved town.

I hope you all will do what is just and right. Everyone deserves to flourish in a community where they can read the books they want to read (and if they are minors - that conversation is between them and their parents!), worship the way that is best for them, and love who they choose to love. At the very least, folks should feel safe in their community! Folks should be able to grow, learn, and evolve into the best and truest versions of themselves in a compassionate town; something that is violently and traumatically stolen from them when racism and hate are permitted in HB.

I am abhorred that this email is necessary. I hope Huntington Beach will continue to be better, to do better by everyone in our community.

Thank you for your time,
Stephanie Turner

Dear City Council Members,
I have been a lifetime resident of Huntington Beach. I raised my children in Huntington Beach.

I grew up on a horse stable at Leslie and Warner Ave until 1976 when we moved our stables up onto Edwards Hill. I grew up working with people from a variety of cultures. I also, was bussed to the Harbour View School where the many of the children were mean to me and many of my friends who did not live in the Huntington Harbor.

It is important that we teach our young to be kind and respectful of all people. It is important to model kindness and respect. Most importantly, it is important that we stand up and denounce antisemitism, white supremacy and anti-LGBTQ hate. We value peace a safe, fun peaceful city.

Allowing hate to grow, and proposing policies that encourage division are frightening and irresponsible.

I stand and full support item #19 submitted by Council Members Kalmick, Bolton, and Moser - denouncing hate in Huntington Beach!
Thank you Dan, Rhonda and Natalie bringing this important work forward. I am saddened that this needs to be done and grateful that you have stepped up to do it.

Thank you all council members for your time.

Item 18
I strongly oppose this measure and I ask all city council members to vote NO on this measure.

Librarians and the American Library Association are trained professionals who have devoted their careers to selecting, maintaining, and curating reading materials for the libraries they maintain. To propose that the City Attorney and City Council Members should replace them as arbiters of the library materials purchased and made available to the public is in itself obscene. Allowing politicians and their appointees to censor and remove books and materials from the library is an abridgement of our most basic freedoms; it supresses the free exchange of ideas and knowledge; and at its worst is a tool to victimize and oppress minorities and marginalized communities.

Item 19
I strongly support this measure and I ask all city council members to vote YES on this measure. Huntington Beach should be a community that welcomes all regardless of their faith, race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Denouncing hate and hate groups is the most basic and necessary step the city council should take to make that clear to the people who live in and visit Huntington Beach.

Hello,
I am writing to you today about the agenda item number 18 for tonight's council meeting. The motion to restrict items must absolutely not pass. The restriction of knowledge and material is a direct attack on freedom, something that all Americans feel strongly about. What comes across as "obscene" to one person may very well not be to another. Please do not follow the examples of Florida. That is a recent example that is relevant to all citizens of this country, and it is an example as to why this cannot be allowed. The material restricted there proved that it was an indirect attack towards certain communities, and we absolutely cannot have that happening here. We must try to let knowledge remain unrestricted to those who seek it, even if some people get uncomfortable. If this were to pass, would it end there? Who is to determine the definition of "obscene". We cannot let the actions of a few so heavily impact and restrict the lives of many.

Following this, I feel it is fit to address the following item, 19. This feels like it should be a no brainer, though some will possibly provide resistance. Antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate cannot be tolerated. Hate towards any group, people or race is unacceptable and needs to be stopped. I hope all members would agree.

Thank you,

Subject: Pride Month Book Display
To Whom It May Concern:

It's been brought to my attention that the city council is voting tonight on agenda items related to the library and how they display books for children that contain mature topics such a sex, etc. My understanding is, per pride month, they have displayed recommended LBGTQ+ books but some of these books contain mature topics about sexual acts, etc.

I DO support Item 18 proposing these books are not displayed or easily available to children, but understand they won't be getting rid of them. I DO NOT support Item 19 proposing no regulations should be in place and these books are kept in the kids sections and available as are any other books.

Sincerely,

I denounce hate for everyone and this agenda item does not provide that. It singles out antisemitism, anti LGBTQ hate and white supremacy. It falls short of denouncing hate for all and is divisive. However, I don't see the value in passing an anti-hate item as everyone I know is against hate. The only ones that seem to use hate are progressives (that actually have regressive genes from drinking their own bathwater) when they have weak arguments that can't stand on their own merit. Like Ms. Moser tying some hate flyers to parents rejecting a sex grooming video in math class. I believe the hate flyers were printed by the very ones that claimed there is hate of the LGBTQ.

Where is the anti - Christian callout. I guarantee you if that math teacher at Edison High School showed a biblical video clip that talked about Jesus she would been suspended or worse. We are not stupid.

I don't hate LGBTQ people. I have gay and lesbian friends and they seem to live a happy life although its not for me. I do feel sorry for the transgender people just as I feel sorry for people with bulimia. They don't see the goodness in their bodies, instead they think they are too fat or have the wrong equipment. Just like the beautiful Karen Carpenter these people will die and sorrowful life if they don't get help.

Finally white supremacy. Should I feel guilty because I'm white? Should I give away everything I earned because of my race? This is a racist statement. I and my family reject your racist agenda item. My wife is half Korean but she declares herself Caucasian because she says her race shouldn't matter. None of my children ever used their ethnicity as an advantage so we walk the talk. My grandchildren are mixtures of Korean, Filipino, Persian and Mexican. Councilmembers that wrote this item what should I do to avoid white supremacy? Not vote for Biden or Newsom may be a start. lol

This is to show my support for Agenda in 18:

A) Direct the City Manager to work with the City Attorney to return to the City Council in August 2023 with a proposed Ordinance for the City's Libraries and other public facilities making obscene and/or pornographic materials, both in hard copy and digitally/electronically, unavailable to minors; with the City Attorney evaluating the materials
under the First Amendment. We should have in place new screening protocols for obscenity and/or pornography books/materials/content yet to be
acquired by the Library or other City facilities that are intended for children at our public facilities. The Ordinance should also present findings and authorities for "obscenity" within the meaning of the First Amendment.

B) I also ask that our City Manager to look into the process to part ways with the American Library Association asap.

Furthermore, I DO NOT support Agenda item 19, I'm very much opposed to this proposition.

Dear Members of the Huntington Beach City Council,
My name is Cynthia Benton. I am a long-time Huntington Beach resident and I vote.

Regarding item #18: I strongly urge you to vote "NO". It is not the place of an elected representative to censor books in our public libraries. If you worry that your child will be exposed to something that you find inappropriate, I urge you to be a responsible parent and supervise your child at the library. The residents of Huntington Beach are capable of monitoring and controlling what our children and grandchildren see at the library. What knowledge, training, and experience do you have to judge what is appropriate material to offer in a library? I also do not believe that our City Attorney should be making this judgment either. Finally, the idea that you would sever the relationship between the American Library Association, an organization whose mission is "To provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all." (Emphasis added), is absurd
Regarding item #19: I urge you to vote "YES". Anti-semitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hatred all seem to be on the rise and seem to be becoming more acceptable. I urge you as our elected representatives to denounce these things.

Thank you.

Let professional librarians and educators determine what is age appropriate.

Please do support item 19 on the agenda. The City Council needs to denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti- LGBTQ hate. The recent antisemitic flyers distributed in the city make it abundantly clear that the city has work to do to make itself an inclusive and welcoming place.

Truth does not change although times change. The truth about love has nothing to do with sex. Confusing these 2 leads only to division and hostility.

Dividing people for any reason, causing any group to feel superior to another, is a long practiced tactic of people/government to induce fear, hate, and violence.

This leads to the true statement: united we stand divided we fall! You can NOT legislate or demand morals in any society.

There is only ONE moral absolute that never changes and that is God!! This country was founded "under God"
It's time to stop living lies, and recognize that no matter what your "excuse" you ARE accountable! Protect our children. In Christ love I pray for all of us.

I stronglySUPPORT Agenda Item 18. Please don't allow our children to be exposed to materials that they are too young to understand.

I strongly OPPOSE Agenda Item 19. It is simply not needed.

Thanks for your time.

1. Please take all porn out of our libraries (especially children porn I thought all porn was illegal under 18)

2. Please vote diligently in love of goodness and not hate. It is NOT a hate crime to ask for what we want Peacefully. We are free to sleep with whomever and keep it between the sheets.(. Of course not with miners) it is normal to love and respect everyone's choice. I do not want to hear about other people sex lives or how they do it or with whom. • Moore, Tania

I support, Item 18, 23-532. I cannot believe we are even having to have this discussion. It is time to be responsible adults and protect our children. I am all for freedom of speech, but, lets use some common sense.

I am against item 19, 23-534. enough already. How many times do you have to denounce this subject. The mayor already made his statement for the city council. We need to move on.

Sincerely,
Luanne Shoup

I am in SUPPORT of Mayor pro temp item ITEM 18.

I strongly oppose item 19.

Not only do I oppose item 19 find it is offensive that race was brought into this at all. This is about sex and that should be between two consenting adults no mater what race or orientation. Put it in an adult only section. Where has common sense gone?

Hello City Council,
I am unable to attend the meeting tonight as I have young children to attend to. However I wanted to voice my support of agenda item 18 and opposition to Item 19. I think we need to protect our children from accidental exposure to anything sexual/pornographic/too mature without the support of their parent, their primary educators.

Sincerely,
Katherine Cotter

As a concerned citizen in Huntington Beach, I would like to express my serious concern for the rising hate in our city. There is no place in this country for white supremacy, anti-semitism, and hate against the LGBTQ+ community. It should not be supported to spread this kind of sickening message around our neighborhoods. It makes people of all races and religions feel unsafe and fearful. This city should be embracing love for one another and safety. We live in such a beautiful place. Let's not make it ugly.

I would also like to make it known that I am against this dangerous road of book banning in our city. It is the parents responsibility to monitor what their children are reading and watching. Government should not have a place in this issue. Again, parents should be in control, not the city.

Regards,
Karissa Blades

To: CITY COUNCIL (INCL. CMO STAFF) < [email protected]>; Strickland, Tony <[email protected]> Subject: June 20, 2023 CC Agenda Items 15, Oppose 18 and Support 19 Dear Mayor Strickland and City Council,
Item 15 - provides good information to you on the history of the Cameron Lane site currently used for a 174 bed Navigation Center.

We know that developing this site will take an array of funding sources and collaboration with various public agencies. The primary objective is to meet the housing needs of all the city's residents. Sometimes that housing need includes access to certain physical and mental health care services. We all know that the County of Orange is responsible for providing services, and funding, to meet the health care needs of all our residents. They try to do this through CalOptima and the County's Health Care Agency. So, by offering health care at that site, it will add additional levels of responsibility and collaboration. As you move forward and identify a direction on the development of this site you must also identify a site(s) for a temporary shelter while the Cameron site is developed to its permanent. The direction you give to staff on how to move forward is critical to this time-sensitive project. Please keep in mind that the current transitional shelters are at full capacity.

Item 18 - Oppose. Book banning is nothing new in this country, it is part of our DNA, yet court rulings have rejected them as unconstitutional.

Our parents have the awesome responsibility to educate their children. In our country they have the right to delegate this responsibility to schools, churches, and other organizations.

These organizations set up standards, policies and practices to carry out their duties. In our country there are ways for parents (and the community) to make their views known.

I am opposed to any government agency reviewing books and materials based on some criteria established by the City Attorney's office to determine whether a book may be displayed and purchased. This is censoring and there is no place for this activity in our Democracy. Oppose this item, quickly, please.

Item 19 - Support unanimously with the declaration that you each and as a governing body denounce antisemitism, white supremacy, and anti-LGBTQ hate.

As we get ready to celebrate the 4th of July, let's remember that our forebearers declared independence from a tyrannical dictator and oppressive government. Book banning is a form of tyranny no matter how you couch the language.

Thank you,
Patricia Goodman

The HBPD just announced the Culprut who placed the "Hate Fliers" in HB was just arrested, and he is from Norwalk, 1 guess that Shoots Down the Corrupt Threes talking point of all the "Hate Speech" in HB. And YES this was considered Free Speech Protected by our Constitutional Protections of the First Amendment, Too Bad for the Corrupt Three as the HBPD just blew their Talking Point to make HB Look Bad for Press Coverage to spread their 'Hate' on the Fab Four. What is it about Free Speech the Corrupt Three do not like? Because it does not fit their Policy of Misinformation and Lies for Media Attention. And what's odd is Norwalk is just 4 miles from Cerritos, get my drift? GCT who took to the Media Stage before most was aware of this. Oh, what a wicked web they driver, not from Huntington Beach, admitted to
throwing the flyers from his truck onto driveways.

The driver, a resident from Norwalk was also in
possession of over 500 additional flyers he intended
to distribute. This pickup truck matches the pickup
truck captured in video surveillance distributing
similar flyers near Edison High School on Tuesday,
June 13th.

The driver was issued a citation and his vehicle was
impounded. As upsetting and inappropriate as the
flyer content is, the dissemination of these materials
is protected under the First Amendment of the
United States Constitution as freedom of speech.
