Subject: Pull Agenda Item # 13 for More Studay
Dear Mayor Strickland, and City Council Members,
Agenda item # 13, needs further study.
On the surface it is a great idea to
encourage and foster business opportunities in our city and connect Community Development with this effort.
I believe that the City of
Huntington Beach is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
This is a
naturual relationship.
However, by purchasing the (unnecessary) executive
level membership, and offering concessions to the Chamber on rental fees and other event costs in the city, will show favoritim to the chamber at the cost of providing equal access to city services for other nonprofits in our city.
The Chamber
also has the unique status of supporting candidates for city council through an independent political action committee.
This relationship
muddies the waters further for those candidates with the Chamber's endorsement who win the election and then garner favors from this political contributor. I hope the council will recognize, not only the implied corruption, but the actual corruption this action entails. Please reconsider this action.
Finally, I invite you, the staff and your families to this Sunday's Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council Thanksgiving Gathering, 6 pm at Congregation B'nai Tzedek.
We have much to be grateful for.
Sincerely,
Pat Goodman

Mayor and City Council Members:
I request that you vote NO on the MOU with the HB Chamber of Commerce.
Why should the City provide the Chamber with names of businesses who have obtained business licenses and also provide Chamber brochures? It is not the business of City Staff to promote the Chamber, it is the Chamber's business to seek out members.
Additionally, why should the City provide in-kind benefits up to $9800 to the Chamber? Are all of the City Council members to be allocated access to the events for which the in-kind use of City facilities would be used for? I know that not more than a simple majority of the Council members can attend an event under the Brown Act. If however, access to these Chamber events would be available to any of the 7 members, and not only to the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem, then it may be acceptable to allow the use of City facilities at a reduced rate. If that is not how this would work, it seems as if this is just another avenue for campaign fund-raising.

Getting cozy with the Chamber of Commerce after increasing maximum political donations? Hmmm, something doesn’t smell right here.

This is Laura Sire, long time resident of HB. As your constituent I strongly urge you to give more time and consideration to Item #30 on Agenda dated Nov.7, 2023. Attachment Memorandum of Understanding is 30 pages long and definitely needs more study and consideration. It appears to favor the Chamber of Commerce over the City’s necessary non-profits and other organizations that serve many residents and their needs.
I strongly support our current City Manager Al Zelinka and the work he has done for Huntington Beach. He is a responsible, trustworthy leader and we need him.
Respectfully,
Laura Sire
