Attn: City Council
I’ve lived in Huntingon Beach since 1987 and raised my family here. One of the big attractions of this city was the wonderful children’s library, and we became frequent visitors. We were appalled at the recent actions of the city
council to restrict access to books that a faction of the council believed were inappropriate. My family has always supported the work of professional librarians to select what is right for the children’s library. We are vehemently opposed to a gang of amateurs segregating and stigmatizing books like the classic “Everybody Poops”.

Seriously?
Is this what we’ve come to? If parents don’t want their children to read “Everybody Poops” or books about puberty or kids with two dads, they should go to the library with their sons and daughters instead of making it more difficult for everyone else. It makes no sense for a narrow-minded minority to be making the rules for the rest of us.

Please reconsider your decision and return the operation of the library to the professional librarians.

Subject: FW: Ordinance No. 4318

Adding Ordinance # 4318 to Chapter 2.66 ( Community Parent – Guardian Review Board ) is a good idea that is probably long over-due. I believe that the only people that would oppose community review of library materials are those with a political agenda. With that said I do see one area of the ordinance that could lead to potential problems. It seems to me that item “E “of section 2.66.110 could allow a minority of members to delay review of materials until the prescribed review period expires, allow the materials to be automatically approved under the requirements of item “B “. Perhaps this should be looked into.

3/19 Agenda Item 24
Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem and Council members,
HB Voter and
Homeowner for 39 years
Here a few questions about Agenda Item 24
This board will ONLY be able to review the purchase of new books not the current collection? Children are identified as anyone under 18, not sure how many 13 to 17 year olds consider themselves to be children?
No books, even any science books, with the words, sex, breast, penis or vagina will be purchased?
No books with flirting , hand holding, hugging or kissing, even on hand, cheek or forehead will be purchased?
Books will only be reviewed 2 times each year so new books will only be purchased 2 times per year?
All decisions are final and unable to be appealed even after 10, 20, 30 years from now? Will the titles of rejected books be made available to the public? If the library becomes a private entity, will this community board continue to exist or will their recommendations even be followed by a private, for profit, company? CJ Ryder
