Good Afternoon Mayor and Members of the City Council:
The Huntington Beach Municipal Teamsters/ Teamsters Local 911, represents hundreds of loyal and dedicated City workers in the City of Huntington Beach; many of whom are residents of this beautiful City. A group of our members holds the distinction of proudly serving your constituency in various capacities in the public library system.
Sadly, after months of uncertainty and confusion we are now officially learning of plans to move toward the outsourcing or privatization of the public library system. The Huntington Beach Municipal Teamsters/Teamsters Local 911 firmly opposes this potential outsourcing or privatization.
The City of Huntington Beach has failed to provide the Union adequate notice and an opportunity to meet and confer prior to placing Item 22 on the agenda. In doing so, the City has silenced the voices of our members who have dedicated their careers to obtaining the education and experience necessary to provide stellar customer service to numerous visitors every day. With over 300 years of collective service, our members deserve to be treated with fairness and respect, not left riddled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future of their employment. What have they done wrong?
The City of Huntington Beach is going about this the wrong way and has failed the golden rule and the basic principles of a labor management relationship. We demand that you cease and desist any further movement regarding this matter until the Union and the City have met their legal obligations under the law.
We also implore the City Manager’s Office to follow up with applicable City staff regarding the request to meet and confer, and additional documentation, our organization requested on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
Please do not give away the crown jewel of Huntington Beach to a private for-profit company.
Respectfully Submitted,
Carlos I. Rubio
President
