Subject: Oppose Item 24-427 - Sadly, our city does is not fully committed to the protection of Freedom of Speech as guaranteed in the First Amendent
Date: Thursday, May 30, 2024 8:29:25 PM
Dear Mayor Pro Tem Burns:

Do you not see the hypocrisy? How can you declare we are a 1st Amendment friendly city, when you voted to create a politically appointed committee to pick and choose (without appeal) what books are available in our library.???? Your item is a farce. You can’t deny 1st Amendment rights in one meeting and then say you care about protecting the freedom of speech in another.

Sadly, based on recent council actions, I cannot say with confidence that our city is fully committed to the First Amendment.

Therefore, I Oppose: 24-427 Item Submitted by Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns - Affirmation of the Huntington Beach City Council’s Commitment to the United States Constitution and Special Recognition that Huntington Beach is a 1st and 2nd Amendment Friendly City The City of Huntington Beach City Council affirms and communicates our commitment and respect for the Constitution of the United States of America, and with special recognition that Huntington Beach is a 1st and 2nd Amendment friendly city.

I am writing regarding the upcoming agenda item to recognize Huntington Beach as a 2nd amendment friendly city. I am strongly opposed to this designation. As a mom of two elementary age children and an educator I fear for the message this sends to the community and the threat of gun violence it encourages. Huntington Beach has many wonderful features such as the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, beautiful coastline, and treasured public library. There is so much to celebrate in Huntington Beach but guns are not it. Please do not designate Huntington Beach as a 2nd amendment friendly city, gun violence is very serious and should not be treated in such a cavalier manner.

RE 24-427 Mr Burns and City Council
Why are you wasting everyone’s time dealing with issues over which you have no governing power? Our First and Second Amendments are established and will not change based on your recommendations. Wake up and focus on fixing our streets, maintaining city safety, and addressing the issues within your jurisdiction.

Stop acting as if you have more authority than you do. Your behavior is reminiscent of a wrestler who has suffered one too many concussions.

Instead of creating additional cultural conflicts, work on bringing this city together. Stop turning city meetings into a “Face the Nation” type show with your meaningless proposals.

Sincerely,
Andrew Einhorn 40-year HB resident

Dear Ms Estanislau,
Please add this to the public comments for the next cc meeting.

Today I read social media reactions to yesterday's verdict regarding our former president. "America's fully destroyed by democrats. Lock and load." "Time to start capping some leftys."
As councilman Burns submitted his proposal regarding the first and second amendments, councilman Kalmick submitted his proposal about water being wet and the sky being blue.

Well the sky is currently not blue, it is quite grey.

Both proposals fuel intense emotions.

Gentlemen, please withdraw your proposals.

Thank you.

Subject: Resolution on becoming a gun friendly sitting
Date: Friday, May 31, 2024 11:58:44 AM
Dear Council Members,
What is wrong with you people? Aren't you aware of the massive damage and tragedy caused by guns in our state and our country? Do you really want to declare our city a supporter of guns and gun violence?
Please, do your job and govern competently and fairly. Stop, spending time and money on measures that endanger people and reduce our opportunities for a good life.

Please stop!

Dear Mayor and City Council,

I feel that the proposed "Affirmation" of Agenda Item #21 is both gratuitous and self-serving, and is simply grandstanding by a Council member who is speaking only to his conservative base and is ignoring the rest of the community. Who determines the interpretation of the First and Second Amendments? Certainly the Council majority would have its own interpretations, especially on the Second Amendment, and is asking the citizenry to subscribe to whatever he deems the "friendly" designation to mean. This item, like so many before it which speaks only for its supporters and not for the general public, should be considered a political stunt that is unnecessary and frivolous. I would advise pulling this item. Is the Mayor Pro Tem that desperate for gratuitous glory as to foist this largely uncalled for "affirmation" on our citizenry? BTW, is the NRA coming to town any time soon?! Sincerely,
Tim Geddes
