SUPPORT OF PRIDE PROCLAMATION
a. Proclamation
LGBTQIA+ Pride Month
WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach cherishes the value and dignity of each person and appreciates the importance of equality and freedom; and
WHEREAS, all are welcome in the City of Imperial Beach to live, work, play, and every family, in any shape, deserves a place to call home where they are safe, happy, and supported by friends and neighbors; and WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach denounces prejudice and unfair discrimination based on age, gender identity, gender expression, race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical attributes as an affront to our fundamental principles; and WHEREAS, the term Pride emerged from the revolution stemming from the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City in 1969, which ignited the LGBTQIA+ movement; and WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach appreciates the cultural, civic, and economic contributions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual or Aromantic, and others (LGBTQIA+) community which strengthen our social welfare; and WHEREAS, it is imperative that young people in our community, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, feel valued, safe, empowered, and supported by their peers and community leaders; and WHEREAS, despite being marginalized, LGBTQIA+ people continue to celebrate authenticity, acceptance, and love; and
WHEREAS, the City of Imperial Beach stands united against those who threaten the safety of our LGBTQIA+ community members and unequivocally condemns any hate speech, hate violence, or any kind of aggression or discrimination against them; and
WHEREAS, City of Imperial Beach is proud to support, uplift the unheard voices and proclaim to our LGBTQIA+ community their right to exist, to be equal under the law, and to pursue happiness; and WHEREAS, numerous and diverse community groups, residents, and allies wish to engage in activities that support the understanding, uplifting, and affirmation of the LGBTQIA+ community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Serge Dedina, Mayor of the City of Imperial Beach, California, together with the City Council, take great pleasure in proclaiming June 2022 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in the City of Imperial Beach and declare that the raising and flying of the Pride flag is a symbolic act by the City of Imperial Beach intended to communicate the City’s support and affirmation of our LGBTQIA+ community.
