MEN’S MENTAL AND HEALTH WEEK
June 10th through June 16th
WHEREAS, men are less likely to have health care coverage, make fewer physician visits for preventative care, and are employed in more hazardous occupations such as mining, firefighting, and construction; and
WHEREAS, Men’s Mental Healthand Health Week is celebrated annually in June, to raise awareness about various health issues that disproportionately affect men and boys, including diabetes, heart disease, mental health conditions, and cancers such as prostate, testicular, and colon; and WHEREAS, mental health is essential to men’s overall health and well-being; and WHEREAS, mental illnesses are real and prevalent in our nation; and WHEREAS, prevention is an effective way to reduce the effects of mental illness. With early and effective treatment, those individuals with mental illness can recover and lead full, productive lives; and WHEREAS, green ribbons are used to support men’s mental health, and blue to raise awareness about the importance of male health and to encourage men to live longer and healthier lives; and WHEREAS, educating the public and healthcare providers about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and early detection of male health issues can help reduce mortality rates from these diseases; and WHEREAS, men who understand the benefits of preventive health care are more likely to participate in health screenings, thereby prolonging their lifespan; and WHEREAS, fathers who maintain a healthy lifestyle serve as positive role models for their children, promoting the well-being and happiness of their families; and WHEREAS, men’s mental and health is one of the most stigmatized issues. According to the Center for Disease and Prevention, 13.2% of men aged 18 and older are in fair or poor health; and WHEREAS, the American Psychologist Association reports that 30.6% of men have experienced depression in their lifetime, and their reluctance to seek care might worsen the issue; and WHEREAS, the citizens of this city are encouraged to increase awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and medical check-ups.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that I, Paloma Aguirre, Mayor of the City of Imperial Beach, together with the City Council, hereby proclaim June 10th through June 16th, as Men’s Mental and Health Week in the City of Imperial Beach. We encourage everyone to observe this week by promoting and participating in activities aimed at raising awareness, preventing illnesses, and improving overall health, with particular focus on men’s health.

Thank you for considering this proclamation and for raising the Pride flag at City Hall. With support for LGBTQ+ rights declining for the first time in years, the struggle for equality is not over. The Proclamation and flag are important to affirm our City's support and appreciation for our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors, particularly LGBTQ+ youth, and to denounce discrimination of all kinds. I hope you will approve it.
