Thank you for the opportunity to attend the State of the City Address. It was an informative and comprehensive summary of the many projects and services the City has delivered or currently has underway. What it wasn't, however, was an inspirational vision for the future.
The new format, with individual councilmembers reporting on activities in their districts, was interesting but made the event feel more like a council meeting than a State of the City address. A more effective approach would have been for the Mayor to present the accomplishments, challenges, priorities and unified vision for the entire city; and for councilmembers to additionally hold their own district town halls to engage in direct dialogue with their constituents.
More concerning was the Mayor's lack of urgency or detail regarding the sewage issue- the most serious challenge facing our community. Behind-the-scenes meetings and occasional breakfasts are no substitute for visible leadership and persistent public advocacy.
The Mayor stated that this Council likes to focus on issues on which you agree. While it is nice that our councilmembers work well together, good public policy and decision making are rarely the result of everyone agreeing from the start. They are the product of respectful debate, hearing differing viewpoints and, ultimately, compromise.
This "let's hold hands and sing Kumbaya" attitude toward governance may help explain why recent council meetings, including this one, often focus on relatively minor matters such as logos, banners, and signage. These types of "feelgood" initiatives have their place and can contribute to community pride, but they should not be the most significant issue at a council meeting. For residents dealing with high housing, gas, healthcare and food costs, toxic sewage odors, or fear of being separated through immigration enforcement, they offer little reassurance that their concerns are being heard, or confidence that government is focused on the issues that matter most. Perhaps that's why attendance and public participation is so low.
You often say that this Council is "punching above their weight." To me it doesn't feel like you're punching at all. The State of the City is over, but the fate of the City depends on getting into the ring and taking on the challenges that matter most.
