Councilmember Burrola stated his preference that the pole matches the finish of the water fountain.
Mayor Ortiz expressed his preference for approving design 2, though he liked the landscaping shown in design 1, and agreed that the digital sign finish and the fountain finish should match.
Mayor Ortiz also expressed his concern over the fountain’s colors fading over time, to which Director Chan advised that staff would work with the designer to ensure that proper chemicals are used in the fountain to minimize algae growth and that maintenance staff will be responsible for the upkeep of the fountain.
Mayor Pro Tem Ambriz spoke on his preference of avoiding native landscaping since he prefers flowery plants.
Councilmember Burrola concurred with approving design 2 and asked whether the fountain area would be reduced to make room for increased Library parking, to which Director Chan advised that the size of the area for the new fountain will remain the same as the existing fountain.
Mayor Pro Tem Ambriz suggested placing signs warning that the fountain water contains chemicals to discourage individuals from climbing into it.
Director Rodriguez advised that the new fountain would be maintained just like the existing fountain in the park plaza area. She noted that this existing fountain has signs warning individuals from entering the water.
A motion was made by Mayor Pro Tem Ambriz, seconded by Councilmember Burrola, to select design concept 2 with flowers / landscaping in the rear of the fountain. The motion was unanimously approved; Councilmembers Breceda and Garcia absent.
At 7:09 p.m., Councilmember Garcia and City Manager Miranda returned to the Council Chambers.
