SUBJECT: ADMINISTRATION OF THE OATH OF OFFICE
BACKGROUND
On January 27, 2026, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 26-03 calling for a General Municipal Election to be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, for the election of City Councilmembers representing Districts 1 and 2. The nomination period for candidates was February 9 through March 6, 2026.
FINDINGS
Only one resident, John Lewis, submitted nomination papers to qualify as a District 1 candidate and only one resident, Michelle Velasquez Bean, submitted nomination papers to qualify as a District 2 candidate. Pursuant to § 10229 of the Elections Code of the State of California, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 26-09 on March 17 appointing John Lewis as a Member of the City Council representing District 1 and Michelle Velasquez Bean as a Member of the City Council representing District 2 for four- year terms. Additionally, the election scheduled to be held on June 2 for Council Districts 1 and 2 were canceled.
Given that the terms of Councilmember John Lewis and Michelle Velasquez Bean are set to officially begin, it would be appropriate for the City Clerk to administer the Oath of Office to the Councilmembers.
RECOMMENDED ACTION
It is recommended the City Clerk administer the Oath of Office to Councilmember Michelle Velasquez Bean and Councilmember John Lewis.
