SUBJECT: APPROVAL FOR USE OF SPLASH! FOR THE LA MIRADAWHITTIER CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
RELAY FOR LIFE FUNDRAISING EVENT
BACKGROUND
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of La Mirada organizes walking events to raise awareness and funding for patient support programs, research, prevention, detection, and education in the hope of one day finding a cure for cancer. Relay for Life events are comprised of teams made up of friends and families touched by cancer. All the proceeds from this event are donated to the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life events have been hosted at the aquatics center since 2011.
FINDINGS
On March 29, 2026, the La Mirada-Whittier chapter of the American Cancer Society submitted a written request to host its Relay for Life fundraising event at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center. If approved, the event would take place on Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The American Cancer Society has also requested the following assistance from the City:
• The use of Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center, which would include deck space, the mat rider slide tower, aquaplay structure, spa changing room, and coaches’ room.
• The setup and use of the following equipment: projector, inflatable screen, podium, two-way radios, tables, chairs, umbrellas, sound system, portable heaters, canopies, tables, cabanas; and
• Waive all rental fees associated with the set-up, clean-up, staffing fees and use of the aquatics center for the purpose of carrying out the American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraising event. This request totals approximately $4,000 in staffing and supplies, and approximately $4,345 in facility rental fees.

2 RECOMMENDED ACTION
It is recommended the City Council:
1. Approve the request for use of Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraiser event; and
2. Waive all rental fees with the associated use.
