CONSENT CALENDAR City Council
August 25, 2026
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Jeff Boynton, City Manager
ORIGINATED BY: Micaela Diores, Department Secretary
SUBJECT: CITY COUNCIL REQUEST FOR CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE
BACKGROUND
Attending conferences provides an opportunity to keep updated on local government issues and regulations, encourages the exchange of ideas, and supports learning best municipal practices.
Pursuant to the City’s Conference and Workshop Policy (Administrative Policy 6-05), prior to attending a conference or workshop, a Councilmember is required to submit a Conference Attendance Request form identifying the conference name, location, dates, and costs to be considered. Upon returning from the conference, Councilmembers are to provide an oral report to the City Council on the information learned from the conference and the benefits to La Mirada.
FINDINGS
Mayor Anthony A. Otero submitted a Conference Attendance Request form to attend the Gateway Cities Council of Governments’ 2026 Conference and Retreat on Catalina Island from September 9 through 10. The estimated cost of lodging for one night and round-trip travel on the Catalina Express ferry is $426. This is Mayor Otero’s second request to attend a conference this Fiscal Year. He will also attend the League of California Cities’ Annual Conference and Expo from September 23 through 25.
Funds have been included in the Fiscal Year 2026-27 adopted budget, and these requests are in keeping with Administrative Policy 6-05 (Conference and Workshop Attendance). All requests for reimbursement are required to comply with Administrative Policy 4-08 (Expenditure Reimbursements).
RECOMMENDED ACTION
It is recommended the City Council approve Mayor Otero’s request to attend the Gateway Cities Council of Governments’ 2026 Conference and Retreat.
