23 OUR MISSION
Impacting generational change by empowering youth
who are facing the greatest obstacles through
relationships with professional mentors – 12+ years, no matter what. OUR STORY
Entrepreneur Duncan Campbell’s childhood provided the
impetus for founding Friends of the Children in 1993. We began with three salaried mentors (called Friends) serving 24 children in Portland. Today, Friends reaches thousands of children in over 550 schools in 43 locations across the country.

OUR VISION
Our vision is that one day, all children will have a longterm, consistent relationship with a caring adult who believes in them. We want to change the way the world
views and treats children facing the most significant
obstacles.

24 Our Community Demographics
 More than one-third of Coachella Valley children live in households with incomes at or below the federal poverty level, compared to 20% of children in Riverside County and 14% of all California children.  93% of students in the Coachella Valley Unified School District are socioeconomically disadvantaged.  Population demographics show 79.2% of Coachella Valley children ethnically identify as Hispanic or Latinx.  45% of the population in Coachella Valley speaks a language other than English in their homes; however, the percentages are higher in the Eastern Valley, with Coachella at 88.8%, Thermal at 92.0%, and Mecca at 98.3%.

COHORT ONE SCHOOL YEAR 2024-25

25 A Closer Look
Our Method: We select children who face multiple systemic obstacles. We amplify their voices as they write their own stories of hope and resilience.

Our Model: We commit to each child for the long term. 12+ years, no matter what. Each child is paired with a paid professional mentor called a Friend.

Our Outcomes: • 92% of youth go on to enroll in post-secondary education, serve our country, or enter the workforce
• 93% of youth remain free from juvenile justice system involvement • 98% of youth wait to parent until after their teen years Evidence-Based Practices
We have been recognized as an evidence-based program by the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare (CEBC) in 2020.

Independent researchers from ICF found parents supported by our 2Gen approach:࣯࣯  92% reported their Friend helped them to strengthen relationships with teachers & staff at their child’s school;ௗௗ  84% reported their Friend helped them reach goals they had for their child;ௗௗ  88% reported their Friend helped them understand/work with systems like education or child welfare;ௗௗௗ  86% reported their Friend helped them strengthen their family’s relationships with their community.ௗௗ

27 SEED FUNDING
18 couples and individuals contributed to
the $1.5M seed funding goal, and the
next steps are to enroll and serve cohorts
of 24 children and caregivers.

There is a great opportunity, momentum,
and interest to build towards annual
events where we bring together multichapter funders and network leaders and have a crossover in the Coachella Valley.
