SURFING CLASSIC
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council:
1. Adopt the Proclamation recognizing 70 Years of the Brooks Street Surfing Classic.
SUMMARY OF THE MATTER
This agenda item presents a Proclamation recognizing the 70th anniversary of the Brooks Street Surfing Classic, one of the longest-running surf contests in the world. The event, held in Laguna Beach, is a celebration of the City’s coastal culture, community, and history of surf heritage.
The action proposed is ceremonial and does not have a fiscal or environmental impact. Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the Proclamation to honor the event’s long-standing significance to the Laguna Beach community.
DISCUSSION
The Brooks Street Surfing Classic, founded in 1955, is a hallmark of Laguna Beach’s coastal identity and a cherished local tradition. Known for being a “locals-only” event, it brings together generations of surfers, families, and community members in celebration of the City’s surf culture.
The event is typically held when optimal wave conditions align, contributing to its unique character and spontaneity. The 70th anniversary marks a significant milestone, reflecting decades of community engagement, athleticism, and Laguna Beach’s close relationship with the ocean.
Adopting this Proclamation underscores the City’s commitment to honoring its cultural and recreational history and the people who have made this event possible.
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
The recommended action has no financial impact to the budget.
ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
This action is not subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to CEQA Guidelines Section 15378 because it does not constitute a “project” as defined in the CEQA statute. The recommended action is ceremonial in nature and will not result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment.
