Subject: Protecting Laguna’s Remaining Old-Growth Trees Dear Council Members,
In the past week, Laguna Beach has lost two old-growth trees, both on private property. I won’t be attending Tuesday’s meeting, but I want to state this plainly: the people of Laguna expect immediate, decisive action to protect the few remaining old-growth trees we have left.

There is no need to reiterate how important nature is in a town that is literally a biodiversity hotspot.

Our community and this Council have always cared deeply about the natural environment and the wildlife we share it with. What we need now is action, not speeches.

I urge the City to:
 Strengthen protections for old-growth and heritage trees, including those on private property.  Implement enforcement mechanisms that make these protections meaningful.  Launch a proactive citywide tree-planting initiative - trees in every viable location to stabilize slopes, support wildlife habitat, and enhance the beauty and well-being of our community.

Laguna’s trees are part of our identity. Losing them is not just unfortunate - it’s preventable. Please prioritize policies that safeguard what remains and rebuild what has been lost.

Best,
Josephine Torbensen
