Dear Ms. McKay,
Thank you for your prompt response. Given that I am out of town until February 15th and cannot meet with City Council Members, per you're suggestion, I have included with this communication the reasons I applied for traffic/parking committee position.
My first memories of Laguna Beach (LB) were of summer days spent on the beach and evening BBQ's at our family's cottage in the 60's and 70's. Having developed a love for this unique coastal location I chose to attend college at UC Irvine and to reside in LB while a student there from 1974 to 1978. After graduating college and medical school I chose to pursue my career in Orange County and built a home in North Laguna in 1983 where I have resided ever since. My wife and I saw our daughter grow through K-12 in LB schools. She's recently completed her PhD at UC Berkeley and in January, she and her husband have just made Laguna Beach their permanent home.
In 2024 I retired from my position as Medical Director for South Coast Emergency Medical Group where I had been a practitioner since 1983. During the latter 25 years of that timeframe I built a part time practice in medical-legal expert witness consulting work. That scope of work included innumerable deposition testimony and many courtroom encounters. Once my practice of Emergency Medicine ceased I also ended my medial-legal consulting work. Presently I continue serving as a Reserve Police Officer for the City of Orange where I have been working part-time since 2013 as tactical physician and SWAT team medic. I have given notice to Orange PD that at the end of 2026 l will retire from that position. The physical demands of that role are best served by a younger individual.
Having reduced my workload to nearly zero I still feel the need to in some manner give back to and make better the communities I have worked or resided in. Given my experience with trauma, traffic, patients, the legal system, governmental regulatory mechanics, lovely community of LB and how it has evolved (for the better or worse), I feel city committee work would provide me the means to continue to positively impact my hometown.
Finally, having directly experienced our community develop over the last 50 years while walking, running, riding, driving, shopping, and commuting, I have amassed a rich database for recognizing issues, assessing problems, and recognizing potential solutions with regards to traffic and parking.
Whats more I feel capable of being able to communicate this to city officials.
I respectfully request the members of the LB City Council allow me this opportunity.
George Baskevitch
