Subject: Agenda Items 14, 18, and 21-please support!
Dear Mayor Orgill and Councilmembers:
I am very happy to see proactive environmental initiatives before you, which have helped to temper my disappointment over the recommendation not to join the OCA at this time (agenda item 10).
14. Please support the resolution that encourages California to take action to reduce microplastics. The situation is dire.
18. Please support the pilot program using manual and mechanical rather than chemical means for vegetation management. This is a great step!
21. Please support the recommended infrastructure upgrades to speed along our transition to an electric fleet. I hope in the near future the city can also add charging stations for the public. Our city is surprisingly deficient in public charging opportunities.
Thank you for your consideration.
Best wishes,
Cathy

To preserve and enhance the unique village character of Laguna Beach Honorable Mark Orgill and City Council RE: DRB Efficiency Ordinance Village Laguna, Inc. supports two environmental actions being considered by Council August 4, 2026.
Item #14: Supporting statewide action to reduce microplastics. We support this action, given the recently reported studies on the alarming prevalence of microplastics. I recently walked main beach and picked up trash items and was astounded by the amount of plastic and Styrofoam items that get washed ashore with every wave. Successfully addressing this issue will require teamwork on the local, county and statewide levels.
Item #18: Supporting the expansion of herbicide-free vegetation management. We support expanding this effort in the Aliso Creek area and for that matter in all other areas. We understand the need to manage non-native, invasive species of plants. The use of Round-Up type herbicides are very effective in killing non-native species. These chemicals leech into the soil and harm or kill anything in its path for years, including people. To date, $10B in claims have been granted, with an additional $7B in claims in a proposed settlement against Round-Up manufacturers. Non- native invasive species can be effectively managed in other ways.
Thank you for your consideration and support for these environmental initiatives.
