SUBJECT: Regular Meeting Agenda Item No. 8.1.1. – Council Discussion Regarding Options for Formation of a New Public Safety Standing Committee Per a request by Council Member Sweeney, please see the attached handout for Regular Meeting Agenda Item No. 8.1.1.

Public safety committees can provide a forum for community members to voice their concerns and collaborate on solutions with city officials and law enforcement.

Committee members can draw on their expertise and knowledge to develop effective safety strategies and programs.

The committee can also serve as a liaison between the community and law enforcement, helping to build trust and foster stronger more positive relationships.

By bringing together a diverse group of members, the committee can ensure that safety initiatives are tailored to the specific needs and concerns of the community.

Public safety committees can also help to raise awareness about safety issues and promote education and preparedness among residents.

City of Laguna Hills
Public Safety Committee
Introduction by Councilman Sweeney
A Safe and Secure Laguna Hills is what I am proposing with the introduction of of this Committee.

We all want our community to be a safe and secure place to live, work, and raise a family. With the recent events in Nellie Gail we have seen an increase in burglaries and crime. In recent years we have seen an increase in other crime and safety concerns in our community. These are just a few of the reasons we need to work together to address these issues and keep our community safe.

Types of Safety Concerns in Laguna Hills
Laguna Hills is a beautiful city with many wonderful attributes. However, like any city, there are potential safety concerns that need to be addressed. Some of these concerns include:

1.) Property Crime: This includes theft, burglary, and vandalism. Property crimes can occur in any neighborhood, regardless of how safe it may seem.

2.) Personal Safety: This includes concerns such as assault, harassment, and other violent crimes.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their own community.

3.) Emergency Preparedness and Natural Disasters: It's extremely important to be prepared for emergencies such as mass shootings, power outages, severe weather and other events that could disrupt normal life. We are prone to earthquakes and wildfires which can cause significant damage to homes and property.

4.) Traffic Safety: Traffic safety is another important concern in Laguna Hills. The city's population has grown over the years, which has resulted in increased traffic congestion and accidents. It's important to address these concerns to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Benefits of a Public Safety Committee
Conclusion
Overall, a public safety committee is an essential component of a safe and secure community. By working together to identify risks, develop plans, and build relationships, the committee can help to ensure that Laguna Hills remains a vibrant and safe place to live, work, and raise a family.
