To: Honorable Mayor and Council Members
FROM: Justin J. Martin, Deputy City Manager
DATE: March 15, 2022
SUBJECT: City Sponsorship of Dana Hills High School Grad Nite 2022
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council approve a sponsorship donation of $2,500 to the Dana Hills High School Grad Nite Committee.
BACKGROUND
Traditionally, the City of Laguna Niguel has supported Grad Nite celebrations at both of its local high schools by donating $2,000 to $3,500 per year, per school. The City's contribution helps to keep the cost to the graduating students as low as possible and provides funding for those who cannot afford to attend. The event is intended to provide a safe and sober way for graduating students to celebrate their accomplishments.
ANALYSIS
This year the City received a donation request from the Dana Hills High School Grad Nite Committee for a monetary contribution of $2,500 to support their Grad Nite 2022 celebration. The donation request is included as Attachment A. The event is sponsored and planned by the parents and relies on the support of the cities the school serves, as well as the denerosity of community members and businesses. Every senior, regardless of ability to pay, is encouraged to attend Grad Nite to celebrate in a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment.
FISCAL REVIEW
Sufficient funding has been budgeted and is available in the FY 2021/2022 Operating Budget

Re: Dana Hills High School Grad Night
To the Honorable Mayor Elaine Gennawey:
Every year high school kids around the country celebrate their graduation. For many a celebration entails parties with alcohol and drugs. Dana Hills High School for many years has offered an alternative fun filled "sober" event for our graduates. The event is held offsite with kids bussed into an all-night, chaperoned event. This has been a highlight of the year for the graduates. Unfortunately, these events are funded entirely from the cost of a ticket and generous donations, since many of our kids are low income and cannot afford the price of a ticket.
My son William is a senior at Dana Hills High School, and I am part of a committee that is helping to fund the event so that all can participate. We have been successtul in getting many Laguna Niguel and Dana Point businesses to participate and donate. I am respectfully asking that the City of Laguna Niguel support this event with a monetary donation of $2500.! understand that we are late in the process and are aware of the deadlines in preparation for next year.
You can find us on Instagram "Danahillsgradnight". Thank you so very much for your consideration.
Respectfully,
Laura Muller
