Subject:Designating City Officials Authorized to File Application(s) to the Department of Justice to Obtain Financial Assistance
Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution No. 23-XX, designating those officials authorized to file the application (s) to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to obtain certain federal financial assistance.
Fiscal Impact:
None.
Background:
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) program furthers the DOJ’s mission by assisting state, local, and tribal jurisdictions’ efforts to prevent or reduce crime and violence and improve the justice system's fair administration.
Moreover, the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the criminal justice system, some of which could have environmental impacts.
The DOJ is committed to advancing bold, effective justice reform solutions that deliver safety, equity, and justice for all. Justice system reform includes but is not limited to, a wide range of investments in community safety and justice such as accountability of law enforcement to build community trust, alternatives to incarceration, community supervision reforms, support for mental health and substance use treatment services, community-driven programs and partnerships, and enhancing pretrial processes, efforts to continue to address the backlog of court cases created during the pandemic would fall in this category.
The City of Lancaster has been awarded the grant, the division of the Public Safety Department will receive total funds of $103,241.00.
