ITEM: RENAME THE MAYOR' SART SHOW AND SALE TO THE
JOYCE GATTO ART SHOW
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a Resolution to Rename the Mayor' s Art Show
and Sale to the Joyce Gatto Art Show
SUMMARY:
The Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale was founded by Joyce Gatto in 1994, as a way for local artists to display their works of art. As the Mayor' s Art Show and Sale founder
and chair for almost 30 years, Joyce Gatto was a true advocate for the arts. This staff report was prepared in response to Council direction on a referral considered at its June 3, 2024, Special City Council Meeting. This item allows the City Council to adopt a resolution to rename the Mayor' sArt Show and Sale to the Joyce Gatto Art Show in honor of Joyce' slegacy, passion, dedication, encouragement, and commitment to local artists within the community.
BACKGROUND:
An artist herself, Joyce Gatto had an appreciation for art and encouraged local artists to continue their work by coordinating with the City to provide a venue where artists can display their work. Every year, since 1994, Joyce, as chair of the Mayor' s Art
Show Committee, organized the Mayor' s Art Show and Sale as a way for artists to display and sell their art. Every year, art in various mediums is hung in the Council Chambers at City Hall for a two- week duration. An artist reception and awards ceremony conclude the event. Each year, the Mayor of Lathrop selects a work of art to be purchased and remain permanently on display at City Hall in the Joyce Gatto Gallery for everyone to enjoy. The continued appreciation of art extends into the community as sponsors and citizens are able to view and purchase the displayed art each year.
At the June 3, 2024, Special City Council Meeting, Council approved a referral renaming the Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale to the " Joyce Gatto Art Show" and directed staff to prepare a staff report for formal approval. Staff prepared this staff report and resolution renaming the Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale to the Joyce Gatto Art Show.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a Resolution renaming the Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale to the Joyce Gatto Art
Show.

RESOLUTION NO. 24-
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LATHROP TO RENAME
THE MAYOR' SART SHOW AND SALE TO THE JOYCE GATTO ART SHOW WHEREAS, the Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale was founded by Joyce Gatto in
1994, as a way for local artists to display their works of art; and WHEREAS, every year thereafter, Joyce, as Chair of the Mayor' s Art Show
Committee, organized the Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale as a way for artists to display
and sell their art; and
WHEREAS, art in various mediums is hung in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a two- week duration, and an artist reception and awards ceremony conclude the event; and
WHEREAS, each year, the City of Lathrop Mayor selects a piece of art to be purchased and remain permanently displayed at City Hall in the Joyce Gatto Gallery, for all to enjoy; and
WHEREAS, With Joyce Gatto' s
passing in 2023, Council desires to honor
Joyce' slegacy, passion, dedication, encouragement, and commitment to local artists within the community, by continuing to organize and operate the Art Show and Sale and directed staff to prepare this resolution for consideration; and WHEREAS, at the June 3, 2024, Special City Council Meeting, Council approved a referral renaming the Mayor' s
Art Show and Sale to the Joyce Gatto Art
Show; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Lathrop does hereby rename the Mayor' s Art Show and Sale to the Joyce Gatto Art Show.
The foregoing resolution was passed and adopted this 10th day of June, 2024, by the following vote of the City Council, to wit:
