33 Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
I have been in Cub and Boy Scouts for 8 years and have volunteered for many projects and activities in our community. I have also volunteered as a teacher's assistant for a non-profit educational organization for the past 2 years, during the weekends. At school, I have been part of the National Honors Society for a year, which is also a community service-based organization, serving the TriValley area.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
A major youth issue that requires more attention recently has been mental health. At school and outside of school, I witness teens go through various mental health issues, ranging from peer pressure, stress at school, lack of support at home, and online/offline bullying. I have found that the schools and our communities do not have enough resources to address these problems. Youth should have more access to help when they require it, enabling them to do better at school, succeed in life and find confidence in themselves. This would make a great change to our society and create stronger future citizens.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I would involve other young people in the activities and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission by asking people to help out or participate in events. My boy scout troop is constantly looking for service projects in and around the Tri-Valley area. I would recruit our younger scouts for these activities, thereby spreading awareness from a young age.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission If you have participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activities, please describe your involvement:
Unfortunately, I have not participated in any of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission activities.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What experience, if any, have you had with other youth activities in Livermore? Boy Scout - Troop 931 and 154 - 8 years and continuing - Weekly projects like city cleanup, volunteering at local events, helping shelters, food bank help, fundraising, etc. California Tamil Academy - a nonprofit organization - 2 years and contin8ug - TEacher's assistant, helping students ages 8-13 2 hours a week with learning my culture and language. National Honors Society - 1 year and continuing - Local community service projects like school beautification, volunteering at Kids Against Hunger organization.

37 Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
Currently, I am a volunteer for the Livermore Police Department Explorer program. I have been with the Explorer program for 2 years. In my Sophomore year of high school, I served as an officer (Historian) for the National Honor Society club at our school, 1 school year was the term. In my Freshman year of high school, I served as class president for our Leadership club 1 school year was the term. In each of these roles, I have demonstrated dependability, reliability, leadership skills, a willingness to assist my community and to serve as a positive role model for our community.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I know that there is a need for teen mental health assistance. Right now if a teen is troubled they have to go to their parents and their parents have to find a counselor through their insurance, this can take some time, and meanwhile, the troubled teen is having to wait. I would love to work on a committee that can come up with some resources that can provide instant support, even if just for a short period. I really love my community and I am here to serve so if there are issues at hand I would love the opportunity to assist with problem solving.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
Most young adults would be willing to help in any way possible especially if it is for their community but they just don't know where to start. I would involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission through Social Media, through the use of the school's "volunteer" page. Granada High School has one but I'm not sure about Livermore High School. I don't see a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission page on Instagram so I would start there too.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission If you have participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activities, please describe your involvement:
I have not participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activity.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What experience, if any, have you had with other youth activities in Livermore? I have 2 years of volunteer experience through Granada High School and through activities outside of school. I have strong leadership experience, fundraising, and marketing experience to name a few. I am great at working with my peers and learning from adults that take the time to mentor young people. I welcome the opportunity to throw on my cape and sore to new heights. No job is too big or too small.

Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
This is my first time requesting to participate in community service. In the past, I have attended several community events such as the LARPD Ranger Program, the Livermore Library Reading Program, etc.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I do not have major issues, but I would be interested to know how the youth program functions, majorly impacts the community, and how to provide a diverse activities or events to the youths of Livermore.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
In my opinion the library brings the community together by catering to different ages. Posting flyers in the library, would spark interest in all age categories depending where they are posted. As well, I can involve young people through word of mouth, such as talking about it to friends at school and other activities I participate in.

I have not participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activities.

50 Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
I have been an intern for Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert since June 2022, where I work on various tasks assigned to me. My current project involves designing and distributing pamphlets for the SLEB (Small, Local, Emerging Business) program. I will distribute these pamphlets to multiple small businesses around Livermore, as well as the rest of the Tri-Valley area in the future. I will also hold a town hall meeting in the fall with Supervisor David Haubert so that we can inform small businesses about the financial resources that are available to them. A project I recently worked on involved researching information in relation to Light Pollution Ordinances and how Alameda County should go about when implementing one. Starting last September (2021), I took weekly visits to the Correctional Training Facility which is a prison located in Soledad, CA. Along with UC Santa Cruz students and two professors, I conversed with inmates that are on the path of rehabilitation. I will be continuing this again in the fall and winter this year. Last summer I was a tutor for LVJUSD's summer school program and this year I am working at the Robert Livermore Aquatics Center as a Recreation Leader.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
The greatest issue of interest for me is reaching diversity as a way representing every youth in Livermore, regardless of background. I believe we can achieve this by having guest speakers during each Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission meetings that can give a short presentation about their heritage. There are numerous cultural associations/non-profit organizations around Livermore that are always willing to give talks. Perhaps there can be an interactive activity for the public (youth) that goes along with learning about their heritage; I feel that this would make a presentation more exciting.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I would utilize my encouraging and optimistic personality to promote the activities of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission. One way of encouraging youth that I believe would work would involve going to the public libraries around town and creating a stand to inform people about an activity. I would present it in an exciting way that would make them want to engage in the activity. The Civic Center Library would especially be a good place to promote something because there is an entire teen section for literature located there, therefore I could set up a stand there (if permitted) and we could gain attraction from people of the desired age range. I think another way in which I can involve my fellow youth is by placing flyers around town. For example by I know that by Lizzie Fountain there is a cork board with flyers for all sorts of public events. We could perhaps place flyers there!
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission If you have participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activities, please describe your involvement:

Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What experience, if any, have you had with other youth activities in Livermore? I am a teen volunteer at Kids Against Hunger, which is a non-profit organization that hosts events where numerous groups (mostly youth) pack food specifically for countries/cities all across the globe who are in need of nutritious meals. I am in charge of overseeing the food packaging as well as putting the packaged food into shipping boxes. I have been participating in events since December 2021 and have attended over 15 events (~50 hours). I hope to double that number by the end of the year.

Subject: LAYAC appointment for Alexa Sumitra
Date: Monday, August 15, 2022 3:13:01 PM
Ms. Elam and Ms. Weber,
This is Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert contacting you in regards to the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission (LAYAC). I have been informed by my director of interns that Alexa Sumitra will have an interview soon for a spot on the commission.
I would personally like to endorse Alexa as she has been a hard-working, avid intern for me since June. She would be a great
asset to the commission as displayed by her current intern project (designing and distributing informational pamphlets on our county SLEB business program) which I am sure she will tell you more about during her interview.
Please do not hesitate to contact me directly with any questions. My cell phone number is Best Regards,
David

Issues that I see are that middle school and high school kids do not have enough places to hang out. This could lead kids getting into trouble. Maybe help the mental health of middle schoolers and high schoolers.
Having kids do art to showcase around our city. I also hear that kids are made fun of/put down for sexuality, even if they are not part of the LGBTQ+ community. With the group, we could find ways to make these happen or help change things, like speak to leaders and gather ideas from kids. Also find out how we can support those that get made fun of.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I would speak with my Leadership Class at Christensen. I can speak at Faith Formation at church. I can hang out downtown and speak to kids. We can call a town meeting. Maybe have presentations at the schools to make everyone aware and accepting of others' differences, including everyone (disabilities, racial backgrounds, sexuality, etc.)

70 Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
Though I have lived in different places, I have found that being engaged through civic participation is a great way to know your local community and contribute to improving it. I am involved in my school’s California Scholarship Federation (CSF) club and fill my hours mostly through volunteering online for the Smithsonian Transcription Center and the City of San Ramon. When volunteering for Smithsonian, I transcribe handwritten records from the past. Doing this has helped me appreciate the past and its connection to our modern-day lives. I also volunteered for the City of San Ramon when I lived there the past year. I assisted in park cleanups and the San Ramon Art & Wind Festival.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I recently moved to Livermore and can tell it is a diverse community where people rely on the principle of caring for one another. In Livermore, I cannot sense much disunity among residents. I feel that it is essential we preserve this for our residents and youth. I believe city government has a crucial role in maintaining a unified community. Through community activities that are promoted, designed, and accessible to and for everyone, we will continue to have a thriving sense of community. I believe our generation of teenagers will be byproducts of the environments we are raised in. If Livermore is a place where differences are tolerated and residents work together, our youth will go on to make a positive footprint on the world. For these reasons, the issue I am most interested in is making community-based activities for teenagers more visible, accessible, and unifying. When was the last time a group of vastly differing high schoolers gathered through community-based efforts and were able to see they had way more similarities than differences? I believe that is the power the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission has. LAYAC must unite a diverse body of youth with seemingly different lives and views through community activities. We must better promote participation in our community so, we, teenagers today, will become adults unified through our differences tomorrow. In a country facing extreme political polarization, the unity of today’s youth is at the forefront of our future. It all begins with us.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I believe fostering teen engagement takes the teamwork of many people. If I were on LAYAC, I would involve other young people in our work by listening to and inputting their opinions into programs. Due to the diversity of Livermore, everyone on an advisory board has a unique opinion. I would help combine these opinions to make adequate plans. Additionally, I have experience promoting activities to my peers.
An example is my participation in the Environmental Club and organizing the Earth Day Celebration. I worked with other club members to encourage attendance at the annual Earth Day celebration by designing posters, flyers, and spreading the word to other students. Since I go to a school outside Livermore, I also have the opportunity to promote LAYAC activities to families in nearby areas and attract a larger attendance for events.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission If you have participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activities, please describe your involvement:
As someone new to Livermore, I have not participated in the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission activities. However, I have lived in different parts of the United States and can give a unique perspective on those activities based on my experiences.

76 Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
Through my participation in the National Honor Society and Girl Scouts, I've had many community service opportunities. I've volunteered and supported school fundraisers for Jackson Avenue Elementary School, East Avenue Middle School, and Livermore High School. I've completed my Girl Scouts Silver Award to teach the importance of oral hygiene for Tri-Valley Haven's local shelters. I'm now focused on my Girl Scout Gold Award and have completed my Journey for "Sow What". This included volunteering at Fertile Groundworks and learning about food sustainability.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I want to help children be prepared for school by giving them access to the school supplies they need. We could hold donations drives throughout the year and reach out to local schools and churches to distribute all the supplies. We also could work with schools to find out what supplies are most needed. In addition, I'd like to raise awareness that audiobooks are available through Livermore Public Libraries. This can help students who have reading disabilities or trouble focusing. They are also a good resource for those with vision impairments or other disabilities.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
The Commission could reach out to groups like Girl/Boy Scouts, NCL, and YMSL who are willing to volunteer to help put on community activities and events for all ages. Additionally, a commissioner would be assigned to a school to attend PTO meetings and establish better communication. This would be a good way to promote community events based on the students.

Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What experience, if any, have you had with other youth activities in Livermore? I've been in Girl Scouts since 2014 and have participated in the camps at Del Valle and the activities hosted around Livermore. I've volunteered at Jackson Ave.'s Spring Fundraiser multiple times which includes running carnival stations. In 2021, I welcomed a group of 15 freshmen during their orientation to help them feel comfortable at their new school. While working with LARPD I help prepare ESS groups to enter the RLCC pool.

Community Service ( cleaning, serving food, queue management and distributing pamphlets ) at local temple - five years.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
Involve youth more into the various community projects - like, during pandemic, I helped my sister to collect produce from our neighbor's backyards and donate to various charities. Youth can make better impression when we advocate some change. Youth can bring lot of innovative ideas and also will have lot of energy to look at various problems in a unique way.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I think better communication is needed. As my sister is a youth commissioner, I know a little bit on what is being discussed. Other than that I have no idea that there is a youth advisory commission and kids have a say in it. Communicate the opportunity to shape the very city that we live in to schools in a better way will be one important step. I would take help from various principals of schools to spread the word. Also, community events like farmers market are better places to spread the word.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission If you have participated in a Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission committee or activities, please describe your involvement:
I have never participated in any of the activities as I am just thirteen years old. But I hear a lot through my elder sister who was Youth Commissioner and motivated by what she explained.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What experience, if any, have you had with other youth activities in Livermore? I have attended quest science center programs, techtrek - women in stem - program; I have been to Young Toast Masters club organized by Livermore Hindu Temple. I am also active basketball player from my school.

86 Summarize your participation in civic or community activities, including years of service.
Despite lacking prior experience in civic and community activities, I am dedicated to becoming a member of the Granada High School Human Rights Club in the upcoming 2022–2023 school year, a school group focused on civic altruism and activism. This will grant me my first experience in community service.
Alternatively, towards the beginning of middle school, I drafted a non-profit organization focused on donating non-perishable soup cans to food drives. The project unfortunately never came to fruition due to a lack of resources.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission What issues are of greatest interest to you and how would you see them addressed by Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
I am primarily interested in highlighting the cultural diversity of Livermore, something that Livermore has taken fantastic steps towards in previous years, as well as having Livermore's youth better integrated into the community, which I know the Public Library has taken steps towards improving. I have observed in both myself and others an underlying sentiment of disconnect from the Livermore community.
Question applies to Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission How would you involve other young people in the work, activities, and programs of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission?
There are simple ways to promote active contribution to the community from youth in Livermore without having them be part of the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Commission. Using the city's social media platforms wisely can be especially beneficial in reaching a target demographic. Creating a small social media campaign for the city of Livermore is one potential way of hearing directly from the community and spreading messages. As highlighted by Nathan Brumley of the Livermore Public Library in a recent meeting, a social media campaign "#LPLSummer22" plays a role in our library's summer reading program.
Having previously dabbled in social media promotion opens many new opportunities for wider campaigns; though, one of the most important principles to follow as a member of the commission should be to hear out all sorts of youth in Livermore. Simply communicating is sometimes one of the best ways to get people to start paying attention.
