Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly explain your interest in serving on the Advisory Body(s) you have selected. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I hope to contribute meaningfully to the conversation around strengthening and promoting the arts in Livermore. I have a particular interest in the performing arts: music, theater and dance.

Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly describe your interpretation of the purpose of this Advisory Body. To learn more you may visit the website found here: https://www.livermoreca.gov/departments/city-clerk/city- council-meeting-calendar-agendas, then click the link on the left had side and chose the Advisory Body you are interested in (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
The Commission for the Arts can establish priorities for the way that the city can support public engagement with the arts. Supporting artists and programs that foster the arts can enrich the quality of life for Livermore residents.

Question applies to multiple boards
Review the City Council's Goals and Priorities for Fiscal Years 2021-23 (You may review them here: https://www.livermoreca.gov/government/city-council/goals-priorities) Briefly describe how you anticipate this Advisory Body will assist the City Council in implementing the Goals and Priorities. (If you are applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
The physical enhancement of the downtown is meant to ensure "the right balance of local amenities to support quality of life." By supporting the visual and performing arts, the Commission will increase the vibrancy of the downtown area, which is the purpose behind the improvements that are being made.

21 Question applies to Commission for the Arts
The Commission meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 4:30 PM, and each meeting typically lasts two hours. Additionaly, Commissioners are expected to serve on one or more subcommittees and attend various programs and tours. Do you have any committments that would keep you from participating fully in the activities of the Commission? If so, how would you balance the two?
Attending Commission meetings should not be a problem for me. I do have professional responsibilities to the congregation I serve as rabbi. These often occur on evenings and weekends.

Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly describe your expectations of this Advisory Body's accomplishments or outcomes. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I share the values articulated in the recently adopted Creative Livermore Framework. I am particularly concerned that Livermore have adequate arts spaces and programs to stimulate and fulfill interest in the arts among students. I also hope to strengthen Livermore's position as a destination for the arts and increase the number of visitors from outside the city.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
Describe your expectations and anticipated contributions as a member of the Commission for the Arts.

I have an appreciation for cultural diversity in the arts, and familiarity with some of the technical requirements in the public presentation of the performing arts. I hope to be a responsible steward of the city's resources, while encouraging investment in significant, long-term projects that will build communities of artists and audiences.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
Describe your experience in the area of arts or other background (educational, business, or professional) that might be useful to you as a member of the Commission for the Arts.

I am a guitarist, and music is a major component of my work as a rabbi. I lead singing in worship, direct a volunteer choir, and compose Jewish liturgical music. In addition, I play traditional Irish music with local musicians. Equally important is my professional experience as a rabbi. I am familiar with board process and non-profit decision-making, as well as non-profit budgets and finances.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
What challenges do you see facing art (in terms of public access to, public support, or social value)?
Community events bring out families. Festivals and free outdoor events make it easy for families to explore the arts and meet artists. Strengthening these events should be a priority, and that will require increased investment.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
Do you foresee any conflict of interest in serving on the Commission? If so, explain below.

I do not foresee any conflict of interest.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
Selecting an artist is the most important part of the public art process. What procedure is likely to produce the best result?
The Commission should always begin by answering the question, "Why?" What is the reason for a piece of art at a particular place or time? Beyond the goals, the Commission should have input from those who can shed light on what makes for artistic excellence in a particular medium. In addition, the Commission should agree at the outset which criteria are relevant, e.g. the artist's portfolio? published critical review? the artist's statement relative to the project?
What else would you like the City Council to know about you? If you would like to provide additional information (resume, personal website, etc.) please use the Upload Resume button.

Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly explain your interest in serving on the Advisory Body(s) you have selected. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I am applying for Livermore’s Commission for the Arts Advisory Body to ensure Livermore’s continued support for local artists, art exhibitions, and art activities for its residents.

I believe the purpose of the Advisory Body is to provide community input, feedback, and assistance to help the City meet its goals. Art is much more than the City installing a sculpture or displaying a painting.

What value does art bring to Livermore? A city that celebrates and embraces the arts has the feel of being a welcoming and engaging city. Downtown is not only a place to gather, but a place of wonder and amusement as visitors see outdoor art in unexpected places. A city that embraces an artist’s self- expression is a city that values diversity and independent thinking. From a financial perspective, it also says that a city that spends money on art is a city that has the money to support its citizens’ essential needs; it’s a great place to live and raise a family.

(If you are applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
After reviewing Livermore's 5-year strategic plan, the Commission for the Arts Advisory Body can assist the City by 1) reviewing and selecting art project proposals to fund, 2) identifying potential artists for commissioned artwork, 3) providing community outreach to inform/educate residents of art –related projects/activities and keep residents engaged in City goals, 4) provide feedback to City Staff to ensure all projects are inclusive, diverse, and reflect the needs of residents and fits the image of Livermore.

I have no conflicts with the duties required.

Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly describe your expectations of this Advisory Body's accomplishments or outcomes. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I expect the Advisory Body to have 1) open communications and good working relationships with City Staff, 2) work closely with key community members, 3) be open to hearing diverse voices and opinions, 4) actively participate in community activities and projects, and 4) continually work toward achieving our City's goals.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
Describe your expectations and anticipated contributions as a member of the Commission for the Arts.

I am the voice of a typical Livermore citizen that is not an artist, but values and appreciates art in my life. I moved to Livermore 20 years ago and witnessed the city mature into the vibrant city of today. Over the years I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the performing arts and the Rae Dorough speaker series at the Bankhead, I love the outdoor sculptures, murals, and art festivals, the art exhibits in the civic center library, Carnegie Library, the Bankhead Theater, and Bothwell Art Center. I expect the Commission to be fair in their evaluation and selection of artists for commissioned artwork, and provide citizens with equal access to art education, activities, and exhibitions. The Commission should work toward providing a platform for a variety of art forms that appeal to all ages, ethnic backgrounds, education, and interest that will enrich the life of a Livermorian. My professional experience that can contribute to the success of the Commission are building cohesive teams, leading and working in teams, performing a cost-benefit analysis, creating and tracking budgets for projects, managing projects, writing and evaluating proposals, listening and learning from different opinions, hiring workers, and talking to community members.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
Describe your experience in the area of arts or other background (educational, business, or professional) that might be useful to you as a member of the Commission for the Arts.

I love the creative process and have tapped into my creative self for diverse projects. As a research scientist, I have spent my career on the cutting edge of discovery which takes being open-minded, thinking outside the box to solve problems and trying to find answers to questions, and seeing the potential and possibilities in new discoveries. Later in my career, I wrote and designed advertisements for trade journals and designed product packaging. As a retiree, my creative outlets have expanded to include online drawing and painting classes, and I co-founded a local crochet/knitting club that donates baby blankets to Contra Costa County Hospital to support their baby layette program. Last year we donated over 400 blankets. I also enjoy wildlife photography.

Question applies to Commission for the Arts
What challenges do you see facing art (in terms of public access to, public support, or social value)?
Art tends to be underfunded and underappreciated because the benefits are not always immediate or obvious. The most familiar effect of art can be felt like hearing music that brings back memories, looking at a painting or listening to a speaker may make you question your beliefs or values. But the long term benefit of art is much more profound. Participating in art helps foster creativity in people; creativity can lead to looking at things with a new, fresh perspective, which can lead to new discoveries like cures for diseases, traveling to other planets, solving world hunger.

Interests & Experiences
Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly explain your interest in serving on the Advisory Body(s) you have selected. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I am a recently retired lifelong patron of public libraries who is interested in doing all that I can to promote and sustain Livermore's excellent Library program. I currently volunteer as a tutor with the library's Literacy Program and regularly attend the Spanish Language Conversation Group. I have nonprofit organization board experience, as I am currently serving as the Program Chair of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society.

I believe that the board's goal is to provide steerage and guidance to the library to insure that it remains a valuable resource to the community and an asset to the city. The world has evolved a great deal in my lifetime and I believes that libraries must also evolve in order to remain relevant. Activities such as the recent Opportunities Expo, the Literacy Program, involvement with Veterans Affairs Outreach, and the art exhibition by artists of color during Black History Month are good examples of activities that the library is and should be promoting.

If appointed, my goals and priorities would be to insure that the City Council remains cognizant of the valuable resources provided by the library and to make sure that the council maintains its support of the programs that the library provides.

Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your expectations and anticipated contributions as a member of this Advisory Body. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I am a lifelong patron of public libraries who understands the value that literacy provides to society in general and Livermore in particular. I am also a Vietnam Era veteran who read to his daughters every night for over 15 years. Bottom line: I believe that literacy and knowledge are the cornerstones of a stable society and that the library is the institution that provides that to everyone without regard to their wealth or social status. I am volunteering so that I can help maintain the library as the vital civic institution that it is.

Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly describe your expectations of this Advisory Body's accomplishments or outcomes. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I expect that the Library Board of Trustees will continue to support and promote the library's vital mission to the community.

Briefly explain your interest in serving on the Advisory Body(s) you have selected. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
The Library, with all its branches (including the online resources) is the heart and soul of Livermore, the place where all are welcome, whatever their needs, . It is the communal space that welcomes everyone. It is the place that facilitates informal and individual learning. This has always been its mission, and, with the implementation of Equity and Inclusion's goals, has become the place where much of the work of cultural inclusion takes place. The Library's goals dovetail with my overarching goals of building community and strengthening our diversity. Being part of the Library Board, as it supports the City goals for the Library and their implementation would be a great pleasure and honor.

The library board has a hefty set of responsibilities, from advising on financial priorities and resulting budget to advocating in the community for the library's programming and goals, to understanding applicable laws. Choices about where programming takes place, who is served and by what means, and the scope of the programming all matter for facilitating learning, enjoyment, and the diversity of community. The annual report reflects this scope, particularly regarding the long term goals, short-term responses to COVID, and increasing equity and inclusion.

I've referred to the recent Five-Year Strategic Plan for this question. There are three areas that are the Library's responsibility: literacy, updating information access, and increasing equity and inclusion in many ways. This dovetails with the Library Board of Trustees' responsibilities as described above: increasing Livermore residents' engagement with the library for personal growth and community building while keeping finances in mind.

Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your expectations and anticipated contributions as a member of this Advisory Body. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I and my family have personally benefited from the Library for decades. However, beyond my personal love for the library, I believe that libraries in general and Livermore Library specifically are places were people are met as they are so that learning, enjoyment, and community grow. My experience in the community, including as Councilmember working on Equity and Inclusion, gives me the experience to support the Library in the future.

Briefly describe your expectations of this Advisory Body's accomplishments or outcomes. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
Sorry, this question is confusing. I expect the Library to continue its work as described in the annual report and appreciate the goals outlined in the Five-Year plan. Should I be selected, I would enthusiasticelly support these goals.

Interests & Experiences
Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly explain your interest in serving on the Advisory Body(s) you have selected. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I am interested in serving on the library board because I want to get involved in my community. My family recently bought a home in Livermore because of this we plan to set roots in Livermore and we will be part of this community for many years. As a family that uses the library's services often, I want to better understand the library's role in the city because I know they do much more than just let people borrow books. I want to participate in making the decisions of how the library runs including: determining budget, providing feedback on programming, responding to community input (and challenges), part-take in the library staff hires, improve and/or help create library policies, and to help ensure that the library’s mission is being accomplished. I also want to learn how a board operates. Participating in the library board will give me the first hand experience that I need.

Question applies to multiple boards

My interpretation of the advisory board is that they are the liaison between the library and the community.

They are the advocates for the library to ensure that their mission is being upheld. At the same time are the ones who are able to provide feedback to the libraries, so that the communities needs are being met.

The board can assist with the City’s goals and priorities in two ways. First, as the city looks into the future or the next 25 years it's important that the library also be prepared. The board can work with the city, to make sure it provides services that are diverse and inclusive for the growing population we will face. As the city's main priority is addressing homelessness and housing, the board can help with the city in organizing programming, events or other services that can help this population. They can also provide events and/or forums to help the public better understand the issues.

Question applies to multiple boards
Describe your expectations and anticipated contributions as a member of this Advisory Body. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I feel that my eagerness to learn, and my passion for the library's success are good contributing factors to becoming a good board member. In addition, as a current homeschooler mother and previous educator, I feel that I am part of different communities that I would like the library to have a stronger relationship with.

I can not only help with providing feedback on how the libraries operate but I can also help create bridges between the libraries and different communities in the city.

Question applies to multiple boards
Briefly describe your expectations of this Advisory Body's accomplishments or outcomes. (If applying for more than one Advisory Body, please include a response for each Advisory Body.)
I expect the board to continue to give guidance so that they are able to provide great programming, establish good relationships with the community and most of all they are able to service all the residents of Livermore.
