It's time for a change. When measuring lead air pollution, Livermore Airport ( LVK) ranks the 28th worst out of more than 5,000 municipal airports across the country. On October 18th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued an endangerment finding under section 231 (a) of the Clean Air Act that "lead emissions from aircraft engines that operate on leaded fuel endanger public health and welfare".

The majority of aircraft using Livermore Airport are piston engine aircraft which operate on leaded fuel. These are typically small aircraft that carry 2-10 passengers. The EPA states "Piston engine aircraft are the single largest source of lead emissions to the air in the US, contributing 70% of the lead entering the air annually. Protecting children's health and reducing lead exposure are two of EPA's top priorities.

What can be done to eliminate this health hazard? Last week, the Sierra Club submitted a letter urging the Livermore City Council to separate and fast track the Fixed Base Operator's proposal for additional fuel tanks to sell UL 100 for small piston aircraft. Mayor Marchand said that the airport discovered an available storage tank that could be used for the sale of unleaded fuel at LVK. The council voted 4-0 to update minimal airport standards including the sale of unleaded fuel at the next city council meeting.

The Sierra Club, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), Earthjustice, Lead- Free Livermore, and Livermore Airport Citizen's Group all view lead air pollution from aircraft as an urgent health issue. For the the health of our children, and all Tri-Valley residents, please start selling unleaded fuel UL 100 at LVK as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Donna cobame
Donna Cabanne
