FlexNet'M - Technology you can trust
Flex Net is a robust, high-powered solution
based on open standards. Ir gives electric.
gas and water utilities a communications
network that is designed and huilt
specifically for smart grid applications.
Working with smart meters, Flex Net
provides utilities a dedicated and secure
two-way communications highway over
which to transmit and receive customer
Ltsagc data - the hallmark of Advanced
Metering I nfrastructurc (AM I) solutions.
Utilities can more effectively monitor
aml manage the distribution and use of
electricity, water or gas.
With automatic delivery and analysis of
consumption clam, utilities arc able to
match supply with consumer demand,
resulting in much better urili1.ation of
resources with the least ;1mount of waste.
Customers can he billed hascd on actual
usage patterns and be encouraged to ti.~e
resources more wisely. "I hey can receive
early notification of water or gas leaks,
tampering. equipment problems or outages.
With these advantages and more. Sensus
is redefi ning the standard for utility /\Ml.
ln the Flex Net environment, smarr meters
communicate data throughout the clay -
such as electric power consumed from the
grid and returned tn the grid by customers
who generate alternative energy - or water

A Dedicated and Protected
Communications Highway
Reliable, secure and cost-effective.
Unlike other utility networks that operate
on costly power line infrasrrucrures or
low-powered. shared radio frequencies,
Flex Net uses primary use radio spectru111,
protected by law from interference and
bundled into rhc network solution. ·1 his
strategy presems essentia l advanrnges that
other systc111s cannot offer.
No frequency sharing, no interference,
no problems - period. While other
systems fight intertcrcncc and .~ignal noise
in shared bands, FlcxNet rrans111its with
a clarit y and secu rity that is prorccrcd by

l11e highest signal power and range in
the industry. FlexNcr wireless d evices can
transmit at up to two warts. potentially 10
ro 100 times more power than devices on
unlicensed spec trum. I ligh signal power
and low noise combine to significa ntly
extend network reach. Instead of a fraction
ofa mile between cnclpnints. a Flex Net
network can trans111it up to 40 miles from
point to poin1.
A simpler, more manageable

More reliable communications.
Flex N et's dedicated highway for data
transmission makes communication more
reliable than orher systems that require
channel hopping over radio frequencies.
Cost-effective, rapid builcl-out.
Flex Net systems have access to more than
4,000 rower sites covering more t han 90
pcrcem of the U.S. population. ·1 he towerbased architecture can be quickly deployed without concern for casement and access
issues. /\ncl because Flex Net transmits
stronger over a wider signal area, initial
infrastructure build-our and ongoing

Multilayered security to protect
data privacy ancl integrity. Federal law
prohibits infringement on licensed

Sensus Analytics Acoustic Monitoring application
for the Permalog+ logger
The Sensus Analytics Acoustic Monitoring application combines the proven Permalog® technology with the Sensus FlexNet® communication network and Sensus SmartPoints® to deliver a powerful, remote leak detectio n solution.
Using sound waves to detect flow, Permalog+ modules activate overnight, listening to the distribution system when ambient noise is at its lowest. Sensus SmartPoint modules carry real-time data via FlexNet to Sensus Analytics where flow conditions are reported. The Acoustic Monitoring application automatically analyzes the data and sends an alert if a leak condition exists. Service crews can quickly investigate and make repairs before they become costly problems or prominent stories in the news.

Borough of Monaca Adds Another Brick in its
Road to Sustainability
Case Study
PA TOWN DEPLOYS SMART WATER NETWORK
Located just 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Monaca is a quaint community of nearly 6,000 people. And, while it may be small in numbers, its commitment to sustainability is as deep as the bordering Ohio River.
With the help of the Sustainable Pittsburgh Program, the Borough took stock of its practices and found that there was room for improvement. Borough Manager Mario Leone Jr. not only
embraces sustainability enhancements but believes his community can be an example to others.
Armed with a gold star from the Southeast Pennsylvania Sustainable Community Program for his sustainability efforts, he's off to a great start.
CHALLENGE
One of the key opportunities for sustainability improvements is located in the Borough's water system. With a leak-prone, aging system, the Borough knew it needed an upgrade to
new, clean technology that would help increase productivity, improve billing accuracy and save money.
The Borough began by upgrading about 20,000 feet of
water lines in an attempt to reduce breaks and improve
water quality and pressure. Then, they added a smart water network solution from Sensus. This involved replacing 2,438 water meters and deploying a fixed base communication
network with an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI)
system. The Sensus multi-application Flex Net system,
coupled with Permalog leak detection, was connected to
SRII and iPERL™ water meters.
Mario Leone Jr.
Borough Manager
Borough Manager
Leone said, "Leaks
eventually tell you
where they are, but can
you afford to wait?"
The Borough of Monaca could not afford to wait Jor leaks to reveal themselves and set off on a search for partners and products that would help overcome five key challenges:
I. Reduce the time and expenses of labor, equipment and transportation costs
2. Reduce restoration costs by pinpointing leak locations
3. Reduce treatment costs by lowering chemical, electrical and equipment expenses
4. Reduce liability cost by minimizing chances of
sinkholes, washouts, etc.
5. Improve customer confidence
The new water lines and smart water network are expected to save the Borough $2.6 million through 2026. As Leone told a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter, "I want to be a good environmental steward. r want a sustainable community for my children. But the driving factor is economic."
RESULTS
The 14th Street spring and waterfall has been a landmark for as long as anyone can remember. Located in a remote area at the top of a steep hill, the waterfall was well-known yet difficult to access or reach.
Turns out the spring was not part of nature but rather, a long-standing rupture buried under the ground; a fountain of wasted money and water unearthed by leak detection
-- sensus
technology. In fact, Sensus Flex Net™ with Permalog leak detection alerted the Borough to this leak and eight others within days of being deployed.
"This leak existed for years," said Leone. "No one really knows exactly when it started but we estimate it dates back more than 20 years."
With the leak spilling more than 200,000 gallons of water per day, Leone says the Borough lost about 1.46 billion gallons of water over those two decades. Not anymore.
The leak was fixed and water was saved but the spring was just one stop on the path towards building a more sustainable community. There were more benefits to come.
Monaca had 2,221 water accounts on record. After completing the new water meter installation, the Borough determined it actually had 2,412 water accounts, displaying a shortfall of 191 water accounts! "You can't manage what you don't measure and you can't measure what you don't manage," said Leone. "We truly believe this technology has paid for itself." With better leak detection and remote meter reads, the Borough's utility, overtime and chemicals budgets have seen steady decline since the implementation of its smart water network.
Today, the Borough has a proven means to increase
meter-reading efficiency, reduce overhead costs and enhance customer service simply, reliably and with unlimited flexibility.
But there's always tomorrow, and always more to be done.
Monaca is hoping to use its real-time meter readings as a catalyst to conservation by providing the data through an online customer portal that residents can access to monitor and manage their own water usage.
For Monaca and the communities it hopes to influence, the road to success is one of action. "In order to sustain our conservation efforts, we not only have to talk the talk in educating our municipalities, but we have to walk the walk by doing," said Leone.

SmartPoint 520M
Pit Set Module
The SmartPoint~ 520M Pit Set Module is a rad io transceiver that provides water utilities inbound and o utbound access to water measurement and ancillary device d iagnostics
via rad io signa l. The SmartPoint 520M is designed for submersible, p it-set environments.
TouchCoupler Design
The SrnartP01nt 520M Module utilizes TouchCoupler, t he patented Sensus inductive coupling comm unication platform, to interface with the encoded meter. With TouchCoupler, the SmartPoint 520M Module can connect to the meter using existing two wir·e AMR installations instead of requiring utilities to access the meter to install a new threewire connectio n. This results in a fast, efficient and reliable connection at minimal cost.
Operation
With its migratable, two-way communicatio n ability, the M -Series SmartPoint functions as a walk-by/ drive-by endpoint, fixed-base endpoint, or combination of the two. This flexibility increases utility data collection capabilities and streamlines operations. The SmartPoint 520M M odule receives input from the meter register and remotely sends data to a walk-by/drive-by or fixed-base collection devrce. The SmartPoint 520M Module easily migrates from walk-by/drive-by to fixed base by simply installing a Base Station.
In walk-by/drive-by mode, the SmartPoint 520M Module collects data and awaits an activation signal from the Vehicle Gateway Basestation (VGB) or Hand-Held Device (HI-ID). Upon sig nal receipt, it transmits readings, the meter identification number and any alarms.
As a fixed-base endpoint, the SmartPoint 520M Module interacts with one or more strategically placed Base Statio ns located in the utility service area.
Top of the hour readings and other diagnostics are instantly forwarded to the Regional Network Interface (RN!)™ at time of tra nsmission. The FlexNet' communication netwmk provides unmatched reliability by using expansive tower· receiver coverage of metering end points, data/message redundancy, failover backup provisions and operat ion on FCC primary use (unshared) RF spectrum.

iPERL Smart Water Meter
Electromagnetic Flow Measurement System
Sensus iPERI 'smart water meters are desrgned to capture both lost water and lost revenue The rnnovatrve magnetic technology delrver s unmatched low flow regrstration and mrni mc1I r,ressure loss. W ith no rnoving parts, iPERL maintains its accuracy over a 20 year lifetime and Is equipped with smart water alarms - delivering the intelligence you need to qurckly 1esolve rssues rn the field.
Industry Leading Performance
The patented measurement technology of the iPERL water meter provides continuous and enhanced accurc1cy ranges at both low and high fl ows and perpetual accuracy over the life of the p1oduct. The iP[RL meter has a 20 year accuracy warranty and a 20- year bc1ttery life guarnntee. Over this 20 year lifespan, your iPERI wi ll measure Just as accurately as the clr1y it was installed.
Construction
The iPERL hc1s a flow lltbe that Is comprised entirely of composite polymer, a thermal polymer shell, c1nd an electronrc register 111s1de.
Electronic Register
The 9 digit hermetically sealed electronic register with LCD display was desrgned to eliminate clir"I, water, and moisture contamination In pit settings. The large, easy-toread display includes AMI/AMR drgits, direction of flow, units of measure, and empty p rpe detectron The AMI/AMR digits and units of measure are fully programmable. The register also provides use1 confiqurable datil 10991119.
Solid State Electromagnetic Technology
By avoiding the use of a mechilnicill measuring element inside the flow tube, metering pe1formance is linear over the entrre flow range - ensuring no reduction in accuracy at any flow rate over the life of the meter. The iPERL meter uses our patented remanent magnetic field technology - requiring far less energy and delivering superior accuracy.
Tamperproof
The 111tegrated construction of the iPt=RL w11ter meter prevents removal of tile regIste1 to obtain free water The mc1~1netic tamper c1nd low fielrl alarms will both 1nd1cale any attempt to lilmper wrth the magnetic. fielrl of the iPt=RI meter. The meter communrcat1on alarm 111cl ici1les a possible cut cc1ble.
Alarms
Quick resolt, tion of f1elrl issues Is made possible with smart wateI alarms includ ing leak detection, reverse flow, empty pipe, magnetic tamper and low battery. When integ1ated with our FlexNet' commlrnicat1on network, remotely gathering and transmitting data has never been more relinble or p1ofitable. sensus
