SUBJECT: Conduct Interviews of New Applicants for Consideration to Fill Commission Vacancies Due to Expiring Terms
RECOMMENDATION
Interview applicants for consideration of nomination and appointment at the next regular City Council meeting.
BACKGROUND
Commissioners are appointed by the City Council. Commission members serve staggered terms of four (4) years expiring June 1 of the year the term is set to expire. If vacancies occur, otherwise than by expiration of the term, they shall be filled by appointment for the unexpired portion of the term. At the expiration of each term, or unexpected vacancy occurs, a vacancy notice is advertised and resumes accepted. The City Council may conduct interviews to appoint the most qualified individual.
DISCUSSION
Terms expired for two seats on the Planning Commission, two seats on the Parks and Recreation Commission and one seat on the Public Safety Traffic Commission. Staff recommends that the Council interview applicants for possible appointment at the next regular City Council meeting.

Parks and Recreation Commission
The Parks & Recreation Commission serve as advisors to the City Council on matters regarding public recreation, aid in the development of recreational programs, and assist with plans for development and maintenance of park facilities. The Commission meets on 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
Planning Commission
The Planning Commission works in conjunction with the planning department to ensure the growth of the city. It deals with zoning ordinances, tentative tract, parcel maps, site plans and various permits. The Commission meets on 2nd Monday of the month at 6:00pm.
Public Safety & Traffic Commission
The Public Safety & Traffic Commission serve as advisors to the City Council on traffic issues (street parking, street sweeping, pedestrian safety, etc.) and public safety concerns (police and fire protection, emergency preparedness, and protects public health). The commission also recommends methods of dealing with gangs and sponsors programs in cooperation with local schools, the Sherriff’s Department, and other agencies. The Commission meets on 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
