Another stinky real estate deal, another real estate operator sucking the teat of our City Council. This deal was authorized in 2017, a full 2 years before the coronavirus entered the United States. How in the world can the EDD claim "COVID-19-related closures" when dozens of other office spaces in the Downtown area have remained open and operating during this time?

6. (22-0134) Recommendation to authorize City
Manager, or designee, to execute all documents
necessary to amend Contract No. 33519 with
Walters Wholesale Electric Company, of Long
Beach, CA, and Contract No. 33518 with
Consolidated Electrical Distributors, Inc., of Los
Angeles, CA, for furnishing and delivering as-needed
electrical supplies, and extend the term of the
contracts to September 30, 2022. (Citywide)
Dave Shukla [email protected] Curious.
File this in the: "Why Long Beach needs to either develop a CCA or just go full LBDWP already" folder, yeesh.

7. (22-0135) Recommendation to adopt resolution
authorizing City Manager, or designee, to execute a
contract, and any necessary documents including
any subsequent amendments, with John Deere
Construction Retail Sales, of Moline, IL, for the
purchase of a John Deere 332G Skid Steer, with
related equipment and accessories, on the same
terms and conditions afforded to Sourcewell
(formerly the National Joint Powers Alliance), in a
total amount not to exceed $146,000, inclusive of
taxes and fees. (Citywide)
Dave Shukla [email protected] Curious.
Like item #6 (34 FTE's! for whom?) and item #5 (opportunity costs...) above, the nature of the contracts this City has been giving out, and how they operate across departments, especially as it relates to the Mission of the City, is not entirely clear... let alone something that it seems there is Council deliberation upon.
So, on the first page of the Staff Report, 1st graf of 'Discussion', last sentence: "for excavation of conduit, installation of traffic signals and streetlight foundations, and removal of construction debris." Removal of construction "debris".
Not for nothing, but does the City of Long Beach have accurate venting event point in time data for "construction related" activities and "debris" from 2015 to present, please?
Clearly, a Skid Steer (w/ related quip and cessories 'natch, sic) isn't something one uses in isolation, and the overall pathing of which signal timers and wiring and where conduits co-locate with gas (and other) lines matters, yes?

HEARING: Patricia Clark [email protected] We have a severe lack of senior housing, and this needs to be a priority in the plan.

17. (22-0145) Recommendation to request City
Manager and Long Beach Health and Human
Services in coordination with Planned Parenthood
and other reproductive health care advocates meet
and develop written recommendations on how Long
Beach can partner with Los Angeles County to
respond should Roe v. Wade be overturned and
report back within 45 days.
Dave Shukla [email protected] Strong Support.
Not going to waste anyone's time on public comment (written/verbal) save for this:
I will happily donate time and labor to the City of Long Beach's efforts to partner with Los Angeles County, should this potentiality materialize -- i.e.
Dave will happily take direction and get to work on any Council-approved research/empirics on this issue.
[My mother is Sandy Shukla -- what do you expect me to say, I'm not team-TERF?]
Thanking you,
Dave Shukla

18. (22-0146) Recommendation to request City
Manager to work with Long Beach Continuum of
Care Partners and all appropriate departments to
study the feasibility of acquiring land and funds to
support the expansion of the Health and Human
Services Department's Tiny Home Shelters for
individuals experiencing homelessness, and report
back within 60 days.
Dave Shukla [email protected] Curious.
Which is not to say the same thing as 'support' ... for whom, and which land, and who pays, please?

presentation on the 2021 Independent Redistricting
Commission for the City of Long Beach. (Citywide)
Dave Shukla [email protected] After cancelling the IRC meeting and pulling it off Legistar this past week? Ok... Please note that I do intend to provide public comment on this item, verbally in real time after this presentation is made.
Preferably with some expectation that I will be allowed to speak on this at that time.

21. (22-0149) Recommendation to adopt resolution
authorizing City Manager, or designee, to execute a
contract, and any necessary documents including
any necessary subsequent amendments, with
Federal Signal Corporation, of Oakbrook, IL, by and
through its local dealer, Haaker Equipment
Company, of La Verne, CA, for the purchase of four
CNG-fueled Elgin Street Sweepers on the same
terms and conditions afforded to Sourcewell
(formerly the National Joint Powers Alliance) in a
total amount not to exceed $1,696,346, inclusive of
taxes and fees. (Citywide)
Dave Shukla [email protected] Oppose.
1. These could be ZEV's.
2. Why do you want city departments (not to make further mention of our drayage drivers...) buy two trucks? CNG is so last century, if we decide to make it last century instead of the reason why we sink ourselves in this one and never get out of the 21st century - you realize we only call the 20th century so, as such, after it's in the books, right?
3. What would it take to hire more city mechanics to keep existing machines running, and more city drivers to drive the same machines just over more routes, for the operational interregnum period before we can go fully electric with city-owned battery storage charging / generation hub ports? -- if you can do it the once for bikes downtown, imagine having enough money to do it for EV charging throughout the city --
4. It would be nice to see more specificity in these contracts, especially on the racial / intergenerational / gendered equity aspects.
5. More data, not resolutions, please.

26. (22-0117) Recommendation to declare ordinance
amending the Long Beach Municipal Code by adding
Section 1.08.150 relating to gender references, read
and adopt as read. (Citywide)
Dave Shukla [email protected] Dave (he/him)
Don't mind that it's important to some folks to assert their gender identity, and that they should have some expectation of being treated as such, not only in "safe spaces" or Governmental or Public fora, but where there are clearly established prior community agreements or practiced norms.
That said, for the amount of drama/effort involved, personal matters like these can be handled better in my town.
For instance: Dave was on the swim team at Poly. Dave is not trans.
Dave nonetheless changed in/out of speedos to swim laps in a trans- friendly, and not trans-phobic, kinda way. In the 1990s! How? Did a deck change. Went to the edge of the pool, faced the wall, put a towel over and...changed my clothes. Lots of boys and girls did. If nothing else, to save time. Boys or girls who felt different changed in their (respective) locker rooms.
From pronouns to deck changes to whatever, Gender, like Race/Class/etc. is just one aspect of public, i.e. "social" life. 2/7/2022
NEW BUSINESS: Dave Shukla [email protected] Are we sure that's all the new business? Waiting to see if there are any corrections to the agenda...
2/7/2022
UNFINISHED BUSINESS Dave Shukla [email protected] Doesn't that always sound ominous? As in, "if this item does not get cleared... we're not meeting our business ratio!" ?
Apologies for the sarcasm, but the cult of managerialism and over- professionalisation in this country...
...it must be said that the self-sanctimony and officiousness in these proceedings can at times be a bit much for those who thread down more like Raymond Williams or Charles Sanders Pierce or some such... 2/7/2022
