-EXTERNAL-
Hello Honorable Mayor Garcia, Honorable Councilmembers and City Clerk Garza,
Please see the attached letter of support from the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce for item #11 (22-0175) on today's City Council agenda. Thank you for considering this item.
Recommendation to request City Manager to work with the Financial Management Department’s Purchasing Division to ensure a study of the current Local Preference Ordinance is included in the Extreme Procurement Makeover Project (which is remaking procurement policies, processes, and practices in Long Beach), including an analysis, assessment of the feasibility and options for implementation of the items. In addition, prioritize this study by modifying the work plan for the Extreme Procurement Makeover Project, and report back to the City Council in no more than 180 days.
Thanks,

February 25, 2022 Mayor Robert Garcia Long Beach City Council 411 West Ocean Blvd. Long Beach, CA 90802 Dear Mr. Mayor, Councilmember Allen and Long Beach City Councilmembers, On behalf of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, our 750 members, including both local mom and pop shops to multi-national corporations that makeup the community of Long Beach, we are writing a letter of support for item on the March 1, 2022 City Council meeting, 22-0223 “Analysis of Local Preference in Contracting”. We at the Chamber pride ourselves on connecting and providing resources for local businesses in Long Beach and the surrounding area. These businesses range from local businesses owned and cared for by families to multi-national corporations who choose to set up sites in Long Beach and hire locally. This ordinance proposed by Councilmember Cindy Allen and with the support of Councilmember Mungo, and Councilmember Saro is especially important because there are so many options for local hiring that are overlooked in favor of contracts given to non-local or out of state companies, simply because they have received a contract in the past. We whole heartedly support an ordinance and look forward to seeing the results of the study from the Purchasing Division. Additionally, we encourage Long Beach to use this opportunity to revamp the bid process to take into consideration whether potential contractors are in active litigation with the City of Long Beach over prior contracts, and to also consider litigation with other large municipalities as part of the process. Sincerely, Jeremy Harris President & CEO, Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce
