There you go again, allowing the richest of the rich to get richer by allowing them to forfeit fees for their ongoing seafaring activities. Yawn.

They should be paying through the nose rather than getting a discount to use OUR public property. Public property. Not theirs. Make.Them.Pay. 4/5/2022

Manager, or designee, to approve a fee waiver for
the Navy Yacht Club - Long Beach, in an amount not

Those with wealth should be paying, not getting waivers. What is wrong with you??? Is this another quid pro quo to get campaign dollars? Sure looks like it... while the item says it's for veterans, I doubt it. The rich like to tell you one thing and do another. Too bad you continue to fall for this crap.

Yacht clubs should NEVER get waivers for their events. Period. They can afford it and it's OUR property, not yours to give away to whomever donates to your war chests.

YACHT CLUBS SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER EVER GET WAIVERS
OF FEES. THEY'RE RICH. THEY CAN AFFORD IT. YOU'RE NOT

BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR TO SEAL BEACH, YOU'RE JUST
LETTING THE RICH SLIDE ON THEIR OBLIGATIONS TO PAY FEES.

IF IT WERE ME, YOU'D CHARGE ME DOUBLE.

I write in support of this motion because park equity is a major issue in Long Beach and the region.

However, it astounds me that this Council rejected the River Park at 3701 Pacific Place last year, citing "acquisition costs" as a barrier but now, in this motion's discussion memo, also notes that $30 million in state funding is available specifically for "acquisition and development." So either you guys didn't know what funding was available and, thus, made an ill- informed decision, or you ignored the available funding, or you lied about it. The residents Long Beach have been organizing for parks for years and you're still just shuffling the deck of cards rather than committing time and budget to their development.

30. (22-0384) Recommendation to request City
Manager work with the Director of Parks, Recreation
and Marine as well as the Long Beach Pickleball
Advisory Group to develop a plan for the future of
pickleball in Long Beach including; the feasibility of, converting all tennis courts to dual use courts,
creating dedicated pickleball courts, developing a
minimum amount of storage at each park for
equipment, and exploring further partnerships with
local schools for joint use of LBUSD tennis courts.

This report back to City Council is requested within
60 days.

John Iozzi [email protected] I am a longterm resident of Long Beach (over 50 years). I was an avid tennis player but can't play anymore due to physical issues like bad knees. I felt like there was a void in my life, then I discovered pickle ball and feel like I have a new lease on life. I feel like an athlete again. In addition to being fun, competitive, and great outdoor exercise, it is very sociable. I have met a lot of wonderful people. It has become part of my life. As one of the fastest growing sports in America, we need dedicated pickle ball courts to meet the ever growing demand for this great sport.

For instance, it is not uncommon to see 2 to 4 tennis players on a 3 hour period compared to 25 - 50 pickle ball players. And 4 pickle ball players during the same time period. With this incredible demand. I respectfully request the city provide sufficient dedicated pickle ball courts for its' citizens.

Jeffrey Osowski [email protected] I heavily support dual-using the tennis courts and converting the roller rink in Belmont Shores to pickleball courts. On a typical morning (4 times a week), 20-40 people of all ages and backgrounds socialize over pickleball.

Many times there are also basketball players playing alongside and competing for court space. Never in my 20+ times going have I seen anyone using the roller rink. Expanding the pickleball courts will enable more people to play and help keep in line with the fast-growing demand for pickleball (The fastest growing sport in America per NPR) and it will allow more people to play basketball as well. This is a simple win for the community of Long Beach with almost no trade-off.

Mark Leonard [email protected] I have participated in pickleball in Long Beach for over a year and have witnessed the tremendous growth of the sport in the city. The Marina Vista group has doubled over the past year and we regularly have over 40 people gathering to play. And this is with no permanent courts available.

The lack of courts is the major constraint on further growth.

I have also participated in tournaments in Seal Beach, Anaheim and Newport Beach. I've been very impressed by the investments those cities have made in creating pickleball centers next to tennis. I would very much like to see Long Beach do the same.

Pickleball is the nation's fastest growing sport with a 40% increase in participation over the past two years. Two professional pickleball tours that cross the country are testament to its popularity as well.

I wholeheartedly ask that the council accept this recommendation.

Thank you.

Lee Swain [email protected] I am a Long Beach resident and regularly play pickleball at Marina Vista Park. With all the frequent pickleball play at this park site, I request that the City of Long Beach convert the east tennis court into 4 permanent pickleball courts with nets and provide an additional gate on the east side to allow easier entry and exit from the pickleball courts to the existing sidewalk. I would also like the City of Long Beach to re-stripe the west courts to provide better visibility of the now black pickleball court lines to make these courts more useful for regular pickleball play. The existing and underutilized Bayshore Roller Rink should also be converted into a permanent Pickleball Facility to maximize the benefit and use of this key public facility in Long Beach. In addition to exercise, people are drawn to the social aspects of pickleball, the ease of learning the sport, and in meeting new friends. It is a sport that is founded on the premise of building community through pure fun!!

A. M. [email protected] As a citizen of Long Beach for over 23 years, I have never seen such an amazingly large & diverse group of people of all ages coming together in great sportsmanship to use our public courts for fun, exercise, and meeting local neighbors. Pickleball has literally changed my life! At most I use to rollerblade in solitude along the beach path occasionally, but now I am motivated to meet up with others that I don’t even know so we can come together to enjoy ourselves, beautiful Long Beach, and some exercise four or more times a week. As someone who’s work schedule varies wildly from week to week, I ask for those of us who need more options for playing pickleball for LB to please stripe all the public tennis courts to dual use and to specifically convert Marina Vista Park courts to permanent pickleball courts (including lights that would be invaluable in the Fall and Winter months.). It truly is stunning the number of residents who are now making use of the courts for pickleball. -April M. 3/30/2022

All guns should be monitored. If used in a crime...send the criminals to prison.

We support our police. Let them do their job please. There's no equality as long as we have good people and bad people.

Karen Blair [email protected] Ghost gun rules and regulations do not address the root cause of the problem of the gun violence that plagues the City of Long Beach. The city must hire more police, provide more funding that is specific to provide trading for the law enforcement officials to retain and promote the anti- gang division that was depleted. With the amount of drugs and human trafficking that is being promoted to enter our country from the southern border, the need to for gang and drug enforcement is greater. Also, the drug dealers that loiter around the middle schools and high schools need to be arrested and detained for selling drugs and getting young people in our community addicted to substance that leads to homelessness. Please address the root causes of why ghost guns are used, gangs! Ghost guns are not acceptable, but enforcement of laws cannot be completed without law enforcement in a civilized society able to enforce these laws and a judicial system that penalizes the criminal.

Ghost guns are scary, but they're related to only a small fraction of the violence in our community. Council time would be better spent on addressing the root causes of violence, which include inequitable access to opportunity, chronically underfunded education, dangerous or unhealthy living conditions, overcrowding, job discrimination, and lack of access to mental healthcare.

Kate Sachnoff [email protected] Thank you, Councilwoman Price, for bringing this issue front and center.

We need to understand and address the threat these "ghost guns" and all sources of illegal weapons present. In additional to criminalizing the guns and their parts, I hope we will look at ways of preventing their manufacture and distribution.

Scott Wilcox [email protected] We currently must go to Garden Grove or Los Alamitos to play pickle ball.

In those cities they use the tennis courts and pickle ball courts together.

We believe that this is an equitable and common sense and low cost way of encouraging more people to exercise and be outdoors

Nikhil Malik [email protected] I am in full support of supporting the growth of pickleball in Long Beach.

My wife and I moved to Long Beach right before the spread of COVID-19 so we didn't get a chance to meet our neighbors and build friendships however through pickleball (once vaccinated) we had the opportunity to interact with the community and build lasting relationships. It is not just a sport but a sense of community.

I am new to Pickleball but I'm hooked. I like being outside and participating in team activity. I have met many new people who enjoy Pickleball and love Long Beach for the parks and activities it provides.

Pickleball needs some dedicated courts! I play at Marina Vista courts.

One of the two tennis courts has lines drawn for 4 pickleball games. On the days I play all four pickleball courts are utilized and there are 16 to 20 people waiting. Often times the other tennis court is not being utilized.

Each time we play, someone brings the frames and nets, has to set them up and take them down after we finish. I don't own a net, so if I want to play I have to come on the days that are designated. I just can't call some friends to join me on the courts. Imagine if tennis players had to bring their nets and set them up each time. It's frustrating! I whole heartily support Long Beach to establish permanent Pickleball courts. Please make Pickleball another option for Long Beach residents!

David Anderson [email protected] My name is David Anderson an ambassador with the USA Pickleball Association and an active member of the LB Picklball Advisory Group.

Thank you council members for allowing the pickleball community to speak direct to you. It means a lot to us. I've been playing pickleball for a little over three years. It is a most exciting sport that's very easy to learn.

As an ambassador for the sport, I seek any and all opportunities to promote the growth of pickleball. As an avid pickleball player including tournaments and recreational play, I'm very interested in seeing pickleball flourish in Long Beach. I'm tired of driving to premium courts as far north as Padadena or south to Tustin. Players play where there are nice courts, and permanent courts are the gold standard in pickleball. I long to see Long Beach make a definitive statement to these other cities who have a head start on pickleball. I also really want to see the sport promoted among the youth who are the future of our sport.

Mark Hardison [email protected] Good evening:

My name is Mark Hardison, I am a member of the Pickleball Advisory Group, a Board Member with Partners of Parks, & former Recreation & Community Services Director with City of Hawthorne. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. and this only accelerated during Covid. The demand for public facilities is high, with many current residents forced to play in neighbor communities due to lack of courts.

We ask that City Council approve Item #30 and direct staff to make requested improvements, in addition to appropriate signage to the existing Pickleball programs at Bayshore, Marina Vista, College Park, & Somerset Parks in the short term. In addition to dual stripe sports courts at city parks identified in current PRM budget if deemed appropriate by PRM & PB Advisory Group.

Long term - Identify funding and facilities such as BJK, El Dorado Tennis Centers and others for permanent courts. Establish Joint Use agreement with LBUSD for use of their facilities

Patty Crouch [email protected] “We can only play tennis here. That’s where the net is, that’s where the court is the size we need. They set up their own nets anyways,” Matt said. “I think that this arrangement, honestly, is best for everyone.”
“No one is ever going to come and question them because they have a big mob of people.” —Tennis player Matthew McDermott These two quotes are statements by Matthew McDermott from the Signal Tribune from yesterday April 4th. These two statements are definitely inaccurate and false. There are in fact at least 69 Tennis courts in Long Beach and four at Scherer park 1.8 mi away from Somerset. His second statement is equally as false because he and his mom have been the aggressor in an argument I filmed. Pickleballers are inclusive, friendly and welcoming. There is enough room for everyone and making a tennis court that can be utilized for a sport where many can play should be a priority instead of not only segregating us from the court but not giving us a place to go either.

You will see the huge disparity that exists for all of us who want to play pickleball. I ask that our city council works with our pickleball advisory committee to bring permanent pickleball courts to Long Beach.

Jessica Castile [email protected] I support Suzie Price's Agenda Item #30. I am a Long Beach resident and regularly play pickleball at College Estates Park. We have 40-60 people show up on a typical day to play pickleball for 1-3 hours. We have a storage locker and set up 4-6 nets which can accommodate 16-24 players at a time. The near-term improvements we'd like to see are pretty simple and straightforward: 1) bathrooms should be open everyday, including weekends and holidays because we play everyday and 2) a second gated entry should be installed to minimize disruption when one games ends and players are walking off the court and new players are walking on. I believe these are relatively low cost issues that do not take a great deal of study. I strongly urge that Agenda item #30 be modified to request that near-term items be responded to in 30 days and that a Pickleball Master Plan be responded to in 60 days.

Visiting the park and playing pickleball is a healthy activity both mentally and physically. Open play in the parks provides the opportunity to socialize and get to know people from around the city as well as people visiting from out of town. Personally, I can say that I have gotten to know more than two dozen new people on a first name basis and I have reconnected with several past acquaintances while playing in the parks over the past year. I see others making friendships too, and our city becoming more personally connected. From my perspective, the hard- court areas within the Long Beach parks system are an underutilized resource. Further integrating pickleball into the existing infrastructure of the parks and repurposing obsolete space for pickleball use where there is demand is a sound investment in the parks, the people, and the communities of Long Beach. Thank you for your consideration and I encourage you to support pickleball in Long Beach.

Valerie Uyeda [email protected] I support Suzie Price's agenda item #30. I am new resident in Long Beach and discovered Pickleball when I came across a group playing at Marina Vista park. The group offered to loan me equipment and taught me the Pickleball basics that same day in August 2021.I immediately found the sport to be great exercise and a fun way to meet other people. I told several of my neighbors and they, too, have taken up Pickleball. At Marina Vista, we often have 16 people playing on a single tennis court, with another 10-30 people waiting to rotate into play. The other tennis court is often empty or has only 2 people playing. Installing a permanent Pickleball court at Marina Vista park with a gate adjacent to the playground would allow multiple groups to play Pickleball at any time of day. If permanent courts cannot be installed, dual use striping on both tennis courts with signage to allow either tennis or Pickelball and secure equipment storage (for Pickleball nets) is needed.

John Iozzi [email protected] I'm a long term Long Beach resident (over 50 years). I live in District 3 and have for most of that time. I was an avid tennis player for over 30 years but haven't been able to play for the last 7 or so years due to physical issues like knee problems. I heard about pickle ball a few years ago and was very interested but couldn't find a place to play. Fortunately I found our about the Marina Vista group about 6 months, started playing and fell in love with it. It gave me a new lease on life. I feel like an athlete again. In addition to the fun of this wonderful game there is a very strong sense of commadire and support. I feel like I joined a whole new community full of wonderful people. Pickle ball brings people together.

There is great demand from Long Beach residents for pickle ball and we need dedicated courts. We are only asking for a small portion of the existing tennis courts to be converted to pickle ball courts. Thank you for your consideration.

Kris Vogt [email protected] USA Pickleball has, for the 5th consecutive year, declared April as National Pickleball Month! Pickleball has been around since 1965 but a 2022 Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) survey indicates Pickleball growth as over 39% in the last two years nationwide--now up to

4.8 million players. That growth can be seen in Long Beach as well.

There are scores of players that come to Bayshore, College Estates, Somerset, and Marina Vista Parks to play the game on temporary courts on shared with tennis and basketball. There are locations such as sport courts, parking lots, or park picnic slabs throughout the City where Pickleball players bring their own nets and create their own courts for play.

The interest in Pickleball in Long Beach is strong, and the need for permanent Pickleball courts in Long Beach is a significant. At present there is only 1 permanent court in Bayshore. It is exciting that Long Beach is embracing Pickleball and committing to planning permanent courts!

Sal Fiore [email protected] Hi Suzie,
Not sure if my previous comment was submitted correctly so if it was I apologize and I'll keep this one short. Thank you for supporting all who wish to bring Pickleball sports recreation to Marina Vista Park with permanent courts. We would be so grateful to the Council to convert the 2 tennis courts into 8 permanent Pickleball courts for reasons that go beyond the 30-50 players who show up to play there 4 days a week.

There are many times my wife and I cannot make it to the morning sessions with the rest of the group however we would like to practice later on in the day, just the two of us. Permanent courts would be great for the convenience especially for those of us not fortunate enough to own a net that's stashed in the trunk. Thank you, Sal Fiore 562-221-4816 4/4/2022

Tom Klinedinst [email protected] I am a Vietnam Veteran. I am a retired Deputy Director of Child Protective Services in Riverside County. We have long made child protection a priority in this Country. Can we also do a better job of protecting veterans, another vulnerable group. It is profoundly sad to read of thousands of vets killings themselves. Thousands EVERY YEAR. In contrast it has been encouraging to read of vets having transformative and healing experiences playing pickleball. It is easy to learn, easy on the body. It is a social sport, reduces isolation and improves mood. It improves overall health. It is changing the lives of veterans. We need permanent pickleball courts not only for the large number of current players, but for futures players as well, as the sport is growing so rapidly.

Long Beach, lets help our vets who are isolated and hurting. We will reach across the net with a smile, thank them for their service, and teach them how to play this great sport. Sincerely, Tom Klinedinst 4/4/2022

Vivian Linderman [email protected] Somerset is the only park in North/Central LB where an active, growing group plays regularly on one tennis court. Yet, tennis players confront us and refuse to give up or move courts so we can play where we’ve put down chalked court lines. When we’re forced to play on the volleyball court, safety becomes an issue for both basketball players and pickleball players as the play is adjacent. Somerset is a no brainer to establish permanent pickleball courts. Within a mile are three other city parks with tennis courts along with the LA County and LBCC courts. It has a busy after school program, lights, open bathrooms, and is away from homes.

Established courts with installed nets and striping allow everyone to play regardless of the ability to purchase and set up nets. Group play is currently restricted at Somerset because those who own nets can’t set up more than they already commit to. Pickleball is here to stay, please support our needs. Keep it safe. Keep it free.

Robert Bienenfeld [email protected] My name is Robert Bienenfeld, I live in the 3rd District, and I represent approximately 85 members of the Bayshore Pickleball Club. We play pickleball at the Bayshore courts Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 8am - 12pm. Our members are very diverse, and the vast majority are residents of Long Beach. Pickleball as a sport has grown tremendously and continues to grow.

There are few resources in Long Beach dedicated to Pickleball. At Bayshore we have one dedicated court and two dual-striped courts on one basketball court. We would like the city to dual stripe the second basketball court, which would bring the total of potential courts to five, enabling us to have 20 players at a time, and cycle through another twenty players every 15 minutes. In addition we want to see the Roller Rink converted to pickleball use (it is currently unused for its intended purpose). Other parks need resources as well.

Thank you!

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport players are old, young, middle age, poor and rich. Cities across the country that are paying attention have about 3 courts per 20,000 people. Long Beach needs to catch this wave to serve its citizens 460,000 people should have at 23 courts. 4/3/2022

[email protected] Hello. My name is Mike D. I am a forever Long Beach resident who resides in the 90815 area code. I would like the City of Long Beach to procure sights for dedicated Pickleball courts. Pickleball is now the fastest growing sport in America and our city has yet to utilize its resources to provide adequate permanent sites for this community of enthusiasts. With one dedicated court we are woefully behind in furnishing adequate facilities for this sport. I would hope that our Cities leaders will recognize this deficiency and act appropriately to to address it. We aren't asking to eliminate tennis and their followers but we too deserve the same rights for sufficient and acceptable equity in providing dedicated courts for the large Pickleball body that resides in our fine city.

Long Beach can no longer ignore the pickleball phenomenon, the fastest growing sport in the country and a likely candidate to be an exhibition sport at the 2028 LA Olympic Games. We need more permanent courts all over the city and make Long Beach a preferred destination for pickleball tournaments. Florida, Arizona, Utah, Washington, etc... are all investing massively in pickleball and we can not leave the chance behind us. If Phoenix can have places like

I admire the commitments of Bayshore and Marina Vista Pickleball Clubs to enrich the communal spirit of the City of Long Beach. Both warmly welcome a diverse community of Pickleball enthusiasts from within and outside Long Beach. Many new and visiting players comment how friendly the courts are at Bayshore and Marina Vista (adding further to the exponential growth of Pickleball in Long Beach). However, the City’s present facilities are severely lacking. In order to even accommodate the current numbers of players, new courts need to be developed through shared court usage of outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts and newly constructed, dedicated Pickleball courts.

The Ambassadors, Volunteers and Players are to be commended for their tireless efforts towards the growth of Pickleball in Long Beach.

Pickleball is not only fun to play; it improves body, mind and spirit. Let the City of Long Beach further prescribe to this healthy anti-aging regimen for its residents and neighbors alike.

David Lawee [email protected] Pickleball has been a transformative factor in our family. First with my wife this past summer. To see the smile on her face and positive attitude after coming home from a morning of Pickleball at Marina Vista Park was great. This February she asked me to join her and now I clearly see why she enjoys it so very much. Now I have go with her on a regular bases.

Are daughter has joined us and is taking now taking lessons. My Sister, has also joined the group, a former tennis player and she and several of her friends are starting to become regulars. Pickleball and the group at Marina Vista park have helped create a family activity that we truly treasure. The group reminded me of the sitcom CHEERS. “ Where everyone knows your name” . It’s not just the Pickleball it the sense of communit. Please support the building of this community and the families it supports.

Holly Torpey [email protected] One additional location idea for pickleball courts is to convert some of the courts at Sato Academy. Sato doesn’t have a tennis team, and I believe the courts are mostly unused. Sato students could even be given the opportunity to work at the courts on weekends and evenings, taking reservations, checking people in, etc. I believe many players would be willing and able to pay a small fee for their use and to be able to reserve a court (Seal Beach Tennis Center charges $3/hour for non-members). 4/3/2022

I am 67 years old and have found pickleball to be a way for me to get out and exercise, meet new people and enjoy the outdoors. The cost to play this sport is next to nothing if courts and nets are available. Long Beach needs permanent pickleball courts so anyone at any time has a place to play. Our parks are full of tennis courts, basketball courts, sports courts, soccer fields but not one permanent pickleball court. I have to go to other surrounding cities to play. Please start by installing permanent courts at Marina Vista and multi stripping our tennis courts. This activity is too important for our senior citizens community is wait any longer. 4/3/2022

Ray Pereda [email protected] I support Suzie Price's Agenda Item #30. I play pickleball at Belmont Shore park. During the lockdowns, I was walking by Bayshore and Ocean, aka Horny Corner as it is affectionately known since the 1940s. I saw the regular crowd of people of all ages playing Pickleball. Nowadays, I play several times a week. On Friday, we had lunch courtside, picnic-style with a dozen fine citizens.

I play with teenagers, college students, business people, and retirees. We playfully start talking with comments about missed balls. The pickleball is the center of a public square. It is good exercise for all ages. It is easy to get started and challenging to become a top player. I learn about what's happening in the city there.

Please consider creating more pickleball courts. We'll use them and continue to be fine citizens of Long Beach.

A. -April M. 4/2/2022

Lawrence Silva [email protected] As a resident of Long Beach I would like to voice my support for the proposal to develop a plan for the future of pickleball in Long Beach. As reported by NPR earlier this year, pickleball has recently become one of the fast growing participant sports in America with 4.8 million people playing regularly - almost doubling in under 5 years. Forward thinking municipalities throughout the country have been quickly responding to the growth in pickleball participation by installing new courts or converting a portion of their tennis courts to pickleball. Long Beach can further our position as a world class place to live and play by responding to the growing need. Dedicated pickleball courts in places with current burgeoning pickleball groups such as Marina Vista Park would be a big benefit to the community. In places where dedicated courts are not yet feasible, dual use striping with explanatory signage and secure equipment storage can be quickly installed without significant expense. 4/2/2022

I want to show my support of agenda Item #30 in reference to providing permanent pickleball courts in various areas of Long Beach. I am a local real estate agent, and retired LBUSD Physical Education teacher. I was introduced to pickleball this summer and now play on a regular basis. I have found it to be a fun activity for all ages. I have met so many wonderful people playing pickleball who I would never have otherwise made connections with. I think it is an awesome community building activity along with promoting movement and health for all. I play Monday, Wednesday and Friday and would probably play more if courts were available. I believe starting with improving the courts at Bayshore, College Estate, Marina Vista and Somerset would make sense, then expanding to more parks and schools. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the USA. Expanding pickleball would continue to enhance Long Beach's reputation as one of the best cities in the country for parks and recreation. 4/2/2022

Kyle Goguen [email protected] Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the US for good reason. It's clear in my time playing at the Long Beach courts it promotes community and a healthy lifestyle–both physical and mental. Where else can you see local residents in their 30s playing those in their 70s in a competitive and fun game? It's completely unique and the community of Long Beach would benefit greatly by having more courts. It's clear that the supply of available courts is falling behind the fast growing demand. The residents of the city will greatly benefit by having more facilities. It's an inclusive sport that is a cheap way to stay active for locals of all ages. 4/2/2022

Community, Good Health, Friendships and Joy are just a few words to describe what Pickleball brings to Long Beach. During the pandemic, I was walking down by Bayshore, and stopped to talk to some people of all ages playing Pickleball. They welcomed me in, and I now play 3-4 times per week. This sport brings every age and background together, providing healthy exercise, social interaction that turn into friendships, and tons of laughter. It’s an affordable sport for all, if we only had permanent courts as proposed in item #30 of Suzie Price’s agenda. Please get a jump start on making our city not only the bicycle friendly city that it is, but a pickleball friendly city. From our youth to our elderly all over our city, it will provide a connection to each other and good health. Please Long Beach, let’s bring our city together with this friendly, welcoming sport.

How many times in life do we have simple solutions to make a positive change? Not many, but with Pickleball, we do.

Susan Belleville [email protected] I wholeheartedly support Suzie Price’s agenda item #30 regarding enhancements and additions for improvements in the current pickleball facilities. I began playing this fabulously fun sport 4 years ago and would never have believed how much it now means to me. A sport that can be played by nearly anyone and is great exercise, and wonderful for couples and/or a single newbie that wants to learn and participate. I enjoy helping others learn as much as I enjoy playing those that are better than me and competitive! The sport has grown so much and I don’t believe we have the proper representation in Long Beach, especially compared to our size and those of the other beach cities nearby. The permanent striping of tennis courts, the conversion of the skate park would certainly bring us much delight and the ability to play consistently. Thank you for taking this item into consideration as I know you won’t regret it. I truly believe pickleball saves lives!🝠“🤩👝

Marty Belleville [email protected] Pickleball is the fastest growing outdoor sport in the US, and not just with seniors. Long Beach is the 4th largest city in California with one of the lowest per capita amount of dedicated Pickleball courts. Tennis is a dying sport amongst most of Americans and uses an inordinate amount of time and space for very few participants. Pickleball is a welcoming sport with terrific social advantages. Long Beach must strive to be a city where healthy outdoor activities are fervently promoted. Get our people out of their hones and away from their electronics and get them healthy and happy in this emerging sport.

Sadly, this park is smaller than the LBCC parking lot across the street.

And it's pretty much the only public park serving the most dense city council district in the city. When we talk about park equity, we speak about residents who live within walking distance of a park but we also speak about the quality of the infrastructure. MLK Park is a grassy area with a few trees and some outdated baseball diamonds. It's time to redesign and invest in a world-class park experience. But more importantly than its people-centered community design- this Council should commit to funding the vision plan's implementation. We're sick and tired of vision documents being mothballed and ignored while this Council spends billions on police gear and overtime pay.

I strongly support this motion to accept plans and provide funding for COMPLETE STREETS on Market Street. I've long advocated for the city to redesign the pedestrian experience and prioritize active transportation, including walking and biking. Bike lanes are proven to reduce car speeds and prevent road deaths and injuries. As you can see on the map, there are 8 schools within a half mile of Market Street, and thousands of residents. I look forward to a future where equitable streets are not the exception, but rather they're the rule.
