Subject: Public comment for Agenda Item #27 for 5/10 City Council meeting
-EXTERNAL-
Dear Council Members,
This item is a $30 million fossil fuel subsidy and far outweighs your meager investments into active transportation and complete streets. Unless and until road designs change, expenses like this merely perpetuate and, in fact, amplify traffic problems by inducing more drivers.
I strongly urge you to rebalance your spending toward public transit, active transportation, and complete streets rather than putting your finger on the scale in favor of more highway spending. All of your low-carbon transportation spending is funded through grants but on this, you're mindlessless approving $30m for asphalt.
Think bigger. Do better. The climate is changing now. We need to shift our behavior immediately.
