RE: Proposal to consolidate utilities
Council Members:
I am writing to you in support of the proposal to consolidate of the City’s gas utility with its water and sewer utilities, placing all utilities under a Board of Utilities Commissioners.
It makes total sense to make this consolidation, eliminating duplicative operations efforts and duties tasked by the gas utility and the water utility, and streamline the whole operation for the overall benefit to the residents (customers). If the responsive service already provided by the Water Department carries over into this consolidation, then the residents of Long Beach will be incredibly pleased with the result of this model. If many other major cities follow this model, surely Long Beach can follow suit.
City management can be freed up to focus on the many other areas of the city leaving the General
Manager and Commissioners to focus solely on our utilities service and maintenance. I do understand that many of the benefits of this proposal will play out more so over time, it does in fact seem like the right thing to do at the right time.
