Honorable Mayor and City Council
City of Long Beach
California

Dear Mayor and City Council Members,

Long Beach City College (LBCC) is writing to express our support and encourage you to vote in favor of item C-9 from the August 2, 2022 City Council Agenda. This item, recommended by the City Manager, would authorize the City to enter into a five-year lease for the North Long Beach Higher Education Center at 635 East South Street.

The development of the Center will provide much needed community-based resources that increase access to technology, job training, higher education, and small business and entrepreneurship resources. The location of the Center in North Long Beach fills a geographic gap in services for communities that have struggled with high unemployment rates, low educational attainment, and a lack of access to support services.

LBCC is identified as one of the partners who will activa te the space with programming and has committed to provide furniture and equipment for a computer lab. The goal of this initial phase of the project will be to expand technological access by building out a state-of-the-art computer lab, installing the needed technical and security infrastructure, and ensuring that the offerings in the center are disseminated to the community in diverse and engaging ways.

LBCC looks forward to continuing our partnership and working closely with the City, PGWIN, and the Long Beach Arts Council on this innovative partnership.

Sincerely,

Mike Muñoz, Ed. D.

Superintendent-President
Long Beach City College
