Travel Report: Intergovernmental Affairs Committee’s Report on June 21, 2023 , Travel to Sacramento, CA

On June 21, 2023 , Mayor Richardson and members of the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee of the Long Beach City Council traveled to Sacramento, CA. In addition to the City’s elected members, the delegation included staff from the elected offices; the City’s Government Affa irs Manager; and the City’s state legislative representative, Arc Strategies.

Meetings included Senator Lena Gonzalez, Senator Scott Wiener, Assemblymember Mike Gipson, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, and staff from Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal’s office, Governor Newsom’s office, and the State Lands Commission. Among the issues discussed were the following:

• The City’s legislative and funding priorities and bills proposed by state members; • The City’s request for additional support and resources to advance homelessness response and affordable housing;
• Support of legislation to decrease ambulance drop-off times; • The proposed Grow Long Beach Initiative and funding to save for oil well abandonment costs; and,
• Access to direct funding for City health jurisdictions to expand mental health resources.

The trip was productive in communicating the City’s priorities aligned with the 2023 State Legislative Agenda. We will continue to closely monitor issues of importance and work with the City’s government affairs staff and our state legislative representative to advance the City Council’s 2023 priorities.
