Subject: Fwd: PLEASE increase LB Shelter funding

-EXTERNAL-

> Dear Mayor Richardson and Long Beach City Council Members:
> I’m writing you this E-Mail to request that you increase funding for our city shelter. > As you well know, LBACS is inundated with cats and dogs to the point where they can no longer take in any lost, abandoned, or surrendered animals. Residents are leaving their animals in neighborhood streets, beaches, parks, etc.
>
> We are in a crisis. The shelter needs more funding to hire shelter officers in order to pursue backyard breeders who are a huge cause of this out of control and horrendous problem. The City needs to declare a state of emergency and our shelter also needs to provide free spay/neutering for the next six months or so to get a handle on this situation. There is a shelter number to call and report backyard breeders and unaltered animals four months and older per CA law. Therefore, we need these shelter officers to follow through on these unlawful practices, in other words, provide consequences and accountability. > Lastly, our city needs a massive Public Service Announcement campaign on billboards, buses, schools, etc educating residents of what one must do to be a responsible animal guardian which are sterilize, vaccinate, and microchip your animal companion.
>
> Our city will be hosting the next Olympic Games. We want the world to see what a model city we are and that includes caring for our animals. Mayor Rex, my husband and I voted and campaigned for you, please do us proudly!
> Thank you,
> Rita Santos-Oyama
