Subject: comments for the support of the vote on making October 7th, Ageism awareness day

-EXTERNAL-

My comments for the support of the vote on making October 7th, Ageism awareness day:

Today, city council members will vote on designating October 7th as Ageism Awareness Day. My comments are in full support of the vote. This vote and day offer us a moment to reflect on the contributions and honor that elders have on society. However, ageism devalues the lives and capacities of people 60 years of age and over, resulting in a lack of attention to the needs of older adults, especially to age in peace. Making October 7th Ageism Awareness Day offers a step forward in recognizing the problem of devaluing the lives of people due to their age and highlights the need to create and implement better systems of support, like housing, transportation, and health care, so that older adults in Long Beach can live a dignified and healthy life. By 2030, the population of California and Long Beach will have a majority older population therefore it is even more urgent that we identify pressing problems for this group and prioritize their needs in order to have supportive programs and policies in place.

Thank you,
Dr. Claudia Maria Lopez
