[email protected] Good evening Mr. Mayor and Council Members, I am a volunteer at Heart of Ida and Meals on Wheels. I also help older adults in my neighborhood (CD2). I see firsthand how ageism harms older adults in my community and beyond. It is imperative that we bring awareness to systemic issues that influence how we age in order to foster greater inclusivity, anti-ageism and equity. I fully support this recommendation and officially recognizing every 7th of October as Ageism Awareness day in the city of Long Beach.

[email protected] Recognizing October 7th as Ageism Awareness Day in Long Beach is a step to recognizing that we need to invite older adults to the table when thinking of policies. It will foster an environment where older adults may feel safe to contribute. This may be seen as just a day, but is is so much more than that. It is an assurance that we are moving forward and recognizing that ageism is a social problem that we need to address by calling it by its name.
The City of Long Beach can lead by example and inspire other communities to adopt practices that are pro-aging to promote a healthier environment and implement programs geared to benefit older adults– a community that has been overlooked.
Bringing awareness about ageism can create powerful connections for community building.

Dori Morper [email protected] As Program Coordinator for The Heart of Ida, a non-profit organization serving low- income seniors in Long Beach since 2008, I would like to voice my support for the draft resolution to recognize Ageism Awareness Day. The Heart of Ida envisions a community where every senior has the support they need to live independently and thrive, including feeling heard, appreciated, connected, cared for, and safe. We support Long Beach seniors in need with programs and services that sustain independence and connection within their community. It is up to all of us to ensure that older adults are respected and portrayed as capable, competent, effective, and valued in all areas of society. Preventing ageism in education, employment, housing, and healthcare will benefit all residents of Long Beach. 10/3/2023

[email protected] Thank you, City Council, for acknowledging ageism awareness. As a local aging services provider, we see how our clients are impacted by both day to day and systemic beliefs that devalue older adults. We support this recommendation and applaud all efforts that strengthen the respect, rights, dignity, and resources afforded to aging communities. – Miles McNeeley, Vice President of Elder Abuse Prevention, Wise & Healthy Aging

Myron Wollin [email protected] I support the establishment of Ageism Awareness Day in Long Beach. Too often Seniors are facing prejudice about their abilities simply because of their age, not their capabilities, whether it is in housing, medical care or elections to name a few areas.
Seniors face ridicule because of their age. It is time to end this prejudice. After all it is estimated by the Los Angeles Time that people over 60 will be one quarter of the population by 2030 and we need to involve them in our plans if we want to grow our state.

28. (23-1139) Recommendation to adopt
resolution authorizing City Manager, or designee,
to execute a contract and any necessary
documents including any necessary subsequent
amendments, with Pedal Movement, Inc., of Long
Beach, CA, for the operation and maintenance of
the City of Long Beach BikeShare Program in a
total amount not to exceed $2,493,608, for a
period of one year. (Citywide)

Erin Hoops [email protected] This is a great item! I'm excited about adding 900 bikes to our bike share fleet and getting hub installed in neighborhoods. I live near the 14th/15th St bike boulevard and having hubs in the neighborhood would be a complete game changer. I would use a bike share bike to get to the bus a lot faster. There are also destinations where I'm not comfortable locking my personal bike, so being able to use a city bike, would be great for those trips. Our bike share has a huge opportunity to provide bikes for transportation in addition to bikes for recreation and a huge part of that putting bikes near our homes. Thank you!!

Kurt Canfield [email protected] I support this recommendation to allow for the extension and expansion of the contract with Pedal Movement to allow for the managed bicycle share fleet to increase by 900 additional bike share bikes. This coupled with the installation of many new hubs throughout Long Beach will help close gaps in coverage and allow more people to have access to an affordable option to get around town and accomplish tasks, be it recreation, shopping, work, or errands.
Long Beach's commitment to its bike share program is commendable, and the recent adoption of the Bike Share For All program shows that it also has a commitment to equity. Strengthening our bike share network is one of the many ways that we save money in the long run because bikes are very cheap to maintain, they don't damage existing infrastructure, they produce no pollution, they make our residents healthier, they require minimal parking space, and they're fun. Not to mention we can recapture some of the cost through farebox.
