Honorable Mayor and City Council
City of Long Beach
California
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation to authorize the City Manager, or designee, to execute any necessary documents, including any amendments, with the Port of Long Beach to accept and expend funds for a sponsorship award in the amount of $2,000 for National Senior Center Month Scavenger Hunt events, for the period of September 1, 2026, through September 30, 2026; and,
Increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department by $2,000, offset by the sponsorship award. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
City Council authorization is requested for the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department (PRM) to accept and expend sponsorship award funds in the total amount of $2,000 from the Port of Long Beach (Port) for a community event. Through the Port’s Community Sponsorship Program (Sponsorship Program), local non-profits and governmental agencies may apply for sponsorship grants to support community functions and events. In September, PRM applied for sponsorship funding for the National Senior Center Month Scavenger Hunt events.
PRM was selected to receive $2,000 for the National Senior Center Month Scavenger Hunt events. In consideration of the sponsorship, the Port will host tables at the events to educate the public about Port operations, the role it plays in national and international trade, and recreational opportunities in the tidelands and submerged lands. Additionally, PRM will feature the Port of Long Beach’s logo on promotional items, including flyers, brochures, and event banners. The sponsorship program enhances the events’ activities and is consistent with the Parks Make Long Beach: PRM Strategic Plan for expanding community engagement and older adult goals by providing meaningful recreational programming and events aimed at increasing community participation throughout the city.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Millicent Usoro on September 15, 2026 and by Budget Analysis Officer Greg Sorensen on September 17, 2026.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on October 6, 2026, to enable the execution of the required documents.

FISCAL IMPACT
The sponsorship award from the Port of Long Beach is unbudgeted. Therefore, an appropriation increase is requested in the amount of $2,000 in the General Fund Group in the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department. The sponsorship award has no match requirement. This recommendation has no staffing impact beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and is consistent with existing City Council priorities. The requested action will result in a positive impact on jobs, although the exact number is unknown at this time.
SUGGESTED ACTION:
Approve recommendation.
Respectfully submitted,
Stephen P. Scott
