Subject: City Council Resolution Denouncing the Hamas Attacks Against Israel Adoption of a resolution denouncing the Hamas attack against Israel by the City Council is appropriate, and the right thing to do by all honorable people.

The attack of October 7 was a depravity that can not be forgiven or forgotten. Honorable people can distinguish the moral difference between the purposeful, barbaric murder of innocents, and the accidental death of innocents during a defense of family and home.

Many Americans and much of the press are clearly ignorant of the reality of life in Gaza and Israel that led to the inhuman attack of Oct 7. I urge open-minded people who seek the truth to listen to the voice of Sophia Salem Khalifa, a Muslim Arab woman, who grew up in poverty in Israel, earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Tel Aviv University, and an MBA from Stanford. Her interview below is enlightening (a YouTube Interview).

Subject: [External Sender]PUBLIC COMMENT AGENDA ITEM #1 -12/11/2023 Mayor Weinberg, Vice-Mayor Dailey, and Councilmembers Fligor, Lee Eng, and Meadows,

Thank you to the Mayor for drafting this document. I am sure it was difficult to get it all down. I hereby submit my comments and reactions to the proposed resolution as drafted.

Commentary on RECITALS Section:

1 st Whereas: Please reconsider the use of the underlined words in this clause:
“…a heinous act of terrorism, whose primary intention was to commit atrocities on noncombatants, and which terrorist acts were motivated by anti-Semitism.”

We should not speak to intentions and motivations as these words imply the City of Los Altos/City Council have inside knowledge of what Hamas operatives were thinking and, in general, re-open a debate in an area where the Council has contestable (insufficient) credentials. It also rests on a conflation of anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism and they are not the same. As background, please refer to this Jewish source on this very topic: https://jewishcurrents.org/the-hamasattacks-and-israeli-response-an-explainer#were-hamass-attacks-motivated-by-antisemitism

Instead, I think your initial recital should focus solely on identifying the relevant parties and the specific incident of Oct

7. I suggest (changes in italics):

“WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023, Hamas committed a heinous act of terrorism, committing atrocities on noncombatants, and which terrorist acts elicited a large-scale military response from Israel.”

9 Agenda Item 2.
2 2
nd Whereas: if Council’s intention in this recital is to memorialize the gist of the community’s expressions during the Nov 14 Council meeting, which I believe is the noly for all Los Altans to feel that they were heard, then your words absolutely do NOT do that. On October 10, it may have been suitable to only talk of the Oct 7 attack. However, at this meeting, the community concern was altogether more expansive and more close to home; it was also much more varied in scope, with expressions along a wide variety of opinions. In representing the proceedings and tone of that meeting, you must acknowledge the gist of the diverse viewpoints and considerations that were expressed.

I suggest:

“WHEREAS, at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Los Altos held on November 14, 2023, members of the City Council and members of the public who spoke during public comment condemned Hamas’ acts of terror and its taking of more than two-hundred hostages, expressed their opinions about the continued large-scale Israeli military response, the continuing holding of hostages by Hamas, the continued displacement of Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank, and the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and reported fears of increased antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other dehumanizing behaviors against themselves and community members here at home, and also expressed hopes for unity and peace, and wanted their friends, family, and especially their children to live free from fear here in Los Altos;”

3 rd Whereas: I find this clause problematic because it implies that no one in our community has experienced antiSemitism or Islamophobia before Oct 7. I hope you do not believe this is true, because it is not. If you want this clause to recognize that both forms of discrimination intensified after Oct 7, that’s fair. I just think it is important we not paint an unrealistic picture of life here.

I suggest:

“WHEREAS, in the aftermath of October 7, 2023, the Los Altos City Council recognizes that members of the Los Altos community have experienced intensified levels of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia;”

4 th Whereas: The focus of this recital, as written, is about religious beliefs. I think its scope should be expanded because this whole situation encompasses discrimination and division about many more identifying attributes than religion; it includes ideologies about governance, self-determination, history, affiliation, and identity. I capture all these considerations into what defines a people’s “culture.” Moreover, it is not only those Los Altans who identify as Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian, or Muslim that are experiencing increased stress. Indeed, even Los Altans outside the above demographics are experiencing dismissal, isolation, criticism, and worse because of their fidelity to their friends inside the above demographics.

I suggest:

10 Agenda Item 2.
3 “WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Los Altos recognizes and affirms all of its residents’ right to live in safety, without fear of violence, intimidation, or threat, based on their religious beliefs, how they choose to express those beliefs, their cultural identities, or their community affiliations;

6 th Whereas: I do not understand what this clause intends to express. Why is the AAPI community being brought into this resolution?

I Propose a new closing recital:

I believe Council should set expectations for the community, just as it set expectations for itself in reiterating Resolution 2017-07’s Bullet 5. This resolution should aim to set the highest standards of behavior from its community members.

Good leaders talk directly to their constituents.

I suggest:

“WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Los Altos expects all Los Altans to treat one another with humanity, dignity, empathy, and respect at all times, but especially when one disagrees with another;”

Commentary on NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED Section:

Verb tense error in this section:

Since this section declares the active parties as the (1) City and (2) the Council (two parties), all subsequent paragraphs must use Denounce vs Denounces, Recognize vs Recognizes, etc. If you want to leave the resolving clauses as is, then change the parties as follows (though I think it is more effective to change the verb tenses in each clause):

“NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Los Altos hereby declares that the City of Los Altos:

1. Denounces…

2. Affirms…”
Specific feedback on each resolution clause:

11 Agenda Item 2.
4 Resolution 1: remove “antisemitic [sic]” for reasons cited in the recital section above.

Resolution 2: Add “culture” as a couplet to faith since this is not all about faith as explained in the recital section above.

Resolution 4: replace “faith” with “faith, culture, and opinions.”

Resolution 6: additionally say “all acts of hate speech, exclusion,…<rest of list>”

Resolution 7: say “religious and cultural beliefs”

Add a Resolution 10: “Expects all members of the Los Altos Community to abide by the legal limits on their speech and actions including, but not limited to, obeying all laws and municipal codes of conduct, proper posting of information, art, opinions, and other expressions, obtaining required permits for assembly and other protest or advocacy activities, and adhering to norms and procedures for participating in legislative and community meetings.

I would swap Resolution 10 and 9 because your current Resolution 9 is excellent and reads very well as the closing resolution.

Thank you for your consideration,
Jeanine Valadez

Subject: public comment on item 1 on the December 11 agenda The Hamas attacks against Israel were an atrocity. It is difficult for me to discuss terrorism without using inappropriate la nguage. I was in New York on 9/11, so I have firsthand knowledge regarding how awful the indiscriminate killing of innocent noncombatants can be. I was close enough to the World Trade Center site to smell the unpleasant odor of burnt flesh mixed with jet fuel that was present after the atrocity.

That said, there is no reason beyond stupid virtue signaling for the Los Altos City Council to waste time and effort to stat e the obvious. It is not Council's place to opine on foreign events. regardless of how awful these events might be. There are enough issues in governing this town without wasting time on irreverent issues.

Council needs to stay in its lane and deal with City issues.

Subject: City Council adoption of a resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel Members of the Los Altos City Council,
I strongly encourage you to adopt the resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists launched an attack that killed 1,200 innocent people in Israel, including 35 Americans. It was a brutal and horrific massacre. Babies and Holocaust survivors were killed. Young people who were simply attending a concert were shot dead. In connection with this terror attack, Hamas raped and mutilated women and girls. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67629181 While I abhor the death of Palestinian civilians, the actions of Hamas cannot be excused.

Thank you ,

Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I want to thank you for taking a stand against antisemitism and condemning the terrible attacks by Hamas. Your courage in opposing this hate sends a strong message to our community.

The escalating antisemitism is deeply concerning, particularly seeing the hate Jewish students encounter at college campuses. It's troubling to witness antisemitism now seeping into our schools. I trust our leaders to address these incidents decisively and responsibly.

Your bravery in standing against these terrible acts driven by hate shows real leadership. It makes our city a safer place for everyone. By making sure we all live without fear, you're showing that inclusivity and protection matter to our community.

Los Altos City Council -
I’m Mark Balch, a long-time area resident.

I ask you to approve the resolution standing up to antisemitism, islamophobia, and the Hamas attacks of October 7, and reaffirming every person's right to safety in our community. Now is the time for unqualified condemnation of Hamas’ barbarism.

Jews have lived in Israel for thousands of years. We were subjugated by the Romans, the Ottomans, and the British Empire. When Hamas keeps coming back year after year trying to kill us, this is the tragic outcome. Hamas terrorists bragged on social media with gruesome pictures and videos of their atrocities.

President Biden has courage to support the Jewish people. Governor Newsom too. Senator Alex Padilla. Representative Anna Eshoo. State Senator Scott Weiner. State Senator Josh Becker. Assemblyman Marc Berman. The MVLA school district. And many more.

Please, recognize and stand up against evil. I ask for your support. Thank you.

Furthermore, the escalating antisemitic activities within U.S. colleges and universities, as tracked by government agencies and watchdogs, paint a deeply concerning picture. The Anti-Defamation League reported a distressing 41% spike in such incidents in 2022 compared to the previous year, affecting more than 130 schools.

These distressing statistics are not just numbers; they represent the lived experiences of individuals within our community.

In the face of such distressing trends, your resolution stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. Subject: PUBLIC COMMENT - AGENDA ITEM 01 - 12/11/2023 Support City Council adoption of a resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel
Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I am writing to convey my heartfelt appreciation for your forthcoming resolution denouncing antisemitism and strongly condemning the atrocious terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Your unwavering commitment to combating such acts of violence and hatred is deeply reassuring, especially in light of the disconcerting rise in antisemitic incidents affecting our community and educational institutions.

The recent data from the FBI depicting an almost 400 percent surge in reported incidents of harassment, vandalism, and assault against jews since October 7, 2023, is deeply troubling. Moreover, the escalating instances of antisemitism within our schools and colleges across the nation paint an alarming picture.

Disturbing events in our community, such as students chanting "from the river to the sea," advocating for the eradication of Israel, and another incident where antisemitic comments and gestures targeted jewish students are profoundly distressing.

These distressing incidents reflect a larger concerning trend. The unsettling narratives emerging from our educational institutions speak volumes about the challenges faced by Jewish students. Reports detailing derogatory chants, exclusion from clubs based on faith, and acts of vandalism, such as swastikas carved into walls, paint a harrowing picture of the discrimination and intimidation faced by our youth.

Your resolution holds immense significance in this context. Your resolute stance against antisemitism and your commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals within our community serve as a beacon of hope. It reaffirms the values of unity, respect, and empathy, emphasizing the imperative need for an environment where every individual can freely express their beliefs without fear or discrimination.

Your dedication in safeguarding the rights and safety of every member of our community, especially in the face of these distressing incidents, is commendable and deeply appreciated. Your resolution signifies a crucial step in preserving the inclusive and secure nature of our community.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to denounce antisemitism and uphold the values that define our city.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Subject: [External Sender]12/10/23 City Council Meeting - Resolution Mayor, Vice-Mayor & Councilmembers,
I appreciate you listening to the concerns of the public regarding this Resolution that is being presented before the council, as it is a difficult issue for many people in the community. While I thank Mayor Weinberg for creating a more nuanced stance than what was originally being discussed, there are a few points where I feel this could be improved:

1. WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023, Hamas committed a heinous act of terrorism against Israelis, including civilians; whose primary intention was to commit atrocities on noncombatants, and which terrorist acts were motivated by anti-Semitism;
Why are we speaking on the intentions and motivations of Hamas? Does the City Council have inside knowledge of Hamas operatives' thinking? We can speak to the outcomes - the hostages that were taken, and that atrocities were committed on civilians. But there is a great deal of evidence that indicates that this attack was not motivated by antisemitism, but as a rebellion to decades of opression, apartheid and taking of lands. See https://jewishcurrents.org/thehamas-attacks-and-israeli-response-an-explainer#were-hamass-attacks-motivated-by-antisemitism for reference. City council should not be putting forth motivations and intentions for global events.

2. WHEREAS, at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Los Altos held on November 14, 2023, members of the City Council and members of the public who spoke during public comment condemned Hamas’ acts of terror and its taking of more than two-hundred hostages; members of the public also condemned the disproportionate response by the Israeli government that has killed over 16,000 Palestinians, including over 7,000 children, and displaced over 1 million civilians.

There was significant acknowledgement and condemnation of the collective punishment and killings in Gaza and the West Bank from people of diverse religions and ethnicities. Why has that been erased? If this statement is talking about what took place at the city council meeting, then it should reflect it accurately.

3. There is a focus on anti-semitism and Islamophobia, and while it is important and necessary to condemn both, there is much hate being expressed for the Palestinian-American ethnic community as well, who are Christian as well as Muslim. This is not due to their religious identity, but their ethnicity. So this should be absolutely be included in the statements against hate.

Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration,
Renee Rashid

Subject: condemn Hamas
City Council.
thank you for taking this moment in History to stand up and be on the right side of history.

Elie Wiesel wrote: "what hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor, but the silence of the bystander." I am proud that you are not standing by and taking this stand against the horror of the HAMAS raid of October 7th.

On October 7, HAMS initiated an unprecedented gruesome attack of the civilian residents of Southern Israel. The beheaded 40 babies and toddlers. They Put one baby in a hot oven. They burned homes with residents inside. Hamas killed over 1,200 innocent civilians. This number is growing as forensic anthropologist are identifying bodies beyond recognition. Hamas raped women of ALL ages, gleefully posting live videos of the action. The killed the women and paraded naked women in the streets of Gaza as trophies. Image these were your daughters, mothers, sisters and loved ones.

They kidnapped 240 civilian hostages. Children from ages 10 months ... and seniors with medical issues (ages 85+). Kidnapped Civilians. There has been a universal cry for the release of these innocent hostages and there was a brief exchange for 3 criminals per hostage. There are sill 136 hostages in captivity. Countless families broken as they wait for news as to the life and health of the their family members.

I ask you to Condem HAMAS, a terror organization, recognized by the US government as a terror organization since 1997 (along with Al Qa'ida, Boko Haram, Isis, https://www.state.gov/foreignterrorist-organizations/ It is really easy to condem a group designated as a terror organization by the US State Department.

Please do Condemn HAMAS. Note: this has nothing to do with the innocent civilian residents of GAZA. THis is ony about HAMAS>

It served as a beacon of hope and solidarity, reminding us of the importance of local leadership in promoting understanding and harmony.

Our community is in a precarious state. The Jewish and Israeli population in Los Altos currently experiences a sense of isolation and vulnerability. We watch with increasing anxiety as anti-Semitism rises across the United States, causing distress and fear within our community. It is at times like these that we turn to our community leaders, such as yourselves, as the moral compass to guide our community through these tumultuous times.

Your collective voice holds tremendous power. A clear and unequivocal resolution from our city's leadership, condemning acts of terrorism and, importantly, expressing a resolute stance against anti-Semitism and hatred, can have a profound impact. It would not only bolster the sense of belonging of the Jewish and Israeli community in Los Altos but also help in stemming the tide of anti-Semitic incidents that have become all too common.

We wholeheartedly support the resolution proposed in the agenda for the City Council meeting on 12/11/2023, condemning Hamas terrorist acts and emphasizing the importance of eradicating anti-Semitism and promoting inclusivity in our community. Such a resolution would send a powerful message of unity, demonstrating that our city stands firmly against hate, intolerance, and violence.

In closing, we earnestly hope that you, our esteemed Mayor and City Council, will consider our request and take action to issue an official statement. Your support in this matter would not only provide solace to our community but also contribute to a stronger, more harmonious Los Altos.

Thank you for your time and attention. We remain hopeful for a positive response to our request and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts in making Los Altos a place of inclusivity and mutual respect for all.

Dear Mayor and Council Members
As somebody who has sat helplessly by over the years observing the increase in Jew hatred in our society, taking a clear moral stance to condemn Hamas unfortunately is necessary to affirm basic humanity and push back against terror.

What threatens the Jews, will threaten us all.

I understand that social justice the excuse to excuse terrorism, but the tactics of terrorism if justified abroad, will become to norm to force civil issues here at home in America, unless our cities take a stand against Hamas terrorism in clear and no uncertain terms.

The chants of the pro-Hamas crowd is that they want their way by any means necessary. Hamas is not pro Palestinian either, they just pretend to be . They are pro-hatred and pro-terror and will continue methods of fear and violence to achieve whatever they want anywhere in the world, including Palo Alto. Condemn Hamas to say that terror to force ones will should not be excused, rationalized, or normalized and has no home here.

Please take a stand for safety, decency, and civilized conduct here at home by making a statement against Hamas terror abroad. The lives and freedom you preserve will be for everybody, not just the Jewish community.

Sincerely,

Subject: Public Comments for City Council Special Meeting (December 11, 2023) Dear council members,
I'd like to express my support for the proposed resolution which denounces Hamas' heinous and antisemitic attack on 10/7, which spawned a surge in antisemitism sentiment throughout the country, and particularly in our community.

The resolution rightfully denounces the most horrific act of antisemitism since the Holocaust against Jews during World War II. It does not, and should not, address the political situation in the Middle East. We should not be talking about a barbaric terrorist attack in "context" of a political situation, as that would imply the support for such an act under certain circumstances.

Thank you for standing by the Israeli and Jewish community in these dark times, and for not staying silent. I appreciate the call for all members of the community to respect each other and protect each other's sense of physical and emotional security.

Thank you,

Subject: PUBLIC COMMENT - AGENDA ITEM 01 - 12/11/2023 Resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel
Dear Mayor and Esteemed Council Members,
We want to express our appreciation for your vote to support a resolution denouncing Hamas attacks against Israel. This statement deeply resonated with the Jewish and Israeli residents of our community, serving as a source of hope and unity during these trying times.

We also wish to share our concerns about the challenges our community currently faces. The Jewish and Israeli population in Los Altos is feeling isolated and vulnerable as anti-Semitism continues to rise across the United States, causing distress and fear. During such times, we look to our community leaders, like yourselves, to provide guidance and leadership.

Your collective voice holds significant influence. A clear and unwavering resolution from our city's leadership, condemning acts of terrorism, and firmly denouncing anti-Semitism and hatred, can have a profound impact.

Such a statement would not only strengthen the sense of belonging within the Jewish and Israeli community in Los Altos but also play a crucial role in combating the surge of anti-Semitic incidents.

We wholeheartedly support the resolution proposed in the agenda for the City Council meeting on 12/11/2023, condemning Hamas terrorist acts and emphasizing the importance of eradicating anti-Semitism and promoting inclusivity in our community. This resolution would send a powerful message of unity, affirming that our city stands united against hate, intolerance, and violence.

We sincerely hope that you, our esteemed Mayor and City Council, will give thoughtful consideration to our request and vote in support of this resolution. Your support in this matter would provide comfort to our community and contribute to a stronger, more harmonious Los Altos.

Thank you for your time and attention. We remain hopeful for a positive response to our request and eagerly look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to make Los Altos a place of inclusivity and mutual respect for all.

Sincerely,

Subject: Supporting resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel Dear Esteemed Council Members,
I am writing to express my unwavering support for the proposed resolution condemning the vile and antisemitic assault orchestrated by Hamas on 10/7. The repercussions of this heinous act have cast a dark shadow over our community, intensifying the surge of antisemitism that has gripped our nation.

The resolution, with its unambiguous denouncement, addresses a critical juncture in history—a moment that echoes the darkest chapters of antisemitism, reminiscent of the Holocaust during World War II. It stands as a testament to our commitment to resolutely oppose acts of terror that threaten the very fabric of our society.

I commend the resolution for wisely refraining from entangling itself in the labyrinth of Middle Eastern politics.

It rightly separates the abhorrent violence we condemn from the complex geopolitical landscape. This approach sends a clear message that acts of terrorism should never find refuge in political discourse.

In these trying times, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the council for standing as a beacon of support for the Israeli and Jewish community. Thank you for your resolute stance and your call for unity to preserve the physical and emotional well-being of our community.

I'm writing to express my support for the resolution addressing the recent antisemitic attack by Hamas on 10/7.

The community has felt the impact, and denouncing such actions is crucial.

The resolution rightly condemns the act without delving into complex Middle East politics, which I find commendable. Focusing on condemning terrorism without getting into intricate political details sends a clear message.

I appreciate the council's commitment to standing by the Israeli and Jewish community during these challenging times. Your call for unity and the preservation of our community's well-being is valued.

Dear Council Members,
My brother, Eli and I, are 6th and 5th graders at Oak Elementary. Our parents told us about the resolution and we are writing to say we really think this resolution about the antisemitic attack by Hamas on 10/7 is important.

It's been kinda scary with more hate, and the resolution is like saying a big 'no' to that.

We know a lot of people say different things about Israel and argue about it, including some kids at school. It's scary to hear that, but the resolution does not talk about that. It talks about terrorism being bad, which we totally get. We think everyone should get it.

Thanks to the council for being there for the Israeli and Jewish community. It's important for us to stick together and feel safe.

Subject: Comments on Special Resolution regarding Anti-Semitism and Hamas As a citizen of Los Altos, I do not think it is in the purview of the Los Altos City Council to take a stand on international events. As much as I detest Hamas and what they did, the City Council’s responsibility is to the city of Los Altos. If you take a stand on actions in Israel/Gaza, then why don’t you take a stand on Ukraine/Russia? How about China and Tibet and China and the Uyghurs? How about Myanmar and the Rohingya? It makes sense for the City Council to take a stand against hate and hate speech in all its forms and reiterate that Los Altos is a safe space for all people. At this time calling out anti-semitism and Islamophobia makes sense. Weighing in on international events sets a bad precedent for the future. The City Council needs to stay focused on the City.

I urge the City to change the language of the resolution to focus on the issue facing the city: Take a stand against hate speech, anti- semitism and Islamophobia and skip the part about taking a stand on international issues.

Subject: PUBLIC COMMENT - AGENDA ITEM 01 - 12/11/2023 Support City Council adoption of a resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel
Dear Mayor and Council Members:

I suggest that you step back and do 3 things before you consider this resolution:

1. Read the Robbie Gringras blog in the Times of Israel (it's short): Can we talk? Or is it too soon?

2. Listen to two short videos on his website and evaluate what you want to accomplish when you pass this resolution
He also has a two videos: https://youtu.be/3as19jzdGVM (a little over two minutes) and three types of discussions (or aguments) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQOaaiXBQ9Q (4 minutes).

Can we talk? Or is it too soon?
From the blog of Robbie Gringras at The Times of Israel He has an idea of a way to test our readiness to have a discussion. It’s not a moral test, it’s an emotional test. When is my heart ready to listen to, even be curious about, the views of someone who disagrees with me about Israel, Hamas and Gaza? Here is the test. If both you and your interlocutor were to agree with these two statements, we reckon you might be emotionally ready for a healthy argument:

A. I cannot accept the actions of Hamas on 7th October, in deliberately attacking civilians of all ages, murdering over a thousand and kidnapping some two hundred people.

B. I cannot accept the destruction of Gazan homes, the collective punishment of Gazan civilians, and the deaths of thousands of Gazan civilians as “collateral damage”.

I'm not in favor of dealing with international issues at a municipal level, but I am in favor of people feeling safe in a community and having discussions where we learn from one another to fill in gaps in our knowledge.

Sincerely,
Ted Schachter

Sincerely,
Irina Zinman and Ronen Zinman

Subject: PUBLIC COMMENT - AGENDA ITEM 01 - 12/11/2023 Support City Council adoption of a resolution denouncing the Hamas attacks against Israel
Dear Honorable Mayor Weinberg, Honorable Vice Mayor Daily, and Honorable Council Members, I am writing to convey my heartfelt appreciation for your forthcoming resolution denouncing antisemitism and strongly condemning the atrocious terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Your unwavering commitment to combating such acts of violence and hatred makes an extremely important statement.

The recent data from the FBI depicting an almost 400 percent surge in reported incidents of harassment, vandalism, and assault against Jews since October 7, 2023, is deeply troubling. Moreover, the escalating instances of antisemitism within our local high schools and in colleges across the nation paint an alarming picture. Disturbing events in our community, such as students chanting "from the river to the sea," advocating for the eradication of Israel, and another incident where antisemitic comments and gestures targeted Jewish students are profoundly distressing.

Your resolution holds immense significance in this context. Your resolute stance against antisemitism and your commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals within our community serve as a beacon of hope. It reaffirms the values of unity, respect, and empathy, emphasizing the imperative need for an environment where every American can freely express their beliefs without fear or discrimination.

Your dedication in safeguarding the rights and safety of every member of our community, especially in the face of these distressing incidents, is commendable and deeply appreciated. Your resolution signifies a crucial step in preserving the inclusive and secure nature of our community.

Thank you for your leadership and unwavering commitment to denounce antisemitism and uphold the values that define our wonderful city.

Subject: Approve Resolution against antisemitism
Dear Mayor and Esteemed Council Members,
I want to express my appreciation for your vote to support the resolution denouncing antisemitism. Taking a stance is really crucial in these difficult days.

I would like to share with you a few recent examples of antisemitic incidents from the past 2 months that happened at my sons’ Los Altos schools, which amplifies the need for a resolution.  At Egan Middle School, a student told a Jewish student that all Jews should be killed.  Nazi pictures were published on kids social media in Egan  There were swasitikas at Los Altos High.
 A student was called by another LAHS student "Dirty Jew, Heil".  In a class, where the subject was related to Judaism, one of the students drew a swastika on a notebook of a Jewish student.
 On Oct 18, a Pro-Palestinian walkout was organized by LAHS students were some of the signs held by the students as they walked both through campus and off campus had the slogan "From the river to the sea" which is calling for the annihilation of Israel.  During a school sport activity, each student shared with the team where they were born. A student didn’t feel safe saying Israel as some of the students from the team participated in the Pro Palestinian Rally.
 The LAHS Altos chapter of the Junior State of America (JSA) received a series of threatening messages in response to their planned panel on the Israel-Hamas war originally planned for Nov 15, set to feature several speakers who aimed to address the misinformation circulating about the war. see link- https://lahstalon.org/junior-state-of-america-chapter-receivers-of-threat-over-israel-hamaspanel/. As a result the panel was cancelled.

These incidents were brought to my attention by other parents and my sons. There might be others.

Thank you for your attention. We look forward to your approval of the resolution proposed in the agenda for the City Council meeting on 12/11/2023.

Subject: Support council adoption of resolution condemning Hamas Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I am writing to convey my heartfelt appreciation for your forthcoming resolution denouncing antisemitism and strongly condemning the atrocious terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Dear Mayor and Council Members,
Thank you for stepping up to denounce antisemitism and Islamophobia, and to firmly condemn the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Your unwavering commitment to standing against such acts of violence and hate sets a powerful example for our community.

It is possible to support Israel's right to exist and defend itself, and Palestinians' right to self-determination. It takes nuanced thinking and good leadership to give voice to that.

The one-sided voices we hear most often are leading to intolerance and violence against Jews and Muslims in our country as a whole, and close to home in our own communities.

Your leadership is very much needed now.

Thank you for supporting a resolution that will keep all of our citizens safe from these and other expressions of hatred. It is a crucial step in helping our community feel safe.
