TOWN OF LOS ALTOS HILLS October 15, 2026
Staff Report to the City Council
SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR THE JOINT
VOLUNTEER AWARDS COMMITTEE (JVAC) AND THE PROPOSED
DECEMBER 4, 2026 ANNUAL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION EVENT
FROM: Arika Birdsong-Miller, City Clerk
RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council should:
Staff recommends that the City Council discuss and provide direction regarding the Town's support for the proposed December 4, 2026 Joint Volunteer Awards Committee (JVAC) Annual Volunteer Recognition Event.
BACKGROUND:
The Joint Volunteer Awards Committee (JVAC) has historically been a collaborative effort between the Town of Los Altos Hills and the City of Los Altos to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions through volunteer service to their communities.
The Committee has traditionally organized an annual recognition event to celebrate these contributions and acknowledge the dedication of community volunteers.
DISCUSSION:
At its October 5, 2026 meeting, JVAC considered a motion to proceed with the Annual Volunteer Recognition Event scheduled for December 4, 2026. The motion received three votes in favor and two votes opposed, with Council Member Stanley Mok abstaining.
The City of Los Altos has communicated that it will not participate in the 2026 event.
Given the Committee's expressed interest in proceeding with the event and the City of Los Altos' decision not to participate, staff is bringing this matter before the Town Council to determine whether the Town wishes to continue supporting the event this year.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Town has historically contributed $1,500 annually in support of JVAC's volunteer recognition efforts. Should the Council wish to support the 2026 event, the Town could continue its customary $1,500 contribution. No additional funding is requested at this time.
