Here's a polished and professional version of your email:
Dear Members of the Los Banos City Council,
I am writing regarding the proposal to reduce the time allotted for public comment during City Council meetings. I respectfully urge the Council to reconsider this change and maintain the current five-minute speaking limit.
Public comment is one of the most important ways residents can engage with their local government and provide meaningful feedback on issues affecting our community. The Council's role includes listening to constituents, understanding their concerns, and considering diverse perspectives before making decisions.
In my experience attending meetings, public comment periods are rarely overwhelmed with large numbers of speakers. Given that relatively few residents come forward to address the Council, there does not appear to be a pressing need to reduce speaking time.
Five minutes already provides only a limited opportunity for residents to present their thoughts clearly, respectfully, and in a well-organized manner. Reducing that time further may discourage participation and make it more difficult for community members to adequately express their viewpoints.
If meetings consistently had a large number of speakers each week, reducing the time might be understandable to ensure efficient meeting management. However, that does not appear to be the current situation. Maintaining the existing five-minute limit would continue to support transparency, civic engagement, and productive communication between the Council and the residents you serve.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and service to our community. I respectfully ask that you preserve the current five-minute public comment period so residents can continue to provide thoughtful and meaningful input to the Council.
Sincerely,
Maria Phillips
Los Banos Resident
