6 CITY COUNCIL ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
Council Member Flores expressed appreciation to both of Lynwood's women council members. He then addressed his concerns regarding the Sherriff's Department performance in the community and requested that law enforcement members be cognizant of how the public perceives idle activity. He noted that the physical condition of the Sherriff's station depicts an abandoned space as there were clothes and papers throughout the lobby and it clearly was not clean. He mentioned that the interaction with staff was not at a good customer service level that it should be and requested attention to these things as we expect a better presentation for our residents.
Council Member Santana indicated that she participated in the homeless count and that there was a great turnout for the task but she felt a night count may not really be accurate as it impacts the ability to visually see each and every homeless individual and would like suggest a consideration for the count to be conducted during daylight hours. She also stated that there was a tree planting event, skate park event and hazard waste household cleanup event that provided a very productive weekend and asserted that the community is ready to participate in local events. Council Member Santana inquired if her colleagues would be able to consider a campaign that was brought to her attention by a Lynwood student, Mr. Lynwood - Axle Perez and that he has provided materials for our review that involves a "Be Kind" month campaign in the month of April. She noted the intent to facilitate some large 4 to 5 foot wooden letters on the front lawn that would say "BE KIND". She indicated that April is "Children's Month" and "Special Needs Month" is in April and also we are holding a health event in April and stated that she feels "Be Kind" campaign would bolster moral in our community.
Council Member Soto thanked staff for their work efforts in the homeless count activity, skate park event, and tree planting event. She thanked her colleagues for their efforts to bring these types of events to the community that benefits all the residents. She requested City Manager Hernandez to consider the need for more staff to help with weekend events for our kids and our community. She indicated that she received an update from staff regarding the consideration of different traffic mitigation measures along Imperial Highway to keep our residents and students safe.
Mayor Pro Tern Solache applauded the success of the scheduled events and noted that 100 of the 1,000 trees had been planted and that there are 900 more trees to be planted. He indicated that the Hazard Household Waste collection event was in collaboration with the Sanitation Division and Supervisor Janice Hahn's office and noted that approximately 75 cars went through the drop off lanes during the first hour with old items that will not end up in our alleys and random corner dumping.
Mayor Casanova indicated that residents have expressed thanks for resolving the flooding issues but also noted that some of the newly planted trees have died. He requested to let the tree people know about this and suggested replanting efforts be
considered. He also noted the need to promote the City's events with more advertising flyers and distribution as he wants to achieve more community participation and would consideration more collaboration with the School District to promote the local events. He mentioned events for this week that included a Community Clean- up and Mayor's Adopt a Senior program scheduled for Saturday 3/5/22, 8 am to 10-30 am at the corner at Walnut and Ernestine and he again expressed the he would like to see more community involvement and that more advertising would contribute to more participation.
