CITY COUNCIL ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
Council Member Flores expressed his concern for followed up details on staff's response in addressing a resident's request for installation of stop signs to be provided at an intersection. He also mentioned the City's 5K Run coming up this weekend and indicated his support for the event.
He acknowledged the residents' comments expressed at this meeting and affirmed that all members of the City Council have respectfully listened and that the Council as a group and also on an individual member basis will continue to listen to the community no matter the subject content; however, he stressed the importance of
kindness and an approach that should be in the best interest for the community and not be mean spirited.
He noted that he heard many things today like "lining my pockets", "insurrection", "out to get that money", and that someone even said that this ordinance was an adopted ordinance already; which is all very untrue. Council Member Flores indicated that he certainly did not get involved as a council member for some crazy pay, but rather revealed he ran for City Council out of frustration in that things were not moving at a sufficient pace to meet the needs of our community; particularly in his personal observation that the City parks needed more consideration and felt his participation in local government would contribute to developing progress toward much needed park improvements. He then suggested that residents request available documents that would clarify many concerns and enable the community to feel secure that the City Council is conducting City business that is the best for our community. He emphasized the success of good communications and engagement with truths as super important components to achieve movement forward and highly recommended researching the facts before making public comments.
Council Member Flores added to the Mayor's comments regarding the recent conferences that council members attended in that people are complementing the City of Lynwood as a forward moving progressive community with strong leadership and stated that people want to come to do business here in Lynwood. He asserted that people are listening to us, wanting to do business with us, wanting to entertain us in meetings as we strive to serve our community with emotional intelligence. He said that it is a shame that one of the comments about "lining pockets" was made by the same person who voted for an increase in their salary when they served in City Council.
In his closing remark, Council Member Flores again confirmed council members are open for conversations and are easy to reach and indicated he is on Instagram and would be happy to have conversations with anyone regarding their concerns.
Mayor Pro Tern Solache acknowledged and thanked the thousands of supporters who elected him in 2018 and 2013. He also confirmed his respect for every single speaker who came forward to express comments at this meeting and professed his full attention to those comments even though not agreeing one hundred percent.
He noted that when he was Mayor he would let people know that whatever is said at the dais is public opinion and stated that if residents have concerns the City's official records are held at the City Clerk's office for review, which comes in-line with Council Member Flores' advice to request available documents that would clarify many concerns and enable the community to feel secure that the City Council is conducting City business that is the best for our community. He also reconfirmed the responsibility to continue to listen to the community whether agreeing or disagreeing.
8 Mayor Pro Tern Solache explained that attending Lynwood community events and functions allows the ability to connect with the community, hear their concerns and share words and stated he will continue to be at those activities to listen to the residents of Lynwood and ensure that staff and Council will work together as a team to deliver results for the residents and address their concerns, to trim the trees, to repair the streets and sidewalks and stay focused to ensure public safety by working closely with the Fire Chief and Sherriff's Department law enforcement officers under Captain Torres. He admitted that he is not able to make every single person happy, but voiced the objective to be respectful of anyone regardless of their opinion whether agreeing or disagreeing as his parents taught him manners and to be respectful to others. He stated that during Lynwood's Month of Kindness Council Member Santana has made it known that it is our job to promote more kindness and indicated that at a future time he will be forthcoming with an appropriate statement.
Mayor Pro Tern Solache closed his oral comments stating the Council's priority is to remain focused on viable issues that impact the quality of life for Lynwood residents. He thanked his colleagues for continuing to support items that encompass the ever changing needs of community and noted that individually all five council members have a different voice. He praised Lynwood's civic leaders for their years of service noting that Ms. Santana has served over 20 years as a journalist and community advocate; Mr. Flores brings leadership spanning almost 32 years of public service; and that Mr. Casanova balances his business schedule with his civic duties. He stated that all the council members bring different qualities to the dais and acknowledged that he certainly is not perfect but he completely respects the public opinions voiced tonight and applauds the open dialog, but also for the record wanted to state that he has a regular job and noted that his work history began as a youth at the age of thirteen with his first employment involving a project impact in the City of Lynwood which entailed five (5) Saturdays in which he walked Bullis Road to Euclid and all the way down to Tweedy with a shovel or a broom to clear areas and was paid $50 for each of those Saturdays, he also stated that as a student worked at McDonalds and a couple of summers at Hub Cities, and thirteen years at a non-profit organization and now running a Chamber of Commerce and is proud of his day job and in fact benefits from two incomes with his partner. He continued in complementing all staff members, City Manager, City Attorney and department heads and noted that it is a pleasure to work with the expertise they bring to the City of Lynwood as we are #hashtag we are Lynwood.
Mayor Casanova agreed with his colleagues' comments and acknowledged that our work speaks for itself and noted that many in the community have expressed that we can keep our heads up high. He then expressed his excitement for the camping trip scheduled this weekend and the opportunity to interact with the youth from the community and was especially looking forward to being in the mountains and to enjoy hiking with our young residents as a part of the program. 9 He closed his comments in stating that results are what really matters and extended thanks to his colleagues' for the outstanding leadership that Lynwood has now and noted that others look up to this leadership. Mayor Casanova expressed appreciativeness for City Manager Hernandez presence alongside the council members participating in conferences and that he was looking forward to the next council meeting.
STAFF ORAL COMMENTS
City Manager Hernandez commented that he appreciates the management team at Lynwood and specified that this council is focused and displays dedication to the community. He made known his exceptional experience of over 20 years in municipality management and stated that success only thrives under strong leadership. He acknowledged that council members have to make tuff decisions that do not please everyone and commended the City Council's priority to remain focused on viable issues, whether it would be consideration of floating debt or to paying long term financial stability and stated that not all folks are going to be in agreement with the decisions made and asserted that they are entitled to their opinions. City Manager Hernandez expressed that Lynwood is a strong leader in the region which has been achieved through outstanding leadership at the council level.
He enthusiastically stated that he received notification that we have received 400 registrations for Lynwood's 5K Run and revealed that he is looking to create a team and requested Director Flores to provide an update of the event.
Director Mark Flores provided a detailed update of the City's activities scheduled for this weekend beginning with the 3-day and 2-night annual camping trip to Pali Mountain and noted it is completely sold out. He indicated that on Saturday the Dodgers' Foundation is sponsoring a player feast program hosting over 500 kids with a full day of activities planned for them including pictures with World Series Trophy and player autographs and free Dodger Dogs for the kids and their family members.
He stated that the 5K Run is scheduled for this Saturday and staff is looking forward to hosting 500 participants and noted that the highlight of the event will be at the end of the race raffle auction of the car that is parked in front of City Hall approximately at 10:30 am or 11:00 am. He explained that raffle will benefit scholarships and education programs for Lynwood students.
John Yoni provided comments regarding a fairly large special event request from Guatemala County Fair to use selected areas of Lynwood City Park for a public cultural festival proposed to be held on June 25 and 26, 2022. He indicated the event will feature cultural food and entertainment with event proceeds being used to pay for event and City costs. He indicated the item will be presented at Council June 7tI meeting. 10 ADJOURNMENT
